  • Celebrating Mercer Near the Moon River
Celebrating Mercer Near the Moon River By Lesley Francis Even the aftermath of hurricane Matthew can’t stop the resi- dents of Skidaway Island from a great party at the Plantation Club – especially when that party celebrates the life and music of John- ny Mercer. The second annual “birthday party” takes place on the evening of Friday, November 18, which would have been Mercer’s 107th birthday (he died in 1976). The evening – “Hooray for Hollywood” (after Mercer’s 1938 hit song) – will feature a glamorous, Hollywood ‘30s art deco theme, and attendees are encouraged to dress ele- gantly. Plans for the evening include dinner, dancing, en- tertainment, a 50/50 raffle and a member/cash bar. Kim Michael Polote, winner of the 2001 American Tradi- tions Vocal Competition (ATVC) Gold Medal, 2006 Gold Medal winner and ATVC Artistic Consultant Vale Rideout, and 2014 Gold Medal winner Mik- ki Sodergren will delight attendees by perform- ing some of Mercer’s classics. Mercer resonates with many of us who reside on Skidaway Island, so close to the Moon River which inspired him to write one of his most famous songs. Mercer wrote “Moon River” (mu- sic by Henry Mancini) in 1961 for the film “Breakfast at Tiffany’s,” winning his third Academy Award. Aside from this obvious connection, many of Mercer’s songs and lyrics 8 – VOL. 14 ISSUE 22 TheSkinnie www.theskinnie.com www.theskinnie.com 1422 Skinnie.indd 8 10/31/16 8:57 AM speak to the Southern way of life, its geography, nature, climate and man- bankruptcy, his father dedicated the rest of his life to paying off that debt, ners.

  • Saint Valentine's Toilet Ryan Byrnes
Saint Valentine's Toilet Ryan Byrnes For the First Annual Smooching Nooks of St. Louis Awards, I present the gold to Valentino's Restaurant. Mr. Dashing Danny Date, please mosey up to the stage for your medallion. Congratulations on asking me to dinner there, a truly original idea, untried by man, magnifipendous, really. Why yes, you can do a speech. What will you talk about? Valentino's - a spotlight in the city of 200 murders per annum? Valentino's - the only restaurant where you can find Catholic priests entombed in the basement? Valentino's - I forget the rest. Honorable mentions from the Smooching Nooks Guild go to that one cafe off Manchester where they let you play with cats while you drink bubble tea, the Build-a-Bear Workshop behind the Science Center, and the Missouri Botanical Gardens where you could bottle the atmosphere and spritz spritz it on your wrists like they do at the mall. These places would have earned medallions too, except for the fact that you're not allowed to smooch in them. Nooooo, nonono. I've visited these places so many times with Nana that it simply wouldn't do to let Mr. Dashing Danny Date take me there. Not that we'd do anything wrong. Take the Botanical Gardens, for example, which have a hundred of these little carved benches tucked away in the rose garden where we could've sat for five minutes and eaten gummy bears and maybe played Would You Rather, then he would ask would you rather kiss a frog or hold my hand and I would blush and say Oh You Cheeky and as our fingers inch closer like ten slow-dancing caterpillars a family of tourists roll by with strollers and fanny-packs.

  • Music Favorites List 2020
Music Favorites Playlist Updated January 2020 This is the list of songs that are most often requested of Anne Roos. To make it easy to find your favorites, songs are arranged by category and then numbered within each category. The music on this list is suitable for most events, including weddings, except for the last category. Search for the category of music you like, and then go from there to make your selections. If you cannot find what you’re looking for on this list, view Anne’s Complete Music Playlist, at HarpistAnneRoos.com. Listen to tracks from her CDs at Apple Music, Amazon.com, and CDBaby.com. Need help selecting your wedding music? Download ideas for How to Select Your Wedding Music on Anne’s website. Important note for weddings: Check with your celebrant (minister, rabbi, priest, etc.) before choosing your music. Some faiths, houses of worship or celebrants do not allow secular (non-religious) music or particular selections. In addition, some may not permit particular selections to be performed during the ceremony itself or outside the walls of a house of worship. In the following list, please note: “The Angelical Hymn”, which does not fit exactly into any one of the following categories, is the most requested wedding recessional selection, because it sounds like wedding bells. It will work with music from any category. KEY: CD—indicates selections featured on Anne Roos’ recordings “Haste to the Wedding”, “Mermaids & Mariners”, “A Light in the Forest”, “Blue Jeans & Velvet”, and “Through the Mist”. These tracks are available for download at online sources like Apple Music, Amazon.com, and CDBaby.com.
