Editor’s Notes

Welcome to the October edition of Fenny Drayton Parish News. Whereas late August/early September brought an autumnal feel, the rest of September was generally very pleasant. Now that we are in the Autumn, let’s see what the weather will bring!

We are pleased to be able to thank two volunteers who have come forward to help deliver the Parish News – Melissa is covering Church Lane, Drayton Lane and Drayton Close (she volunteered in time to deliver September’s issue) – and Jill will be taking Quaker Close and part of Old Forge Road. And thanks again to Averil and Sharon for their efforts over previous years.

We hope you have been enjoying the new look of the Parish News since March – as well as the change of layout, the change in printing process has allowed better reproduction and has allowed the inclusion of photos. This move to a commercial printer has increased our costs, which when the subscriptions are collected in January will be increased to £5. We hope you will agree that this still represents excellent value.

Fenny Drayton School – More Information! Last month we wrote how a small bungalow on Old Forge Road used to be the village school. More information has come to our attention regarding its sale. Early in 1960, enquiries were being made into whether the then redundant school could be used by the villagers. Over the next few years, proposals were put forward for the villagers to purchase it to develop it as a village hall. The building was finally sold at auction on 23 March 1966 – the proceeds being used for ‘church educational purposes within the Diocese’.

Church Matters from the Parishes of: Fenny Drayton, , Higham-on-the-Hill, Stoke Golding & Dadlington RECTOR: Rev’d Linda Blay (01455) 213988, [email protected]

While Linda is on Sabbatical, you may contact our Curate, Hilary Surridge, 01455 233064, [email protected]

October Musings Two of our six grandchildren have birthdays in October. One will be six and the other thirteen. When I was six my brother was born. Before that there had been just Mum and Dad and me – but then Richard arrived to change my family life. At thirteen I started going to a church youth club – Yardley Church 13 Club. (Teenagers hadn’t been invented back then,) The club had about 100 members. Church attendance was compulsory – so we swelled the evensong congregation nicely. This also changed my life. I found that I was unusual in that I enjoyed sermons. But through sermons or other triggers, five of my generation at Yardley Church were ordained. Do you have particular dates in October which act as entrances for thoughts and memories to come flooding into mind? Lord Scarbrough had his estate in one of my parishes – Maltby. It also had a pit! He wouldn’t have Harvest Festival until fairly late in October in order to wait for the potato harvest – ‘don’t count your spuds before they are dug up!’

5

What a multitude of birthdays, anniversaries (happy and sad), harvest festivals, saints days (Luke, Ignatius, Teresa of Avila - to name a few) arrive with October. And breathing through family relations, church friendships, worship surrounded by the saints and the digging up of spuds is God’s Spirit. There is a sense of ‘holding together’ and inspiration which is Spirit-filled. Led by God, October takes us from St.Michael and All Angels at the end of September right up to All Saints at the beginning of November. May you travel happily with Him. Fenn Lanes Men’s Group Geoff Grewcock got the new season off to an excellent start with a talk about his work with the Nuneaton & Warwickshire Wildlife Sanctuary. What with bringing an 8 foot boa constrictor, a beautiful barn owl, and an enormous eagle owl, detailing all the wide variety of birds and animals that are brought into the sanctuary. Over the last 13 years, 34500 animals have been rescued through the sanctuary – many native species are able to be released back to the wild, but generally those born in captivity cannot, likewise non-native species. These are carefully rehomed, those remaining at the sanctuary being relatively small in number. We heard that Geoff and his volunteers rescue animals across Warwickshire and beyond – often being called out by police forces and Network Rail. Many of the rescues are due to cruelty or abandonment, although there are also the sad occurrences of owners dying, this necessitating the collection of their animals. Geoff’s talk was at times sobering to hear the way animals are treated, but at other times entertaining as he regaled us with tales about strange rescue requests and parrots that have degrees in profanity!

For our next meeting Nuneaton movie makers will take the theme “Village Scenes.” October 21st, Witherley Parish Rooms Need a lift? Call Michael Tait on 713270

‘Fly In’ at Stoke Golding Airfield

Ninth of August saw the annual classic meeting of cars and planes at Stoke Golding International Airport. A remarkable attendance of some forty small aircraft attended as well as various motor vehicles and motorcycles. Saturday was a gorgeous day of bright sunshine and accordingly the grass before the marquee was filled with admirers enjoying the catering and the sight of aerobatic displays and the to-and-fro of the innumerable private aircraft, not to mention gyro- copters and powered hang- gliders. Sadly the forecast for the following day was one of unremitting storms – and so it turned out – so the second day of the meeting had to be abandoned; all the aircraft, bar only one or two, having sensibly departed by the Saturday evening sunset. Despite being curtailed to just the one day, the event still raised £150 in aid of the Air Ambulance, with more pledged from DVD sales at Christmas Your Aeronautical Correspondent Windsock

Annual Benefice Bus Trip This year the coach was bursting at the seams for a trip to Cambridge! A lovely sunny day saw us enjoying the punts on the river, the Kings College Chapel, the beautiful architecture, the shops and, of course, the fine wining and dining! Many thanks to everyone who supported the trip, we look forward to seeing you again next year! A5 Roadworks

The roadworks on the A5 continue, with work now underway on the A444/A5 junction; creating an elongated island/roundabout:

Last month we reported possible restrictions on Drayton Lane, which materialised as a complete closure of the A5/Drayton Lane junction due to Leicestershire Highways concern over traffic build up and U-turning creating a hazard there. This created heated debate, both within the village and beyond, with compliments about making the village quieter, and complaints about difficult journeys out of (and through) the village.

By the time you read this, we should be nearing the end of the closure of the Nuneaton side of the A444, with a similar complete closure of the Redgate side of the A444 scheduled to start ‘at the end of October’. These closures are to allow the complete excavation and reconstruction of the road at the junctions. At the time of writing, the exact details of the Redgate-side closure and the necessary diversions were still being discussed.

Any concerns over this can perhaps be directed via our Parish Councillors.

To receive email newsletters with the latest updates from thse managing the work – please contact [email protected] or [email protected]

Where are we in the Universe? The picture below shows our galaxy, the Milky Way. About 28000 light years from the centre, a small dot represents the whole of our solar system (the Sun, Earth and neighbouring planets like Mars & Saturn). To give a sense of scale to that 28000 light year distance – we are about 8 light MINUTES from the sun! Gordon Coultrop

Premium Rate Phone Calls

Many home and mobile phone contracts include all calls to ordinary phone numbers, but might charge extra for ‘non georgraphic’ numbers (like 0845, 0844, 0870 etc numbers). Often there is an alternative number that you won’t get charged extra for using – you can look these up at www.saynoto0870.com. For example, for Talktalk’s customer services, instead of dialing 0870 444 1820 you can dial 020 3441 5550.

Witherley Parish Council – Fenny Drayton Ward Fenny Drayton Parish Councillors – to contact with News, Views & Issues:

Alistair Brittain [email protected] 712172 Maureen Cook [email protected] c/o Clerk Ann Wright [email protected] 720966 Clerk: Anji Forsyth [email protected] 880548

Extracts from the minutes of the Parish Council Meeting, September 11th

(Full Minutes are available at http://witherley.leicestershireparishcouncils.org/minutes-archive.html)

A794: PUBLIC QUESTION TIME: Mr Williams questioned the Council about the increased traffic using the village as a rat run to avoid the A5 road works. The Chairman advised him that there would be a thorough discussion of the matter later in the agenda which would put him in the picture as to what had happened so far, and any next steps to be taken. A796: CRIME STATISTICS for August. Fenny Drayton: Old Forge Rd – theft from motor vehicle, number plates stolen, no suspects. A797: CLERK UPDATE: Fenny Drayton: Play equipment preserved. Swings painted. Replacement seat rounds to be preserved and re-positioned. Councillors have greased the swings. Replacement shackles in hand. Rookery Close footpath sign in poor condition. Letter to LCC for assistance. Reply from LCC puts the onus on this Council. Cllr Cook will re-paint the letters on the sign. A798: FENNY DRAYTON TRAFFIC:  County Cllr Ould opened the discussion by thanking Cllr Alexander for the continuing updates on the situation as the PC attempted to change the diversion arrangements to reduce the impact on Fenny Drayton.  Cllr Ould has approached David Tredinnick MP to help the County Council alter the current diversions.  Discussions of many examples of near misses in the village and on the A5 and were startling and an indicator of the dire situation.

15

 Cllr Alexander described the communication process so far and he agreed to attend the Highways Forum on 19th Sept on behalf of the Parish Council to discuss the issue.  Chairman informed the Council that, following an inspection by LCC Highways, a full closure of Drayton Lane at the A5 junction was the only option to stop its use as a “rat run”.  It was agreed that a letter should be sent to David Tredinnick MP to request support in trying to obtain a change to the current situation. Motion carried. We support the efforts of LCC to institute an emergency closure of Drayton Lane at its junction with A5. A799: COUNTY COUNCILLOR UPDATE:  Consultation Strategy Document from LCC – Everyone should respond to indicate their preferences where the cuts in budgets should be made.  HBBC Housing Strategy – indicates there should be 450 homes per year built in the Borough, however they are already 650 short. The Borough is in a vulnerable position for housing. A800: BOROUGH COUNCILLOR UPDATE:  This Parish Council should not budget on receiving any further New Homes Bonus or other such payments from HBBC as the Council is short in its own budget.  Planning – the application to build 2 houses on the land adjacent to 20 Church Lane was rejected at national appeal.  Parish Initiative Fund is available for local groups to bid for a share of £10k. A801: UPDATES FROM VILLAGES: Fenny Drayton: Dogs on Leads sign has been vandalised – to be reported to police.  There have been instances of children being startled by dogs not on leads allowed to interfere with children’s play.  There have been 4 positive responses from readers of the Parish Magazine supporting the purchase of adult fitness equipment to be installed in the Fenny Drayton play area. Clerk to obtain costs. Councillors to discuss details at a future meeting.

16

 Tree in playing field behind 42 Fox’s Covert appears to be dying. Tree to be cut back.  While the diverted traffic is too chaotic to log, there is little point in conducting a Speed Watch scheme. It will be re-visited after the road works. A802: GEORGE FOX MEMORIAL – Plaque commemorating George Fox that was located by the oak trees has been missing for some time. Councillors will bring a proposal back to the Council as to what they feel should be done. A803: GRASS CUTTING LISTS: Each village has submitted its list of grassed areas which they would like to have cut, and how frequently. Clerk to put this work out to tender and will report back to Council in approx. 2 months. A804: CONTRACTING CONTRACTORS: In order to save time as jobs are identified it was proposed that the Council should contract with a key number of trades men to undertake work on behalf of the Council. This work would be agreed by the Council as per the financial regulations, but save the Clerk obtaining 3 quotes for work each time. It was proposed that the Clerk put out to tender groundsman/handyman work to local tradesmen; proposed by Cllr Alexander, seconded by Chairman, carried. A806: PLANNING Applications from the following properties were discussed;  14/00738 11 Old Forge Rd, Fenny Drayton – no objections.

A807: CORRESPONDENCE:  Telephone conversation with Mr and Mrs Maunder regarding the moving of earth by farmer Mr Simpson’s (Drayton Lane) on the archaeological roman site.  Email from Mrs Pat Gibbs thanking Councillors who greased the Fenny Drayton swings.

Next meeting: October 9th, 7:30pm - Parish Rooms, Witherley
