Editor’s Bit

Welcome again to Fenny Drayton Parish News. After an exhaustive recruitment process, we have appointed a motoring correspondent, known only as ‘Layshaft’. You can read his/her first contribution in this issue.

Other contributors are still welcome. If you are involved in (or know of) a local event, have something interesting to share with the village please send it to me. This could be a one off piece, or even better if you would like to contribute a series of articles (any keen gardeners, cooks, travellers out there?) Especially welcome, would be anyone wanting to join the committee, to help with any aspect of this publication.

Church Matters from the Parishes of: Fenny Drayton, , Higham-on-the-Hill, & Dadlington

RECTOR: Rev’d Linda Blay (01455) 213988, [email protected]

‘War tears lives apart. Love can help piece them back together.’ Christian Aid Week 11-17 May 2014 For a growing number of people across the world, the horror of war is a part of daily life. Christian Aid Week this year is focussing on working to bring peace to communities decimated by conflict. Lives are torn apart by war. People are driven in terror from their homes, turning whole families – entire communities – into refugees, wrenched from the familiar and the things they hold most dear. The threat of violence often gives way to the grinding life of poverty, and the feeling that pervades is a relentless and crippling sense of fear: Fear for lives. Fear for loved ones. Fear for the future. Right now, fuelled by the devastating violence in both Syria and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the numbers of people driven from their homes by war is on the rise. It stands at 42 million people – an appalling statistic. South Sudan has been and remains devastated by war. Many communities are suffering greatly from a lack of access to basic healthcare, education, and, at times, food to eat. Since December 2013 over 700,000 people have been displaced inside South Sudan, forced from their homes amid escalating violence. Food and essential items are needed there. We can make a real difference to people’s lives by donating during Christian Aid Week (11–17 May 2014). With our help, many more people can look forward to a future free from poverty.

£15 could provide blankets for refugee children to protect them from bitter night-time temperatures. £40 could provide enough good quality and nutritious food for two refugee children for a month.

5

£150 could help provide specialist emotional support for a child deeply traumatised by the horror of war that they’ve witnessed or experienced. Through our faith, our prayers and our generosity this Christian Aid Week, we can stand alongside some of the poorest people, in and around the world. Thank you for being a part of it. Linda

Sunday, May 11th is Rogation Sunday in the Fenn Lanes Benefice

Everyone is welcome to Sunday worship at Lodge Farm, Atterton, 11am.

Do bring wellies or walking boots, if the weather is fit we will walk the fields to see the lambs and the crops – and then enjoy a ‘Bring & Share’ Lunch back in the barn.

Rogation means an asking of God – for blessing on the crops and land for the year ahead – the tradition began with the Romans, but in the 5th century a Christian Bishop ordered that prayers should be said in ruined fields after a period of earthquake, storm and epidemic – and so it became a Christian tradition arriving in in the 8th century . On rogationtide a little party would set out to trace the boundaries of the parish – led by the priest & the cross, at certain points along the route, the party halted and a litany or ‘rogation’ would be said imploring God to send seasonable wealth to the parish. At one point beer and cheese would be waiting!

If you need further details please ring Charles or Janet Harding on 01827 717999

In Loving Memory of Keith Frederick Gardner

5th May 1944 - 12th March 2014.

My beloved husband Keith of 44 years will be sadly missed by Maureen, Sally & Jamie & families. He trained as a Chartered Civil Engineer with Coventry City Council & later for Severn Trent Water. We have lived in the village since our marriage in 1970 & have been involved in many village activities, including the Amenities Committee - a founder member of the Parish News together with Martin Williams & others - member of Parish Council - School Governor (and Chairman of Governors) at Witherley School - Secretary of Witherley UFC for 20-30 years - arranged "the Lane Settings" - open gardens with teas at Cooke's bungalow, Drayton Lane & many other village activities.

Thank you for cards & well wishes from many old friends in the village.

Maureen Gardner & family

Friday With Friends

Another great evening on the 4th April. This truly is an 'everyone welcome' event, not geared to specific age groups; If you come alone, there will be someone from the village to catch up with: if you have children, there are generally others there for them to play with - you are welcome to join us any time between 7 and 10pm and stay as long, or as briefly as you wish. Bring whatever you wish to drink and enjoy the company. We usually meet the first Friday in the month but, to avoid the Bank Holiday weekend, we will be meeting on the second Friday in May. Forthcoming dates: 9th May 6th June, 4th July

The Fenns Folk In March the group heard the history and practice of our remaining local master bakers, Gaytons of Grendon – and enjoyed free samples at the end of Mrs Gayton’s talk. We heard of long hours, commitment to detail, ill health caused by working conditions, of family finding ways of working together, of skills passed from one generation to another – and of a business that has bucked the trend and survived in its original site. The next Fenns Folk meeting will be on Thursday 29th May, at 7.30pm in Fenny Drayton Church

The speaker will be Dave Norris

who will present a talk on his connections with charity work in India – a mission that Dave has supported for many years

There will a glass of wine or a cuppa, and as always, everyone is welcome. So please come along if you can for what promises to be an interesting talk with the chance for a natter too.

Fenn Lanes Men’s Group

For our March meeting, Mr Mick Turner talked about his role as a Prison Visitor – which is to provide independent oversight of the treatment of prisoners, to ensure that they are not mistreated. Mick also provided some insights into prison life – and some sobering statistics of those who are locked up: including the high proportions with drug and/or mental health problems and the ageing of the prison population. Our next speaker will be Jim Norden on the subjest of trumpets and other brass instruments. There may be some similarity with his talk Fenn’s Folk talk, but no doubt still an enjoyable evening on : May 20th, 7:30pm, Witherley Parish Rooms Need a lift? Call Michael Tate on 713270

THANK YOU FOR COMING TO THE EASTER FAMILY TEA PARTY

Thank you to everyone who came to the Easter Family Tea Party and egg hunt. It was lovely to see all of you and wonderful to have so many children hunting for eggs. The Easter gardens on a plate were brilliant and Will Brittain won the prize. Well done to all those who made gardens and congratulations Will!

Thank you to everyone who made cakes, gave donations and helped on the day, without you we could not have these events. The main purpose of the event was to have fun but we were lucky enough to raise £120 for church funds at the same time.

ROCKING ALL OVER THE WORLD

We would like to thank Dave Norris and his group, ‘Still Thirsty’, again for the amazing evening of music on 14th March this year. As John Frisby wrote in his article in the April Magazine it was an amazing evening, which will never be forgotten by all who came. The group played voluntarily and the event raised £300.80 which will be used to help pay for the upkeep of the church.

Matters of Record

Your new, probably only temporary, motoring correspondent is going to start with what they call in ‘journalese’ a scoop. A scoop that in 1964 was on the front page of every English (probably not the Scotsman, so on this occasion – not British) newspaper from the Times to the Daily Star.

Those of you, or should it be us, in their late sixties, early seventies or more, may recall the furore of a racing car being prepared for the Le Mans 24-hour race in June being recorded testing on the new M1 motorway at a speed of 185mph. It is NOT true that this was the cause for the limit of 70mph on British motorways being imposed by Barbara Castle three years later, but the press had a further ‘field day’ in seeking to blame this on the aforementioned event.

Anyway, just to name-drop, in very poor taste I know, I had the very great honour to meet the driver on Sunday afternoon, 9th March, who was the cause of this furore fifty years earlier.

Not quite as well known perhaps as Sir Stirling Moss or Sir Jack Brabham, Jim Clark et al, Mr Jack Sears was nevertheless one of the most successful British drivers in everything other than Grand Prix cars.

In May 1964 ‘the M1 incident’ involved a Cobra Daytona Coupé built by AC Cars (famed for their more pedestrian vehicles for the elderly & disabled – remember those blue three wheelers?). Sadly the car did not complete the 24-hour race due to a tyre exploding at high speed putting Jack Sears’ co- driver, Peter Bolton, in hospital overnight suffering from concussion.

12

It was coincidence that my first visit to Le Mans was in 1964, but my sole recollection, whilst trying to stay awake for the full 24 hours, was of a Triumph Spitfire crashing into the safety barrier head on by missing both the Dunlop curve and the escape road provided to avoid just such an occurance! He also probably ‘nodded off’. From the mid-1950’s to the mid- 1960’s Jack sears raced all over the world in all the best makes of cars – Jaguar, Aston Martin, Ferrari, Lister, Austin-Healey and Ford. Most famed for racing a seven-litre Ford Galaxie, he was also as successful, well almost, as Jim Clark in the Lotus Cortinas of the day. Indeed Sears and Clark were teamed up by Colin Chapman to beat the BMW’s at Sebring in 1965. Driving the works Lotus Cortinas, Sears followed Clark for a one-two victory precisely as ordered! Always affable, Mr Searswas enthusiastic in showing off his original Ford Galaxie, winning its first three races at Silverstone, Aintree and Crystal Palace respectively in 1963; and many others in 1964, after which the Lotus Cortina became pre- eminent. Other family motors were displayed before the invitation to enjoy cocktails with his wife Diana amid a host of paintings and trophies illustrative of his successful career. A very great honour indeed to behold.

Witherley Parish Council – Fenny Drayton Ward

Fenny Drayton Parish Councillors – to contact with News, Views & Issues:

Robert Alexander [email protected] 768649 Alistair Brittain [email protected] 712172 Maureen Cook [email protected] c/o Clerk Ann Wright [email protected] 720966 Clerk: Anji Forsyth [email protected] 880548

Extracts from Minutes of the Parish Meeting held on Thursday 13th March

(Full Minutes are available at http://witherley.leicestershireparishcouncils.org/minutes-archive.html)

A712: COUNTY COUNCILLOR REPORT: Council tax increase is confirmed as 0% for the County Council element. Originally it was to be set as 1.5%, but the Government offered an increase of 1% on the base budget. Due to an overall under-spend there was sufficient left over to cover the outstanding 0.5%. Library consultation – and many small libraries are currently the subject of consultation regarding their future. It may face closure unless volunteers can be found to run it. School Transport Catchment Areas: No one from within the Witherley Parish has contacted Cllr Ould regarding the consultation (which closed on Wednesday 12th March) concerning the proposed “nearest school” policy. Snibston Discovery Museum – The museum costs over £750,000 pa in subsidies, and there are capital costs for building maintenance. The existing museum is to close and a mining museum opened.

Fenny Drayton Playing Field – quote from contractor has been amended to include all wooden play equipment uprights, picnic benches and the changing of the swing bushes to £216. This was agreed by all as a good price and the work should go ahead.

Playing Field signage – to be attached by Cllrs Woods and Brittain.

A714 UPDATES FROM VILLAGES:

14

 Fly tipping on the green lane, Fenn Lanes and A444 has drastically increased. Everyone can help to catch the perpetrators by being vigilant and noting the registration number, and reporting to 101. FENNY DRAYTON: Fence at Old Rectory is in danger of falling into the road again. Clerk to report to Highways.  Highways need to replace the give way sign on A444 at Fenn Lane junction.  Verges being churned by lorries using the village as a cut through.  Speeding is again a major problem.  Highways have done maintenance on the footpaths, the new stiles were authorised by the land owners.  Phonebox light is faulty. Clerk to report to BT. WITHERLEY:  Defibrillator – training for the use of will be at Witherley Parish Rooms on 1st May at 7 p.m. Anyone wishing to register for training should contact Cllr Conway.

A715: PLANNING – Barwell SUE update from Cllr Cook – there is ongoing action from the cross parish action group. There is hard evidence from vehicle activated sign equipment that the data presented by the developers is incorrect, and underestimates the amount of current and future traffic across the area by almost 40%. The reported rainfall catchment from the area will affect Witherley down- stream.

A717: SITE ALLOCATIONS CONSULTATION DOCUMENT: The Council responded to the consultation on 17th February 2014 advising the page 114 ref FEN03 was incorrect under policy DM08; as it had incorrectly identified the garden of Rookery Farm as open park land. There were no other amendments to the document. Cllr Conway discussed the potential of the document to assist the Council when considering future planning applications.

WANTED! Become a VOLUNTEER litter picker Your Community Needs You!

 Do you hate seeing litter around? Do you get out and about on a regular basis?  Could you spare a bit of your time when it suits you?  Do you love where you live and want to help to improve your local area? If the answer is ‘yes’ to these questions then why not become a volunteer litter picker? We’ll supply you with all the equipment you need to do a litter pick, such as a litter picker, gloves, hi-vis vest and bags. We’ll also arrange for rubbish to be collected so you don’t have to worry about using your own wheeled bin. The HBBC Clean Neighbourhood operatives work very hard and do a great job, but we simply do not have the manpower or resources to deep clean every single area of the borough every day. So in order to raise the standard of cleanliness in our communities even further we would love to give you the opportunity to help. Finally, if you are happy for us to do so we would promise to recognise all our volunteers throughout the year in a variety of ways in order to thank you for your help and contribution. So if this is something you are interested in doing, then please contact us using the details below and provide us with your name, address and contact details as well as the area you would be happy to collect litter from. We will then provide you with your equipment and any further information you feel you need.
