Nevertheless, he made also important contributions in different areas of chemistry and chemical engineering. Pursuits of race and religious order forced him and his family to leave his native Austria and emigrate to the United States. His professional career included both academic and industrial research achievements. Keywords: Physical chemistry; thermodynamics of solutions; Raman spectroscopy. INTRODUCTION Practically every day students and professionals of all disciplines in science and engineering use theories, equations, and rules, baptized with the names of those scientists who derived them. A quick survey among a representative sample of such students and professionals very surely would reveal that, with few exceptions, not many would have at least a minimum knowledge about the persons who are responsible for these scientific contributions. The Redlich-Kwong equation of state has been used for several generations of chemists and chemical engineers for the calculation of volumetric and ther- modynamic properties of pure substances and their mixtures, being preferred nowadays because of its simplicity and acceptable degree of Figure 1. August 30, 2010 Jacob Bigeleisen, Isotope Chemist on Manhattan Project, Dies at 91 By KENNETH CHANG Jacob Bigeleisen, a chemist who worked on the development of the atomic bomb as part of the Manhattan Project and helped discover new ways of analyzing chemical reactions, died Aug. 7 in Arlington, Va. He was 91. The cause was pulmonary disease, his son Ira said. Dr. Bigeleisen (pronounced BEEG-a-lie-zen) was a founder of the field called isotope chemistry. Isotopes are versions of an element that have almost the same chemical properties but different atomic weights. Dr. Bigeleisen’s initial foray into the field was one of wartime need. In 1943, he began working at Columbia University as part of the Manhattan Project, seeking to develop a chemical process to separate uranium-235, the radioactive isotope needed to make an atomic bomb, from the more bountiful isotope uranium-238. The approach Dr. Bigeleisen tried, using photochemistry, did not prove practical for producing large quantities of uranium-235 needed for the bombs. Ultimately, gaseous diffusion was used. But the research, by Dr. Bigeleisen and Maria Goeppert-Mayer, who would later win a Nobel Prize in Physics, resulted in a simple theory for calculating the behavior of isotopes in gaseous reactions, which helped open the new field of isotope chemistry. -

Please respond to mapollard To All Faculty and Staff: Dr. Jacob Bigeleisen, 91, Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Chemistry, State University of New York at Stony Brook, died of pulmonary disease on August 7, 2010. Bigeleisen was born in Paterson, NJ. He received his undergraduate degree from New York University (AB 1939). After graduate studies at Washington State University (MS 1941), where he worked with Otto Redlich, he went to University of California, Berkeley (PhD 1943), where he was one of the last students of G. N. Lewis. He joined the Manhattan Project at Columbia University in 1943. Bigeleisen held postdoctoral fellowships at Ohio State University (1945-6) and the University of Chicago (1946-8), before joining the Chemistry Department at Brookhaven National Laboratory (1948-68). He then moved to the University of Rochester (1968-78, Chairman 1970-75, Tracey Harris Professor 1973-8), and finally The State University of New York at Stony Brook (Vice President Research and Dean of Graduate Studies 1978-80, Leading Professor of Chemistry 1978-89, and Distinguished Professor Emeritus 1989-2010). At various times, Bigeleisen served as Associate Editor of the Journal of Physical Chemistry, and the Journal of Chemical Physics. He was active in the division of Physical Chemistry ACS, the division of Chemical Physics APS, and the Gordon Conferences where he organized the first conference on isotope chemistry (1958) and was Trustee (1968-71) and Chairman of the Board (1970-1). -

AROLD UREY WAS A SCIENTIST whose interests, accomplish- Hments, and influence spanned the disciplines of chem- istry, astronomy, astrophysics, geology, geophysics, and biol- ogy. Although he was meticulous in his attention to detail, his sights were always on broad questions at the forefront of knowledge. His unusual powers of concentration and capacity for hard work accounted for much of his success in exploring and opening up major new fields of research, including his discovery of deuterium and work on isotope chemistry, isotope separation, isotope geology, and cosmo- chemistry. Urey’s approach to a new area began with his becoming thoroughly familiar with what was known about the subject of his curiosity and then the formulation of a theory to explain a large amount of uncorrelated material, which was then followed by carefully planned experiments. The latter frequently involved the design of new experi- mental equipment beyond the state of the art. -
