    ® 2019-2020 Season Overview JULY 2020 Report Summary The following is a report on the gender distribution of choreographers whose works were presented in the 2019-2020 seasons of the fifty largest ballet companies in the United States. Dance Data Project® separates metrics into subsections based on program, length of works (full-length, mixed bill), stage (main stage, non-main stage), company type (main company, second company), and premiere (non-premiere, world premiere). The final section of the report compares gender distributions from the 2018- 2019 Season Overview to the present findings. Sources, limitations, and company are detailed at the end of the report. Introduction The report contains three sections. Section I details the total distribution of male and female choreographic works for the 2019-2020 (or equivalent) season. It also discusses gender distribution within programs, defined as productions made up of full-length or mixed bill works, and within stage and company types. Section II examines the distribution of male and female-choreographed world premieres for the 2019-2020 season, as well as main stage and non-main stage world premieres.     PRESS RELEASE Send date Transitions Dance Company: Triple Bill Trinity Laban’s leading student training company showcases dancers in three brand new works from established choreographers Choreographed by Dog Kennel Hill Project, Theo Clinkard and Ederson Rodrigues Xavier UK Tour 19 February – 27 May “Performances by this enterprising company are always an eye-opener.” (Guardian Guide) Transitions Dance Company’s triple bill showcases the next generation of contemporary dance performers from Trinity Laban with twelve MA students performing three brand new pieces from choreographers Dog Kennel Hill Project, Theo Clinkard and Ederson Rodrigues Xavier. Since it was founded in 1982 by original Martha Graham Dance Company member Bonnie Bird, this pioneering company has aimed to bridge the gap between training and a professional performance career for graduate dancers. Transitions Dance Company aims to allow company members to gain practical experience of life in a touring dance company whilst simultaneously completing their MA Dance Performance. Past alumni of the company include distinguished artists such as Sir Matthew Bourne (New Adventures), Luca Silvestrini (Luca Silvestrini’s Protein), and Emma Gladstone (Artistic Director and Chief Executive of Dance Umbrella). Fieldwork from performance and research collective Dog Kennel Hill Project explores how, as a newly formed company, the dancers locate themselves now and in relation to their past. Through a deconstructed series of arrivals and departures and a language of stumbles, false starts, surges and going round in circles, Fieldwork asks “when do we truly arrive anywhere?” my dance, your touch draws upon research that outlines how physical touch affects our behavioural, cultural, emotional and biological development.

Created specially for The Royal Ballet in 2013, this stunning production tells the story of the bumbling knight Don Quixote and his ever-faithful squire Sancho Panza, and their efforts to help the young lovers Kitri and Basilio. This revival features exciting debuts from Lauren Cuthbertson, Yasmine Naghdi and Mayara Magri as Kitri and Matthew Ball, Alexander Campbell and Marcelino Sambé as Basilio. Don Quixote For all Royal Opera House press releases visit www.roh.org.uk/for/press-and-media includes a number of spectacular solos and pas de deux as well as outlandish comedy and romance as the dashing Basilio steals the heart of the beautiful Kitri. Don Quixote will be live streamed to cinemas on Tuesday 19 February as part of the ROH Live Cinema Season. Carlos Acosta previously danced the role of Basilio in many productions of Don Quixote. He was invited by Kevin O’Hare Director of The Royal Ballet, to re-stage this much-loved classic in 2013. Acosta’s vibrant production evokes sunny Spain with designs by Tim Hatley who has also created productions for the National Theatre and for musicals including Dreamgirls, The Bodyguard and Shrek. Acosta’s choreography draws on Marius Petipa’s 1869 production of this classic ballet and is set to an exuberant score by Ludwig Minkus arranged and orchestrated by Martin Yates.

Presented on location in Covent Garden at the iconic Royal Opera House, Katie weaves the history of ballet through carefully curated excerpts from the past decade of performances and goes behind the scenes to see what it takes to be a dancer in the company of The Royal Ballet as they prepare to take to the stage. From the great classics of The Sleeping Beauty and The Nutcracker to the exciting frontiers of contemporary dance, Katie takes us on a romp through the repertory, showcasing the diversity of the UK’s biggest ballet company. With stunning solos, passionate pas de deux and jaw-dropping numbers for the corps de ballet, it is a chance to see your favourite dancers up close, including Carlos Acosta, Marianela Nuñez, Natalia Osipova and Steven McRae, alongside rising stars like Francesca Hayward and Matthew Ball, who will introduce their favourite ballets and share stories of their life on the stage. The ballets featured include the classics Giselle, La Bayadère, Swan Lake, The Sleeping Beauty and The Nutcracker while the 20th-century heritage of the Royal Ballet is explored in works by Frederick Ashton and Kenneth MacMillan. Principal dancer with American Ballet Theater, David Hallberg makes his debut in this production as Romeo opposite Natalia Osipova as Juliet. Production relayed live to cinemas and on Tuesday 11 June 2019. This Spring, The Royal Ballet revives Kenneth MacMillan’s 20th-century dramatic masterpiece, Romeo and Juliet. During the course of this revival, Akane Takada, Beatriz Stix-Brunell and Anna Rose O’Sullivan debut as Juliet. Also performing the role during this run are Principal dancers Francesca Hayward, Sarah Lamb and Marianela Nuñez.

    Founders Stella Abrera is the Artistic Director of Kaatsbaan and a Principal Dancer with American Ballet Gregory Cary Kevin McKenzie Theatre. Ms. Abrera is from South Pasadena, California, and began her studies with Philip and Bentley Roton Martine van Hamel Charles Fuller and Cynthia Young at Le Studio in Pasadena. She continued her studies with Lorna Executive Director Diamond and Patricia Hoffman at the West Coast Ballet Theatre in San Diego. She also spent three Sonja Kostich Artistic Director years studying the Royal Academy of Dancing method with Joan and Monica Halliday at the Stella Abrera Halliday Dance Centre in Sydney, Australia. Board of Trustees Kevin McKenzie, Chair Stella Abrera Ms. Abrera joined American Ballet Theatre as a member of the corps de ballet in 1996, was Christine Augustine Gregory Cary appointed a Soloist in 2001, and Principal Dancer in August 2015.     A Message from Josefa Villanueva-Reyes, Artistic Director and Founder: I welcome you with great joy and happiness to celebrate the Santa Clara Ballet’s 45th Anniversary of the Nutcracker Ballet. The Santa Clara Ballet continues the legacy left to us by our late Director and choreographer, Benjamin Reyes, by sharing this favorite family Christmas Ballet with our community, our student and professional dancers and our loyal supporters. The Company’s roots started right here in Santa Clara, and has continued despite the usual problems of obtaining funding and support. We can continue because of all of you who are present in our performances, and through your generous donations and volunteer work. The Company continues its work in spreading the awareness and the love of dance to warm families and contribute to the quality of life of the community. For this Sunday’s performance of our 45th Annual Nutcracker, the stage will be graced by our Alumni who serve as a testament to the success of the company’s influence to the community and the world beyond. Thank you for your presence today and please continue to join us on our journey. Josefa Reyes JOSEFA VILLANUEVA-REYES started her training in the Philippines with Roberta and Ricardo Cassell (a student of Vincenzo Celli). She was formerly a member of the San Francisco Ballet Company and the San Francisco Opera Ballet. Previous to that, she performed as a principal dancer with the San Francisco Ballet Celeste for four years. Her performing experience included multiple lead roles from the classical repertory. Villanueva-Reyes taught at the San Francisco Conservatory of Ballet and Theatre Arts as well as San Jose City College.
