From 14 – 17 March at the Esplanade Theatre, SDT will mesmerise audiences with this charming and sentimental tale of adventure, mistaken identity and a beautiful life-sized doll. A new staging by Artistic Director Janek Schergen, featuring original choreography by Arthur Saint-Leon, Coppélia is set to a ballet libretto by Charles Nuittier, with music by Léo Delibes. Based on a story by E.T.A. Hoffman, this three-act ballet tells the light-hearted story of the mysterious Dr Coppélius who owns a beautiful life-sized puppet, Coppélia. A village youth named Franz, betrothed to the beautiful Swanilda becomes infatuated with Coppélia, not knowing that she just a doll. The magic and fun begins when Coppélia springs to life! Coppélia is one of the most performed and favourite full-length classical ballets from SDT’s repertoire. This colourful ballet was first performed by SDT in 1995 with staging by Colin Peasley of The Australian Ballet. Following this, the production was revived again in 1997, 2001 and 2007. This year, Artistic Director Janek Schergen will be bringing this ballet back to life with a new staging. -

Ham Concert Hall Performing Arts Center University of Nevada, Las Vegas PROGRAM NOTES The Concerto in F minor Composed 1899 Instrumentation solo trumpet, flute, oboe, two clarinets, bassoon, four horns, trumpet, three trombones, timpani, and strings. Oskar Bohme was a trumpet player and composer who began his career in Germany during the late 1800’s. After playing in small orchestras around Germany he moved to St. Petersburg to become a cornetist for the Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra. Bohme composed and published is Trumpet Concerto in E Minor in 1899 while living in St. Petersburg. History caught up with Oskar Bohme in 1934 when he was exiled to Orenburg during Stalin’s Great Terror. It is known that Bohme taught at a music school in the Ural Mountain region for a time, however, the exact time and circumstances of Bohme’s death are unknown. Bohme’s Concerto in F Minor is distinguished because it is the only known concerto written for trumpet during the Romantic period. The concerto was originally written in the key of E minor and played on an A trumpet. -

AN ANALYSIS OF “SEVEN LAST WORDS FROM THE CROSS” (1993) BY JAMES MACMILLAN BY HERNHO PARK DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Musical Arts in Music with a concentration in Choral Music in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2015 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Professor Barrington Coleman, Chair Professor Carlos Carrillo, Director of Research Professor Michael Silvers Professor Fred Stoltzfus ABSTRACT James MacMillan is one of the most well-known and successful living composers as well as an internationally active conductor. His musical language is influenced by his Scottish heritage, the Catholic faith, and traditional Celtic folk music, blended with Scandinavian and European composers including Olivier Messiaen (1908-1992), Alfred Schnittke (1943-1998), and Igor Stravinsky (1882-1971). His cantata for choir and strings Seven Last Words from the Cross, was commissioned by BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation) television, composed in 1993, and premiered in 1994 by Cappella Nova and the BT (British Telecom) Scottish Ensemble. While this piece is widely admired as one of his best achievements by choral conductors and choirs, it is rarely performed, perhaps due to its high level of difficulty for both the string players and singers. The purpose of this dissertation is to present an analysis of the Seven Last Words from the Cross by James MacMillan aimed to benefit choral conductors rather than audiences. Very little has been written about MacMillan's choral works. My hope is to establish a foundation on which future scholars may expand and explore other choral works by MacMillan. -

Introduction to Focus 2020 by Joel Sachs The seed for this year’s Focus Festival was planted in December 2018 at a Juilliard doctoral recital by the Chilean violist Sergio Muñoz Leiva. I was especially struck by the sonata of Rebecca Clarke, an Anglo-American composer of the early 20th century who has been known largely by that one piece, now a staple of the viola repertory. Thinking about the challenges she faced in establishing her credibility as a professional composer, my mind went to a group of women in that period, roughly 1885 to 1930, who struggled to be accepted as professional composers rather than as professional performers writing as a secondary activity or as amateur composers. -

Bolender spent the final third of his 70-year career in Kansas City, as Artistic Director of the Kansas City Ballet 1981-1995 (Missouri State Ballet 1986- 2000) and Director Emeritus, 1996-2006. Bolender’s records constitute the first processed collection of the Kansas City Ballet Archives. The collection spans Bolender’s lifetime with the bulk of records dating after 1960. SAAKE, GARRETT. D.M.A. The Elements of Neoclassical Style in the Women‟s Choir Compositions of Irving Fine. (2011) Directed by Dr. Welborn Young. 65 pp. The composer Irving Fine died in 1962 at the age of forty-seven cutting short the life of an important figure in twentieth-century American music. Since Fine‟s life was relatively short, his musical output is proportionally small and often goes unstudied. Fine‟s contribution to the choral genre is particularly small but offers a unique perspective of composing for choir. Fine‟s complete oeuvre includes music in many genres that can stylistically be divided into two categories; tonal-neoclassical and atonal- neoclassical. Fine‟s early instrumental compositions are decidedly tonal-neoclassical and ultimately become serially based, a style that characterizes most of his later works. While Fine‟s instrumental music developed towards atonality, his works for women‟s choir did not. The choral music for women‟s choir remained rooted in the tonal- neoclassical style of his early period. The purpose of this study is to demonstrate that Irving Fine composed choral music for women‟s choir in an operative and nuanced style of choral writing that remained effectively tonally based and in the neoclassical style as understood and applied by Fine and his colleagues. This document places the selected choral works in context through a brief biography and discussion of neoclassicism as the term was understood during Fine‟s compositional period. The biography “Irving Fine: A Composer in His Time” by Phillip Ramey and information from the Irving Fine Collection at the Library of Congress are the primary sources of biographical information. -

THE UNITED STATES ARMY FIELD BAND SOLDIERS’ CHORUS The Legacy of AARON COPLAND Washington, D.C. “The Musical Ambassadors of the Army” he Soldiers’ Chorus, founded in 1957, is the vocal complement of the T United States Army Field Band of Washington, DC. The 29-member mixed choral ensemble travels throughout the nation and abroad, performing as a separate component and in joint concerts with the Concert Band of the “Musical Ambassadors of the Army.” The chorus has performed in all fifty states, Canada, Mexico, India, the Far East, and throughout Europe, entertaining audiences of all ages. The musical backgrounds of Soldiers’ Chorus personnel range from opera and musical theatre to music education and vocal coaching; this diversity provides unique programming flexibility. In addition to pre- senting selections from the vast choral repertoire, Soldiers’ Chorus performances often include the music of Broadway, opera, barbershop quartet, and Americana. This versatility has earned the Soldiers’ Chorus an international reputation for presenting musical excellence and inspiring patriotism. Critics have acclaimed recent appearances with the Boston Pops, the Cincinnati Pops, and the Detroit, Dallas, and National symphony orchestras. Other no- table performances include four world fairs, American Choral Directors Association confer- ences, music educator conven- tions, Kennedy Center Honors Programs, the 750th anniversary of Berlin, and the rededication of the Statue of Liberty. Harold Shapero Was Born on April 29, 1920, in Lynn, Massachusetts
Harold Shapero was born on April 29, 1920, in Lynn, Massachusetts. Raised there and in Newton, another Boston-area suburb, he was already playing the piano at age seven. By the time he reached college, he had achieved a good bit more musically than most teenagers. This included theory and composition lessons with Nicolas Slonimsky and Ernst Kenek, piano studies with Eleanor Kerr and Manfred Malkin, and a small but promising portfolio of concert music written for string trio and solo piano, even extensive experience as a jazz pianist and arranger. Shapero’s undergraduate years at Harvard University (1937–1941) saw the young man’s muse fall strongly under the spell of his teacher, Walter Piston, and the middle-period oeuvre of Igor Stravinsky, who had delivered the Charles Eliot Norton lectures at the school during the 1939–1940 academic year. Further studies with Paul Hindemith at Tanglewood (summers, 1940 and 1941) and Nadia Boulanger at the Longy School of Music (1942–1943) reinforced his stylistic inclinations within the then-dominant Neoclassic camp. Even at this time, Shapero was producing pieces far superior to those of the average music student. The sonatas for trumpet/piano duo and for piano four hands, the wind trio 3 Pieces for 3 Pieces, the String Quartet, and the Nine Minute Overture for Orchestra in fact compare favorably to the finest works of the era. The 1940s saw Shapero and his music gain much favorable attention. During this decade, he won nearly every major award a composer could hope for: the Rome Prize (1941—residency cancelled because of World War II), fellowships from the Naumburg (1942), Guggenheim (1947, 1948), and Fulbright (1948) foundations, the Joseph H. -

Spiritoso program notes by Steven Lowe Symphony in Brass Eric Ewazen Born: Cleveland, Ohio, March 1, 1954 A native of Cleveland, Ohio, Eric Ewazen earned his Bachelor of Music degree from the Eastman School of Music, and further studies at the Juilliard School netted him Master of Music and Doctor of Music degrees. His major teachers included some of the most notable figures among American composer/teachers, such as Milton Babbitt, Joseph Schwantner, and Gunther Schuller. His music has been recorded by both American and European labels and has been performed both in the States and abroad. He has demonstrated an affinity for writing for brass ensembles including his Symphony in Brass, commissioned by the Detroit Chamber Winds and composed in 1991. The engaging and celebratory work (recorded by Summit Records) has enjoyed many performances throughout the U.S. and Europe, energized by well-placed percussion and a heady arsenal of brass instruments that produce a world of both forceful and restrained sonorities. Alert listeners may recognize the music of the third movement from its use on NPR’s political entries. -

Emily Abrams: 10-11am on Wednesdays. Course description: This seminar will explore the childhood and early career of one of the 20th century's most renowned musicians and composers. Working in teams, students will fuse ethnography and archival research to explore the interlinking communities and institutions that shaped Bernstein's formative years. These include, but are by no means limited to, Congregation Mishkan Tefila in Newton, Boston Latin High School, Harvard (class of '39), and the BSO. Together, we will be launching a major collaborative research project. As a result, the expectations and work flow will differ greatly from the usual seminar. Instead of focusing on exams or individual research papers, “Leonard Bernstein’s Boston” involves lots of strategizing and working in groups. In other words, it requires a consistent time commitment and regular maintenance over the course of the semester, and it can only be successful if everyone pitches in at a steady pace. Regular attendance is essential. We will be functioning as a team, which means that it is crucial for everyone to be cooperative and collegial. All students will work on two levels: (1) preparation of and participation in class interviews and discussions, and (2) out-of-class research projects, pursued individually or in teams. There will be no midterm, final exam or traditional research paper.
