Casual Resistance: a Longitudinal Case Study of Video Gaming's Gendered
Running Head: CASUAL RESISTANCE Casual resistance: A longitudinal case study of video gaming’s gendered construction and related audience perceptions Amanda C. Cote This is an Accepted Manuscript of an article published by Oxford Academic in Journal of Communication on August 4, 2020, available online: https://doi.org/10.1093/joc/jqaa028 . Abstract: Many media are associated with masculinity or femininity and male or female audiences, which links them to broader power structures around gender. Media scholars thus must understand how gendered constructions develop and change, and what they mean for audiences. This article addresses these questions through longitudinal, in-depth interviews with female video gamers (2012-2018), conducted as the rise of casual video games potentially started redefining gaming’s historical masculinization. Analysis shows that participants have negotiated relationships with casualness. While many celebrate casual games’ potential for welcoming new audiences, others resist casual’s influence to safeguard their self-identification as gamers. These results highlight how a medium’s gendered construction may not be salient to consumers, who carefully navigate divides between their own and industrially-designed identities, but can simultaneously reaffirm existing power structures. Further, how participants’ views change over time emphasizes communication’s ongoing need for longitudinal audience studies that address questions of media, identity, and inclusion. Loading… The Journal of the Canadian Game Studies Association Vol 6(10): 71-90 http://loading.gamestudies.ca When I’m Sixty-Four: Beatles Rock Band and the Commodification of Nostalgia Jaigris Hodson York/Ryerson Universities [email protected] Abstract In 2009, only a few months after the game’s release, the popular trade magazine Advertising Age declared Beatles Rock Band (2009) one of America’s hottest brands ("America's hottest brands", 2009). This is quite a feat for a video game, and begs that we consider the reasons for the game’s success as well a the potential social consequences of this game as well as similar popular games. There are two major elements at work in the creation of Beatles Rock Band as a successful brand, and this paper conducts qualitative, participant-observation research in order to provide an analysis of the game that identifies both of them. First, the paper explores the Beatles as a brand that continues to provide emotional and spiritual value for consumers, and how the feelings associated with this brand have developed intertextually since the band first gained international popularity in 1962. Second, this paper will show how Beatles Rock Band can be viewed as a documentary game, and how, in portraying history, it also rewrites it in order to capitalize on a romanticized ideal of 1960s culture. This paper will show the ways that Beatles Rock Band draws on previous commercial texts associated with the Beatles brand to create a hyperreal fiction based on historic people and events. These texts help to connect people in fan communities that serve the commercial purposes of the game marketers. -

CHAPTER ONE What Is Casual Gaming? Over the past several years, the term “ casual game ” has been bandied about quite a bit. It gets used to describe so many different types of games that the definition has become rather blurred. But if we look at all of the ways that “ casual ” gets used, we can begin to tease out common elements that inform the design of these games: ● Rules and goals must be clear. ● Players need to be able to quickly reach proficiency. ● Casual game play adapts to a player’s life and schedule. ● Game concepts borrow familiar content and themes from life. While all game design should take these issues into account, these elements are of particular importance if you want to reach a broad audience beyond traditional gamers. This book will look at elements that a wide array of casual games share and draw out common lessons for approaching game design. Hopefully it will be of use not just to casual game designers, but to all game designers and even general experience designers as well. Everywhere you look these days, you see impact of casual games. More than 200 million people play casual games on the Internet, according to the Casual Games Association. This audience generated revenues in excess of $2.25 billion in 2007. 1 This may seem meager compared to the $41 billion posted by the entire game indus- try worldwide,2 but casual games currently rank as one of the fastest growing sec- tors of the game industry. As growth in the rest of the industry stagnated, the casual downloadable market barreled ahead. -

Page Board Report 2 Financial Statements 15 Other Information 62 1 CATALIS SE BOARD REPORT The Catalis Group is comprised of Catalis SE (the ‘Company’) as the ultimate parent company of two divisions: Testronic Laboratories (Testing Division) and Curve Digital Entertainment (Publishing Division). The Testing Division provides quality assurance services to the computer games and entertainment markets and operates from offices in the US, UK, and Poland. The Publishing Division is based in the UK and comprises a publisher of independent console and PC games (Curve Digital), a development studio for third party games (Kuju Limited), and a mobile game (Crack Attack). Overview During 2017 the Catalis Group has built upon the strong foundations laid down in the prior year to consolidate our position in the games testing market and delevop our publishing business, although the Film, TV & DVD business continues to face difficult market conditions. The Group has continued to reduce external debt levels and this now provides us with a strong platform for growth. The formation of the Publishing Division in 2016 provided the cornerstone for our objective of creating a major UK video games publisher and this Division has seen significant growth in revenues and profits during 2017. The Board expects this to continue as Curve Digital establishes itself in the marketplace. Within the Testing Division, growth in the Games testing segment was offset by some shrinkage in the Film and TV sector in 2017 due to lower DVD sales in the global market.
