Twelve species were found at two sites below 100 m near Kwerba, a small village adjacent to the Mamberamo River. Thirteen species were recorded at 'Moss Camp' at 1650 m in the Foja Mountains. Of these Hemicordulia ericetorum was previously only known from the central mountain range while Oreaeschna dictatrix was only known from Lake Paniai and the Cyclops Mountains. It is likely that more genera and species now known onlyfrom the central mountain range occur in the Foja Mountains and probably also the Van Rees Mountains. However one species, Argiolestes spec. nov. is probably endemie to the Foja Mountains. Although this collection includes only a small fraction of the diversity likely to be present in the mountains it is nonetheless of interest as it represents the first records of dragonflies from the area. -

JOIDES Resolution Expedition 363 (Western Pacific Warm Pool) Site
IODP Expedition 363: Western Pacific Warm Pool Site U1484 Summary Background and Objectives International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) Site U1484 (proposed Site WP-71A) is located ~15 km offshore the northern coast of Papua New Guinea at 3°07.93′S, 142°46.98′E, and 1031 m below sea level (mbsl). The site is situated on seismic reflection profile Line RR1313-WP7-2, ~900 m south of the cross-point with seismic reflection profile Line RR1313-WP7-5, and ~1.5 km east of the location of piston core RR1313 32PC. This ~7 m piston core and a companion gravity core from this site are characterized by a mixture of clay and volcanic sand containing relatively high numbers of planktonic and benthic foraminifers in an excellent state of preservation. Preliminary isotope analysis of planktonic foraminifers from the cores indicates >6 m of Holocene implying sedimentation rates of ~60 cm/ky. The multichannel seismic (MCS) survey shows >650 m sediment coverage at this site. The MCS profiles exhibit remarkable uniformity of acoustic stratification indicating a succession of alternating clay-, silt-, and sand- dominated sediment beds down to 0.28 s two-way traveltime (TWT) below the surface with estimated depth of 225 m below seafloor (mbsf), our target drilling depth. Below this depth, the MCS profiles suggest a disturbed zone. We note also a possible disturbed interval between 0.14 and 0.16 s TWT. Site U1484 is located in a tectonically complex region east of the Cyclops Mountains and west of the Sepik/Ramu river mouth. The region is bounded to the south by the Bewani-Torricelli fault zone on land, which links to offshore transform faults that eventually connect with seafloor spreading along the Bismarck Sea seismic lineation to the east (Baldwin et al., 2012). -

Governing New Guinea New Guinea Governing An oral history of Papuan administrators, 1950-1990 Governing For the first time, indigenous Papuan administrators share their experiences in governing their country with an inter- national public. They were the brokers of development. After graduating from the School for Indigenous Administrators New Guinea (OSIBA) they served in the Dutch administration until 1962. The period 1962-1969 stands out as turbulent and dangerous, Leontine Visser (Ed) and has in many cases curbed professional careers. The politi- cal and administrative transformations under the Indonesian governance of Irian Jaya/Papua are then recounted, as they remained in active service until retirement in the early 1990s. The book brings together 17 oral histories of the everyday life of Papuan civil servants, including their relationship with superiors and colleagues, the murder of a Dutch administrator, how they translated ‘development’ to the Papuan people, the organisation of the first democratic institutions, and the actual political and economic conditions leading up to the so-called Act of Free Choice. Finally, they share their experiences in the UNTEA and Indonesian government organisation. Leontine Visser is Professor of Development Anthropology at Wageningen University. The western half of the island of New Guinea comprises the Indonesian provinces of West Papua (Papua Barat) and Papua, collectively once called West Irian or Irian Jaya; the eastern half of the main island of New Guinea comprises the country of Papua New Guinea. We will be based in West Papua for this exhilarating, small-group birding adventure. Aside from the large landmass of New Guinea, the New Guinea region includes numerous small islands (some part of Indonesia and others part of Papua New Guinea), and we will visit one of these areas: Waigeo, part of the Raja Ampat Archipelago in West Papua (also known as the Northwestern Islands). Approximately 680 bird species have been recorded from West Papua, from slightly more than 700 for the whole New Guinea region. Some 550 species are considered breeding residents, with 279 New Guinea endemics (found in Indonesia and/or Papua New Guinea) and at least an additional 42 endemics found only in West Papua. There are also over 115 Palearctic and Australian migrant species and a range of seabirds which spend some of their time in West Papua. -

West Papua is also considered the safer alternative to PNG for seeing birds-of-paradise. Our Birding Tour West Papua will begin in the town of Manokwari, situated on the north- eastern tip of New Guinea's Bird's Head, or “Vogelkop”, Peninsula. From here we will travel straight through for five nights in the nearby Arfak Mountains, where we will search for a fabulous series of birds, renowned in birders’ circles as the “Vogelkop endemics”. The second leg of our birding adventure takes us to Sorong, on the opposite side of the Bird's Head Peninsula, for a relaxed afternoon's birding outside the town. Then we will spend three days in the spectacular Raja Ampat Islands off Sarong on Waigeo, one of this archipelago’s four major islands. On our return journey to Sorong we will stop for a few hours on a tiny atoll in Dampier Strait for birding, searching for regional island specialties. This tour can be combined with our Birding Tour Indonesia: Sulawesi and Halmahera 2018 to explore Indonesia’s avian fauna in both the Indomalayan and Australasian ecozones. There are dozens of spectacular birds-of- paradise, most of which have an absurdly cool display, and fabulous arrays of pigeons, doves, parrots, and kingfishers. The gaudy marquee birds are supported by several great island-endemic and regional endemic families like owlet-nightjars, bowerbirds, Australasian warblers and robins, berrypeckers, jewel-babblers, bellbirds, Ifrita, and Ploughbill. There are dozens and dozens of birds on our list from this tour that could EASILY be picked as the top bird of a tour anywhere else in the world. The quality of birds on this island is that high. The “top ten” sightings below give a taste of the wonders of Papuan birding, but neglect dozens of other world-class spectacular birds that we saw on this tour.
