Subscribe and save THOSE OF US who have felt a racist's stare know that it scalds our skin and triggers emotions ranging from anger to shame. Last year, that anger boiled over in race riots that rocked the US and Britain. Of course, those riots sprang from a complex web of causes, but it's also true that opponents on each side had one simple thing in common: the colour of their skins. It might seem a long way from the streets of Cincinnati or Bradford to the hospitals and research institutes where scientists seek to explain the diversity of human biology. But well-meaning doctors say they, too, need to pay attention to race. They argue that it's a useful indicator of people's predisposition to disease or response to drugs. Meanwhile, other scientists think that this is nonsense. Geneticists know that the racial differences most of us perceive are little more than skin-deep. They say that medical research and treatment based on visible racial characteristics is a waste of time at best and downright dangerous at worst. Even so, the latest genetic data has added a further twist to the argument. It turns out that you can group people into genetically similar clusters after all—it's just that they don't correspond to conventional racial groups. But they may provide doctors with better categories for research and treatment until the time when diagnosis and therapy can be tailored to an individual patient's genes. -

The Romans were known for taking technology and advancements from other peoples they encountered and making them their own. This pattern holds true in military affairs; indeed, little of the Roman military was indigenously developed. This dissertation looks at the origins of the Roman’s mainline weapons systems from the beginning of Roman Republic expansion in the fourth century BC to the abandonment of Western-style armaments in favor of Eastern style ones beginning in the late-third century AD. This dissertation determines that the Romans during that time relied predominately on the Celtic peoples of Europe for the majority of their military equipment. One arrives at this conclusion by examining at the origins of the major weapons groups: armor, shields, spears, swords, and missile weapons. This determination is based on the use of ancient written sources, artistic sources, and archaeological sources. It also uses the large body of modern scholarship on the individual weapons. -

MENU ECONOMY & POLITICS All in one Conversation with Professor Dragan Primorac 20 DECEMBER 2017, ZDRAVKO BASARIĆ Special Hospital St.Catherine I have that great honor to talk to Professor Dragan Primorac, our WSI’s esteemed guest. For the readers of WSI magazine, I use this opportunity to share a conversation with this prominent world scientist. Prof. Dragan Primorac is a pediatrician, forensic expert and geneticist. He is former Minister of Science, Education and Sports of The Republic of Croatia and he is the first recipient of the title “Global Penn State University Ambassador”. Currently he serves as the Chair of the International Affairs Committee of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences. Prof. Primorac is one of the pioneers in DNA identification of skeletal human remains from mass graves. He authored close to two hundred scientific papers and abstracts in clinical and molecular medicine, genetics, forensic science, population genetics, genetic legacy of Homo sapiens and education, science and technology policy. Currently, he has particular interest in metabolic bone and cartilage disorders, sports medicine as well as in personalized and regenerative medicine. Dr. Primorac was invited speaker at more than 100 conferences all around the world. His work was published in most cited journals including Science and Nature. Dr. Primorac is a pioneer in the application of DNA analysis for identification of war victims. His papers have been cited more than 3900 times (Google Scholar). He is currently honorary citizen of five cities in and outside of Croatia. Several renowned media outlets, both electronic and print, have reported on the results of his work, such as the New York Times, USA Today, Chicago Tribune, Hartford Courant, JAMA, Lancet, Science, NBC, Channel 8 (Connecticut TV Station), etc. -
