Economic Violence Or the Law of War? Swedish Contributions From
KATARZYNA WAGNER University of Warsaw Faculty of History ORCID: 0000-0002-5454-6151 Economic violence or the law of war? Swedish contributions from the period of the Great Northern War as an example of extraordinary provisions imposed on the residents of the cities within the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth Keywords: contributions, taxes, Polish-Swedish wars, Great Northern War, Polish-Lithu- anian Commonwealth, 18th century Słowa kluczowe: kontrybucje, podatki, wojny polsko-szwedzkie, Wielka Wojna Północna, Rzeczpospolita Obojga Narodów, XVIII w. INTRODUCTION Słownik Języka Polskiego [Dictionary of the Polish Language] offers three defini- tions of the term ‘contribution’: ‘1. a pecuniary tribute imposed on the defeated state by the victorious state in the course of a peace treaty; 2. historically, during a war: forced payment in money or food collected by the military; 3. historically, a charge levied by a ruler on a country he had conquered; protection money, tribute, tax’1. While analysing modern tax sources, it turns out that—due to their specificity as well as to the time and manner of their collection—the definition proposed by the Dictio- nary, albeit true, is incomplete, and it is imperative to include additional components. The analysis of the definition proposed above will be possible thanks to regis- ters of Swedish contributions imposed by the occupier on specific cities. This paper aims to answer the question about the practice (and legitimacy) of Swedish troops imposing contributions on the inhabitants of cities in the Polish-Lithuanian Com- monwealth. Another issue will be to determine what place they occupied within the general system of contributions upon which the Swedish way of waging wars was based. -

Bertil van Boer The Greatest Opera Never Written: Bengt Lidner’s Medea (1784) hen the Gustavian opera was inaugurated on 18 January 1773 with a performance of Johan Wellander and Fran- W cesco Antonio Baldassare Uttini’s Thetis och Pelée, the an- ticipation of the new cultural establishment was palpable among the audiences in the Swedish capital. In less than a year, the new king, Gustav III, had turned the entire leadership of the kingdom topsy-turvy through his bloodless coup d’état, and in the consolida- tion of his rulership, he had embarked upon a bold, even politically risky venture, the creation of a state-sponsored public opera that was to reflect a new cultural nationalism, with which he hoped to imbue the citizenry with an understanding of the special role he hoped they would play in the years to come. -

Historical Pond-Breeding of Cyprinids in Sweden and Finland
CHAPTER 4 Historical Pond-Breeding of Cyprinids in Sweden and Finland Madeleine Bonow and Ingvar Svanberg This chapter describes and analyses the history of pond-breeding of fish in Sweden and Finland (which was an integral part of Sweden until 1809) from late medieval times until around 1900.1 Very little is known about the history of aquaculture in Sweden and Finland. Most published overviews are superficial. There are very few studies based on sources and hardly anything has been written by historians using modern methods and source criticism. We are therefore uncovering a long, although now broken, tradetion of fish cultivation in ponds which has left scant traces in the written record or the physical environment. We need to make some clear distinctions about types of aquaculture since much confusion arises from writers not differentiating among natural fish populations in natural or artificial ponds, unselective capture for stocking or storage of wild fish, selective stock and grow operations, and human management of breeding and species-specific stocking and artificial feeding or nutrient management. We deal mainly with the last case. We do not include marine aquaculture, which is a very recent phenomenon in Scandinavia. The overall purpose of our chapter is to discuss how fish kept in fishponds have been introduced, farmed and spread in Sweden and Finland in early 1 This chapter was written as part of “The story of Crucian carp (Carassius carassius) in the Baltic Sea region: history and a possible future” led by Professor Håkan Olsén at Södertörn University (Sweden) and funded by the Baltic Sea Foundation. -
Playing King
ISSN 2002-3898 © Maria Berlova and Nordic Theatre Studies DOI: https://doi.org/10.7146/nts.v26i1.109744 Published with support from Nordic Board for Periodicals in the Humanities and Social Sciences (NOP-HS) Playing King Maria Berlova ABSTRACT The Swedish King Gustav III ruled from 1771 to 1792. His departure to the Russian war in 1788 was staged as a grandiose spectacle. The King, who was also a playwright, made the day of his departure coincide with the symbolic date of June 23. This was the date that Gustav II Adolph (ruled 1611-32) went off to the Thirty Years? War in 1628. The parallel between Gustav III and the great Swedish warrior King was further emphasized by his costume made in the style of Gustav Adolph. In this article, the author analyzes Gustav III?s departure to war as a theatrical event and explores the borders of theatrical events in the late eighteenth century. Gustav III?s ceremonial departure is placed in the framework of Nikolai Evreinov?s and Yuri Lotman?s theories of theatricality which show how the King applied theatrical means to everyday life in order to theatricalize it, i.e. to make it spectacular and symbolic. By theatricalizing life Gustav III idealized his role of king and thus performed his power. Theatricalization of political life not only adorned life but it also significantly changed reality; the theatrical playing of the King entailed real consequences ? Gustav III enacted his role of a monarch in a memorable way and achieved his political goals. The interaction between politics and theater is the main focus of the article. -

Flera kvinnliga brevskrivare förekommer i samlingen.
