Fifteen integrated transdermal implanted tags were deployed in juvenile and adult whales. Tag duration varied between 10 and 237 days (average of 90 days). Movement patterns showed substantial individual and yearly variation. Tagged whales visited the outer Patagonian shelf east of Península Valdés and north of the Falkland/Malvinas Islands, the Scotia Sea near South Georgia/Islas Georgia del Sur and the South Sandwich Islands/Islas Sandwich del Sur, and the South Atlantic basin between 38 and 58oS. State-space models were used to estimate behavioral states and suggested areas of potential foraging importance in the Patagonian shelf, the subtropical convergence and the continental shelf break east of South Georgia/Islas Georgia del Sur.

  • Breeding of Anthus Furcatus (Aves: Motacillidae) in Northern Patagonia, with a Review of the Breeding Biology of the Species
ORNITOWGIA NEOTROPICAL 6: 37-52, 1995 @ The Neotropical Ornithological Society BREEDING OF ANTHUS FURCATUS (AVES: MOTACILLIDAE) IN NORTHERN PATAGONIA, WITH A REVIEW OF THE BREEDING BIOLOGY OF THE SPECIES Allison Y. Andors* & Fran~ois Yuilleumier Department of Ornithology, Amerícan Museum of Natural Hístory, Central Park West at 79th Street, New York, New York 10024-5192, U.S.A Resumen. • (Patagonia): Conservation Implications for Right Whales
    J. CETACEAN RES. MANAGE. (SPECIAL ISSUE) 2, 145–151, 2001 145 Demand-driven commercial whalewatching in Península Valdés (Patagonia): conservation implications for right whales Mariana Rivarola*, Claudio Campagna+ and Alicia Tagliorette† Contact e-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT One of the largest remaining populations of the southern right whale, Eubalaena australis, breeds along the coast of Península Valdés, in Argentine Patagonia. The area offers excellent opportunities for whalewatching because it is possible, with predictability, to have close-up views of animals of all ages. During 11 years, from 1987 to 1997, more than 337,000 tourists took part in boat excursions to watch right whales. The demand increased during this period over 14 times from 5,214 tourists in 1987 to 73,726 in 1997. From 1991 to 1994, more than 8,000 boat trips were required to satisfy a demand of 125,000 people. Most whalewatching involved pregnant animals or mothers and calves that often attempted to avoid the boats. In 1997, whalewatching generated direct revenues of at least $US 1 million in boat fees, and direct plus indirect revenues of over $US 15 million (not including travel costs to Patagonia). The rapid growth of tourism in relation to whales has undisputed economic and public-awareness benefits but it is also raising concern about potentially detrimental effects on the animals. The lack of a management plan and of estimates of a tourist ‘carrying capacity’ allows customer demand to be the main driving force behind a commercial activity based on this vulnerable species. KEYWORDS: RIGHT WHALE; WHALEWATCHING; SOUTHERN HEMISPHERE; SOUTH AMERICA; BEHAVIOUR; SUSTAINABILITY; BREEDING GROUNDS INTRODUCTION of the activity and evaluate the short-term effects of Whalewatching is one of the most rapidly growing and whalewatching on the behaviour of whales.

  • The Impact of the SAR-Cov 2 Pandemic on the Whale-Watching Activity in Puerto Pirámide (Península Valdés, Chubut, Argentina): Social and Ecological Aspects
The impact of the SAR-Cov 2 pandemic on the whale-watching activity in Puerto Pirámide (Península Valdés, Chubut, Argentina): Social and ecological aspects Santiago Fernández Lamama- CCT CONICET CENPAT, Argentina SUMMARY Whale watching in Patagonia began in 1973, with the southern right whale (Eubalaena australis) as target species. The number of visitors doing this activity has increased over the years. Whale-watching pressure to meet current demands may be changing the distribution of whales in the area. The cessation of activities due to the SAR-Cov 2 pandemic could be a unique opportunity to assess the effect of the vessel-whale interaction, and to analyze the socio-economic aspects of the actors involved in this activity. Project Description General description: Whale-watching is a commercial activity that has increased exponentially in recent times (Hoyt 2001; O’Connor et al. 2009). In Chubut province, Argentina, whale-watching activity started in Puerto Pirámide, a little town located inside the Península Valdés Protected Area (Rivarola et al. 2001), in 1973, with the Southern Right whale (Eubalaena australis, SRW) as the target species. In the beginning, very few visitors arrived to the area. This has changed, and nowadays it is one of the places chosen by national and international tourists, with more than 100,000 visitors in 2010. This annual demand makes it the main economic and social activity in Puerto Pirámide and one of the top 3 in the region (Chalcobsky et al. 2017). There are currently six companies licenced to carry out these whale-watching trips performing between 24 to 48 daily departures (Chalcobsky et al.

In 2003, the Southern Right Whale Health Monitoring Program was established by a consortium of NGOs to monitor the health status of this population by post-mortem examinations. Previous reports to the IWC included information on the mortalities through 2013. Here we update information for the 2014-2015 seasons. A total of 737 dead whales were recorded on the Península Valdés calving ground and surrounding areas along the Argentine coast since 2003. The number of dead whales was 23 in 2014 and 42 in 2015. As in previous years, most of the dead whales were newborn calves (87% of strandings in 2014 and 90% in 2015; 89% for both years combined). More dead whales were recorded in Golfo Nuevo (74% in both years) than in Golfo San José (22% in both years).
