Language and culture are taught through historical content-based lessons focused on medieval Toledo and Sepharad. The program «Sepharad: Language, history and culture in Toledo» includes two one- week intensive courses, jointly organized by the University of Castilla-La Mancha (UCLM) and the Instituto Cervantes. The courses will take place in Toledo, a city that is also known as the City of Three Cultures because of the historical coexistence of Christians, Jews and Muslims inside its walls. The program has also obtained the support of the National Sephardic Museum, the School of Translators of Toledo and the Sefarad Centre. TOLEDO Toledo is a city with one of the richest histories in Spain. Muslims, Jews and Christians lived together in harmony here for centuries, leaving their indelible mark on Toledo’s streets, monuments and buildings. Its old town was declared a World Heritage Site in 1986. This centre sits majestically above the Tagus River and now, represents one of the most visited sites in all of Spain. UCLM has established its presence in Toledo at two different campuses: the Faculties of Social Sciences and Humanities in the city’s historical quarter; and the Science-Technology campus in the old Weapons Factory. With over 5,300 students in 2015, this complex has been renovated with buildings equipped with non-polluting alternative energies. There are several buildings in the city’s historic quarter, standing out among them are the convents of San Pedro Mártir and Madre de Dios. OBJECTIVES The program «Sepharad: Language, history and culture in Toledo» is targeted at students of Spanish language and culture, with at least B1 language proficiency level, who want to improve their Spanish language skills while learning about a key period of the History of Spain at the same time. Special activity: Excursion. Sunset among the windmills (Consuegra Sepharad Course METHODOLOGY Each of the courses takes place an intense way during five days. The courses are developed through historical classes taught by experts in each subject. Each day the morning is dedicated to lectures and classroom work on a central theme. Practical activities of Spanish as a Foreign Language are also developed, with the objective that the student works and improves his competences of expression, comprehension and vocabulary skills, in our language. The students have lunch together, live together, and develop in groups the cultural and recreational activities of the afternoons. Activities that are related and complete what has been studied in the morning. EVALUATION Students who have participated in the courses will receive a certificate of attendance or achievement issued by the Instituto Cervantes and the Fundación General. Without final exam. Participation will be compulsory, and absences it may not exceed 15% of the total duration of the course, regardless of the reason for it. The July Open Summer Intensive Course is a course aimed at students of any level, who wants to get the most out of this summer month by improving their Spanish in four weeks, having fun while learning, knowing Toledo and its surroundings, and sharing learning and experiences with people from all over the world. This program includes, at no additional cost, 10 extracurricular activities of interest to the student, including guided visits to museums and places of interest in Toledo, as well as workshops on Spanish cinema. In addition, two excursions are offered to Valsaín (Segovia) and Candeleda (Ávila). The course will take place in Toledo, a city that is also known as the City of Three Cultures because of the historical coexistence of Christians, Jews and Muslims inside its walls. OBJECTIVES From any initial level of Spanish, over four weeks, students will improve their skills in written communication, oral communication, phonetics, vocabulary and grammar. The July Open Summer Intensive Course is a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the Spanish language and culture, where at the same time language skills are improved, the Hispanic world is lived with intensity in a context of multicultural coexistence. Expert teachers in Spanish as a Foreign Language, teach classes that have a dynamic and communicative methodological approach. We will use the city of Toledo as our Spanish classroom.
