The city lies on the eastern part of the Ilha de São Luis in the Bay of São Marcos. At this point of the Brazilian coast, the tidal range is about seven meters, which leaves at low tide huge sandy areas unexposed. Upon arrival, reception at the airport and transfer to hotel. Overnight. (B) DAY 5 SAO LUIS - ALCANTARA - SAO LUIS Breakfast at the hotel. Full day Alcantara, a small town in the north of the state of Maranhão. It lies at the Baía de São Marcos Bay, in front of São Luís, the capital of the state. Alcântara was once one of the largest and richest cities of Maranhão, but lost that status later with São Luís. From its former wealth still testify numerous sites which are partly severely damaged or destroyed and since 1948 are listed as protected buildings. The Porto do Jacaré, the old port of the city, is located on the same branch of the river and was built in the 18th century. Early transfer to the airport for your flight to Belo Horizonte and immediate transfer to Ouro Preto, a city in the state of Minas Gerais. Because of its Baroque old town, it is unique in the world and a major tourist magnet in Brazil. Since 1980, the old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The name Ouro Preto means in English black gold. The town got its name because of its huge gold reserves, which were coloured by iron oxide contamination slightly black. Arrival at the hotel, and registration. The rest of the day is at leisure. Overnight. (B) DAY 7 OURO PRETO - MARIANA - OURO PRETO After breakfast, tour the city of Ouro Preto with the main sights, including the many Baroque churches from the colonial era and the Tiradentes Square. Lunch in the city. Afterwards, we visit a small town named Mariana, which lies on the so-called "golden circle", in the neighbourhood of the famous World Heritage Site Ouro Preto. With this, the Brazilian Baroque influenced strongly the appearance of Mariana. Go back to the pousada. Overnight. (B) (L) DAY 8 OURO PRETO - CONGONHAS - SAO JOAO DEL REY - TIRADENTES After breakfast, you will visit two cities, Congonhas and Sao Joao del Rey. The small town of Congonhas is located in a valley 85 km south of Belo Horizonte. It owes its origin to the discovery of gold at the Rio Maranhão. It now lives mainly in mining and metal processing and tourism. Since 1985, the Sanctuary of Bom Jesus de Matozinhos with sculptures by Aleijadinho and the Stations of the Cross are part of the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites. Continue to São João del Rei, which is located 185 km from Belo Horizonte at the foot of the Serra do Lenheiro and halfway between Rio de Janeiro and Belo Horizonte. It is the southernmost of the Baroque cities. After lunch, we will continue to Tiradentes, registration at the Pousada and a short tour of the city. Overnight. (B) (L) DAY 9 TIRADENTES - PETROPOLIS - RIO DE JANEIRO After breakfast at the Pousada, trip to Petropolis with tour and lunch. Petrópolis was founded in 1825 as a place of Germans, especially Tyrolean immigrants. In 1843, the Brazilian Emperor Dom Pedro II wished there the establishment of an imperial summer residence. Born in Mainz, Julius Friedrich Koeler was contracted to design and build the palace. Arrival in Rio de Janeiro late afternoon. Registration at the hotel and overnight. (B) (L) DAY 10 RIO DE JANEIRO After breakfast at the hotel, visit the Corcovado (English: the hunchback), a mountain on which the symbol of the city is located, with its 38 meters high Christ Redeemer (including base). Continue to visit the other landmarks of the city, El Pao de Acucar (Sugar Loaf), a 395 m high, steep, towering granite cliff on the peninsula in the south of the Urca Botafogo Bay, where the Guanabara Bay meets the Atlantic Ocean. It carries his name because its shape resembles a sugar loaf. We will take a funicular to go on to the Sugarloaf Mountain (called O Bondinho), whose sides are fully glazed. Lunch at a barbecue restaurant. In the afternoon, visit the colonial town. Back to the hotel. Overnight. (B) (L) DAY 11 RIO DE JANEIRO - PARATY After breakfast, drive to Paraty, a city located between Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. Its historic old town was declared a national monument in 1958. The city stands out for its almost perfectly preserved historical architecture from the 17th Century. All houses are painted white with colourful window and doorframes. The roads have a rough cobblestone, which was transferred by slaves. One of the villas, the Villa Boa Vista, is the birthplace of the mother of Thomas Mann (german novelist and writer), Julia Mann, who spent here the first seven years of her life. Afternoon tour of the city´s historical center followed by dinner at a local restaurant. Overnight stay in a Pousada in Paraty. (B) (D) DAY 12 PARATY Breakfast at the hotel. Palermo has maintained its identity over the centuries as a complex and multicultural site. In 1993 the local government of Palermo, supported by the Sicilian Region with specific Laws and funds, launched a process of regeneration of the historic centre, restoring public monuments as well as encouraging recovery of private houses. A specific planning instrument such as the Piano Particolareggiato Esecutivo (PPE) was implemented and a special office was established to coordinate activities and funding. Local community developed a pro-active attitude over the years, demanding local government to promote more cooperation and coordination between the different stakeholders involved in the recovery process. The civil society emphasised the need to intervene not only on the urban and building fabric but also on the social one, starting from the weakest sections of the population. The support of civil society, with its bottom up approach, and the strong political will of local government, determined in the regeneration of the historic centre, made possible to speed up the process.

    The Pilgrim’s Way Following the Camino de Santiago From Bilbao to Santiago de Compostela May 3rd - 12th 2018 In AD 1095, when a pilgrimage to Jerusalem became impossible dur- ing the First Crusade, the best alternative to guarantee a remission of half your time in purgatory was a trip to Santiago de Compostela in northwest Spain. This route became known as the Pilgrim’s Way or the Way of St. James. Chaucer’s Wife of Bath went there and obviously enjoyed the experi- ence as she then chose to go on a second pilgrimage to Canterbury. But it wasn’t just a reduction of time in purgatory that made people take to the road on pilgrimages: social fashion, adventure, the opportunity to find a partner in marriage, or just company and good food (and sometimes even crime), were all lures which attracted people to set off. In fact, many of these are the same attractions and reasons why people go on tours today! To most Madrilenians, as well as to the hipsters who live there and to tourists, the quarter is known as Malasaña. For older, retired residents of modest means it is Maravillas. Yet, its official, and least known, name is Universidad. Whatever its name, this neighbourhood is not just home to a large variety of small shops, old and new, traditional and hipster, to mainstream franchises on its fringes and small, specialized commercial spaces, old bars many without charm and innovative ones in old buildings; Malasaña is what Jane Jacobs (1961) would call an Urban Village. This article has two main goals: to show how, while maintaining some old charms, the urban village of Malasaña has been reconfigured by the new micro cultures of alternative groups, creative classes, hipsters and visiting suburbanites. It also intends to show how this bottom-up transformation connects with global trends found elsewhere. There are two major dynamic drives in this neighbourhood; one from within — the traditional, old quarter with a distinctive mix of population, the other from without — the transient (but key) inhabitants of the current service-oriented urban realm, mostly youth from other areas of the city and the suburbs and tourists. As a metropolis, Madrid is a good example of emergent practices related to the social, cultural and economic dimensions that reshape a vital, singular place of the old city.
