Bitty Baby, a longtime, lovable playtime companion to millions of girls ages 3 and up, now has even more options to encourage nurturing play, including 11 different dolls with various skin tones and hair- and eye-color combinations, beautifully illustrated picture books filled with heartwarming adventures, and new premium play sets and plush animals, as well as online activities for girls and parents. With so many new options to choose from, every little girl can now find the Bitty Baby doll that's just right for her. After selecting her doll from the expanded choices, a girl will receive her Bitty Baby doll dressed in a signature sleeper, along with a special "wishing star" keepsake toy and Bitty Baby and Me, the first in a series of five hardcover picture books that inspire fun ways to play. Several new outfits in various designs are also available to allow a girl to further personalize her Bitty Baby. The new Bitty Baby picture-book collection, brought to life by Newbery Honor Award author Kirby Larson and award-winning illustrator Sue Cornelison, follows a little girl and her beloved Bitty Baby doll as they discover the world around them. The heartwarming tales help little girls shine bright by encouraging curiosity, generosity, confidence, and kindness. Each book also comes with a special "For Parents" section that focuses on the social and emotional experience of preschoolers and offers parents tips to help their little girls become more confident, patient, and independent. Medina A candidate for the degree of Master of Arts, And hereby certify that, in their opinion, it is worthy of acceptance. Professor David L. Brunsma Professor Mary Jo Neitz Professor Lisa Y. Flores DEDICATION My journey to and through the master’s program has never been a solitary one. My family has accompanied me every step of the way, encouraging and supporting me: materially and financially, emotionally and spiritually, and academically. From KU to MU, you all loved me and believed in me throughout every endeavor. This thesis is dedicated to my family, and most especially, to my parents Alicia and Francisco Medina. Mom and Dad: As a child, I often did not recognize and, far too often, took for granted the sacrifices that you made for me. Sitting and writing a thesis is a difficult task, but it is not as difficult as any of the tasks you two undertook to ensure my well-being, security, and happiness and to see me through to this goal. For all of the times you went without (and now, as an adult, I know that there were many) so that we would not, thank you.

  • By Lori Siuta It Was Charles Caleb Colton
By Lori Siuta It was Charles Caleb Colton who once said that “imitation is the sincerest form of flattery” and while he may not have had children in mind, it is what comes to mind for me. Children emulate their parent’s behavior and I don’t think I personally realized the extent until I watched my oldest, Morgan, interact with her baby dolls. She burped the baby, gave her kisses, and scolded the baby for “not listening”. She may have even punctuated the scold with a throw across the room, which I can assure you I have never done to my child. Even though my daughter displayed some violent tendencies I would like to think I do not possess, I did everything I could to ensure Morgan kept on playing “mommy.” For Morgan’s 3rd birthday Grandma gave Morgan a Bitty Baby and her aunt gave her a diaper bag with baby doll diapers. Morgan was so excited and immediately went to work changing her new baby’s diaper. Every night Morgan would tuck her baby in and between Morgan and Amelia, my youngest, the baby had her diaper changed at least every 10 minutes! Amelia loves the doll so much, she is willing to share her baby and blanket! As Morgan gets older she is more and more fascinated with clothes and is finally showing an interest in changing her doll’s clothes more than her doll’s diapers. Since I’ve been obsessed with finding cute outfits for my girls before they were even born, I think we’re both finding another connection! Lucky for us, The Gingerbread House sells Sophia’s doll clothes that fit not only the 15 inch Bitty Babies, but also the larger 18 inch American Girl dolls.

  • Pleasant Company's American Girls Collection
PLEASANT COMPANY’S AMERICAN GIRLS COLLECTION: THE CORPORATE CONSTRUCTION OF GIRLHOOD by NANCY DUFFEY STORY (Under the direction of JOEL TAXEL) ABSTRACT This study examines the modes of femininity constructed by the texts of Pleasant Company’s The American Girls Collection in an effort to disclose their discursive power to perpetuate ideological messages about what it means to be a girl in America. A feminist, post structual approach, informed by neo-Marxist insights, is employed to analyze the interplay of gender, class, and race, as well as the complex dynamics of the creation, marketing, publication and distribution of the multiple texts of Pleasant Company, with particular emphasis given to the historical fiction books that accompany the doll-characters. The study finds that the selected texts of the The American Girls Collection position subjects in ways that may serve to reinforce rather than challenge traditional gender behaviors and privilege certain social values and social groups. The complex network of texts positions girls as consumers whose consumption practices may shape identity. The dangerous implications of educational books, written, at least in part, as advertisements for products, is noted along with recommendations that parents and teachers assist girl-readers in engaging in critical inquiry with regard to popular culture texts.
