It took over the responsibilities of the Arts and Humanities Research Board. On that date all of the AHRB’s activities, assets and liabilities transferred to the AHRC. The AHRC is a non-departmental public body (NDPB) sponsored by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills, along with the other six Research Councils. It is governed by its Council, which is responsible for the overall strategic direction of the organisation. Arts and Humanities Research Council, Polaris House, North Star Avenue, Swindon SN2 1FL Chairman’s Foreword Diversity and Dialogue Two features jump out at me as I read this report: the diversity of what we do and the range of dialogues that support our activities. The diversity has to be embedded in a framework so that we can plan effectively and allocate our funds. We present this in our Delivery Plan, in Strategic Plans and papers for Comprehensive Spending Reviews. It is not straightforward to build an adequate vocabulary to distinction then becomes blurred: everything is responsive – encompass the range of our activities and the dialogues that based on consultation; and everything is strategic – based on a support them. Its dissemination (and hence its impact) through the ecosystem is a secondary but important activity – a two-way process characterised as knowledge exchange. This is dialogue about what we have funded. The report also captures the variety of dialogues that helps the Council determine what we will fund: future research priorities. We sometimes refer to responsive or strategic modes of funding, but this should now be seen as unhelpful: what is demonstrated in this report is that virtually everything we do is based on consultation. We, as a Council, are not in a position to articulate research frontiers: we need to root what we do in consultation with researchers – the academic community, and users – a wide variety of stakeholders. The new campus will be known as the Aberystwyth Delegation Innovation and Diffusion Campus (AIDC). The Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) will invest up to £14.5m to help establish the world leading Aberystwyth Innovation and 10 Enhancement Diffusion Campus for food and renewable energy and will be a key partner in of IT facilities delivering this ground-breaking project. Contributions from other stakeholders, including the University, are expected to bring the total investment in this project to over £35m. In this issue, we outline the findings ofChanging Places, a study led by Professor Simonetta Manfredi that delved into the experiences of women on both corporate and university boards. We also share new developments and networking opportunities from Board Apprentice and the New Schools Network, and introduce a new network for women in STEM careers. Last but not least, we introduce and welcome recent joiners to the HE working group. Our Higher Education 30% Club mission: to increase consensus across the UK higher education sector on the value of diverse and transferable leadership skills, particularly between companies and universities. Our objectives for 2017 We’re undertaking several initiatives this year to build consensus across the UK higher education sector on the value of diverse and transferable leadership skills, particularly between corporates and universities. We’re hosting a workshop, open to the 42 university members of the 30% Club (and hosted by Universities UK at its September conference), to create an action plan based on ideas raised at the launch of Professor Manfredi’s Changing Places research (see following article). One idea up for discussion is a single point of contact to disseminate those research findings. And with support from UCL’s Equality and Diversity team, we’re mapping the landscape of UK organisations with a mission to improve gender diversity in the leadership of UK higher education institutions.

These gender-balanced boards can be found in every Mission Group, in all income quartiles and in all but one region. • In the 166 HEIs in the UK, women are 32% of all governing body members. • Women are less well represented as Chairs and Vice Chancellors than as governing body members.     Men and women working together for real change November 2017 30% Club . The 30% Club is a global campaign that signs up Chairs and CEOs to take action to create a better balance of men and women at all levels of their organisations as a business imperative rather than a ‘women’s issue’. The Club launched in the UK in 2010 with a target of a minimum of 30% women on FTSE‐100 boards by 2015. There are 233 members of the UK Club and the proportion of female FTSE‐100 directors has risen from 12.5% to 27.9%*. As of 2016 the scope of the above target was extended to a minimum of 30% women on FTSE‐350 boards by end 2020 (currently at 24.5%*) . In tandem with the above –and in order to ensure that this 30% remains sustainable –we have also established a pipeline target of a minimum of 30% women at senior management level of FTSE‐100 companies by 2020 (currently 25.2% at Executive Committee + direct report levels**). The 30% Club is becoming an international community. It complements and amplifies individual company efforts and existing initiatives through collaboration, sharing of best practice, measurable goals and joined‐up actions. The 30% Club does not believe in mandatory quotas. Instead, the 30% Club is aiming for meaningful, sustainable, business‐ led change, as recommended by the Davies and Hampton‐Alexander Reviews. Scarce representation of women at senior levels is a global phenomenon. Local 30% Clubs have been launched in the US, Hong Kong, Ireland, Southern Africa, Australia, Malaysia, Canada, Italy, the GCC and Turkey.
