Firstly, FUSIONpresents had the honour of speaking at the Surrey Board of Trade’s Mayor’s Art Awards on June 9 at the Sheraton Guildford in Surrey, alongside Rob Calder from Secret Study Projects and Thea Karki from Playing for Change Foundation. The nature of the speeches were on how to help Surrey become a Music City, and the overwhelming message was that quality music not only brings business to neighbourhoods and communities, but also that music is the universal unifier and investing into it quite simply makes the world a better place by creating vibrancy, transcending boundaries and bringing cultures, genders, and people of all ages and demographics together. VANCOUVER ARTIST HIGHLIGHT : BRUCE’S CORNER MOLLY GRIFFIN & TRISTAN PAXTON I grew up in Calgary with a tight group of friends with similar interests: sports, cars, music and girls; not necessarily in that order. Thinking back now, I'm not so sure they were all interested in music. I think that those who were into music kind of forced our tastes onto others, and since they wouldn't have listened to music otherwise, it was all they would know. Now I wouldn't want to suggest that this was a crime to not have a natural love of music, as we're all wired differently, but it is a shame.

Back in the day when I got a driver’s license, the state of the art listening device was the eight track deck. A company called K-Tel would sell these Best of the Year singles, and for a friend, this was his only source of music - Good music. And since most of the songs were one hit wonders, it was really the only place to hear it.

Calgary is an hour east of Banff, and as teenagers we spent many weekends up camping with a dozen people taking up 3 campsites. There was always an album dominating the music choice and they would get played continuously. Hotel California, Rumours, Boston, Grease, Abba, Billy Joel, Rolling Stones, ELO Molly Griffin and Tristan Paxton are a husband and wife musical team in and of course, Zeppelin. On a recent visit home, I met up with some of these which Tristan plays guitar and Molly sings and writes. The couple were friends (at least the ones still around) and the same old music was playing.
