A Weekly Publication of the Sprague High School Community Volume 45 ● Number 13, December 9, 2016 (Excerpt from a letter to Principal Swanson) Mr. Swanson, I wanted to take a moment to tell you how much I appreciated the help from 4 of your students this past weekend. These young ladies volunteered their afternoon on Saturday (12/3) at the annual Fall Leaf Haul. This is a free leaf disposal event for Salem residents and they helped unload leaves from vehicles. It's a cold, wet and dirty job but they did it with enthusiasm and smiles. A huge thank you to.... *Abigail LaVerdure *Tatianna Chess *Kayla Rasmussen *Audra Sproed Leo Gonzalez City of Salem Signs & Sweeping 503-589-2195 Come to the Decade Dance tonight, December 9th, after the basketball game and support Oly Pageant! A copy of the 2 semester master schedule will also be located on our website for students to reference as they ask for elective changes. Requests are answered in the order they are received. Schedules will not be changed to accommodate teacher or class period requests. Last day to request a semester 2 schedule th change is Thursday, January 26 . nd nd 2 semester class schedules will be available for students on the first day of 2 semester classes. These will be provided via StudentVue or can be requested in print on the first nd day of 2 semester. Students will not be allowed to skip or leave a class that is listed on their schedule and come to the College and Career center to make schedule changes in person. They must request their schedule change via the online request process. During the first week of the semester, counselors will correct scheduling errors with students in person for the following reasons only: 1. Sprague Families, This year we have created Advisory groups for every student who attends Sprague. Students have been assigned to a specific teacher who will assist them with special projects, trainings, and required surveys or lessons throughout the year. Some of these lessons are mandated by the Oregon Legislature. In July of 2015, the Oregon Legislature passed SB 856 (Sex Abuse Prevention Instruction) which requires schools to provide four lessons on sexual abuse prevention, K-12th grade. Advisory periods are 40 minutes in length and along with SB 856 instruction, will cover other state required activities or graduation requirements such as the PEP (Personal Education Plans) which is required for all students. Students will also use their Advisory time to complete Forecasting activities (choosing of next year’s schedules and classes) and completion of district required surveys and assessment. The creation of Advisory classes minimizes the disruption of regularly scheduled classes and allows for uninterrupted instructional time for English, Social Studies, Science and Math classes which were impacted in previous years. The following dates have been finalized for Advisory schedules for the 2016-17 school year: January 18th February 23rd March 8th April 13th May 18th Any parents who would like further information or have additional questions can contact Chad Barkes, Sprague Assistant Principal.
