The information is based on a survey tour conducted during October 11-13, 2015. Around 0 the Palkot three sites were selected for the collection. Two sites were selected on Gobarsilli (22 53.058N, 0 0 0 Jalil Ahmad 084 39.229E), and one site was selected on Kura Pahar (22 51.621 N, 084 38.123 E).The collection Zoological Survey of India, survey and identification yielded a total of 89 species of Lepidoptera including 30 species of Butterflies Gangetic Plains Regional Centre, under 26 genera and 59 species of Moths under 42 genera. As far as Butterflies are concerned, Sector-8, Bahadurpur Housing Nymphalidae with 64% of total reported Butterflies dominated the group whereas, in moths, Erebidae Colony, Patna-800 026, Bihar, dominated with 73% of the collected moth species. Biological Forum – An International Journal 5(2): 56-63(2013) ISSN No. (Print): 0975-1130 ISSN No. (Online): 2249-3239 Nectar resource use by Butterflies in Gir Wildlife Sanctuary, Sasan, Gujarat Meeta Sharma and Noopur Sharma Forest Protection Division, Arid Forest Research Institute, New Pali Road, Jodhpur (Rajasthan)-342005, India (Received 05 June, 2013, Accepted 15 July, 2013) ABSTRACT: Butterflies are known to be the most fascinating creatures existing on this earth and have a great aesthetic value. They are in close relation with the plant species as they procure nectar from flowering plants to meet their energy requirements while butterflies serve to be pollinators for various plant species which is the only means of their propagation. Hence in order to understand the butterfly-flower interactions, the present study was conducted in Gir Wildlife Sanctuary, Sasan, Gujarat to determine the numerous host plants associated with these beautiful butterflies. An extensive entomological survey for a period of two years in the forest area of Gir was undertaken. Out of the 50 butterfly species recorded in Gir, 27 species (54%) used nectar while other species obtained their food from non-floral resources such as mud, wet soils and cow dung. Highest number of butterflies were recorded in Lantana camara (19), followed by Asclepias syriaca (10), Tamarindus indica (6), Diospyros melanoxylon (5) and Ixora arborea (5) respectively. It also hosts a range of other mammalian, avian, reptiles and insect species biodiversity. The sanctuary area has been explored in the present study for diversity and species richness of small but important creatures called butterflies. Butterflies have been depicted as significant indicator species owing to their sensitivity to slightest change in environmental factors. Their habitat signals a healthy ecosystem. Danaidae and Nymphalidae butterflies were observed the most abundant while Hesperiidae butterflies were recorded the least dominant. Butterfly diversity has been observed higher in thinned, thinned and burnt and in wildfire (disturbed forests) in comparison to the natural dense forests. It was observed that the population of butterflies were found more in the disturbed forests as they interact the most in disturbances; hence they are the ecological indicators of climate change. KOSHTA Central Regional Station, Zoological Survey of India, Jabalpur - 482 002 INTRODUCTION The present. paper deals with the studies on butterflies of hitherto unexplored area of Sidhi district, which is situated in eastern part of Madhya Pradesh. The district is bordered in east by Mirzapur district of Uttar Pradesh. The area of Sidhi district is 10526 sq. km., of which about one-tenth area along the western slope of Kaimur Hill was surveyed. The butterflies were collected by the senior author and other team members during the f;nvironmental Impact Assessment studies of Ban Sagar Canal Construction on Faunal Components in July, 1999. The study revealed the presence of twenty seven species under twenty two genera and seven families of which two species viz. Spindasis ictis ictis (Hewitson) of family Lycaenidae and Badamia ex clam at ion is (Fabricius) of family Hesperiidae are recorded for the first time from Madhya Pradesh and all twenty seven species are reported for the first time from Sidhi district. Nectar Host Plants of Butterflies, Their Flowering Period and Flower Colour at Visakhapatnam
INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF PLANT SCIENCES RESEARCH ARTICLE I J PS Volume 9 | Issue 1 | January, 2014 | 72-78 Nectar host plants of butterflies, their flowering period and flower colour at Visakhapatnam D. SANDHYA DEEPIKA, J.B. ATLURI AND K. LAXMI SOWMYA SUMMARY This paper is intended to be a study concerning with nectar host plants of butterflies at Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh is described. At Visakhapatnam a total of 43 butterfly species spread over eight families was recorded. They are distributed among 8 families. Of the 43 species of butterflies recorded at Visakhapatnam, 5 species Elymnias caudata, Mycalesis visala subdita, Melanitis leda ismene, Euthalia garuda, and Neptis hylas seldom foraged on the nectars of flowers. They are found to feed on over ripe or rotten fruits, sap oozing from wounds and tree trunks. Among the remaining species Papilio polymnestor, P. poltyes polytes, Princeps demoleus were seen to feed on mud in addition to foraging on different flowers and three species, Euthalia nais, Papilio crino, Colotis danae could not found to feed on any flower during the study period. The remaining 35 species were found taking nectar at the flowers of one or the other 54 plant species. The mutualisitic relationship between plants and insects is widely explained. Plants have evolved floral structures for the production of nectar which is collected by insects that in the process pollinate the flowers. Present study shows that butterfly diversity of Jhargram district for first time by providing annotate checklist of butterflies with scientific name. Study represents a total number of 132 butterfly species including 84 genera and 6 families. Out of these 6 families Lycaenidae is the most dominant including 42 species and 31 genus, followed by Nymphalidae comprising 38 species and 20 genus, Hesperidae consisting 19 species and 16 genus, Pieridae containing 18 species and 12 genus, Papilionidae 13 species and 4 genus, and Riodinidae with 2 species and single genus. During our exhaustive surveys we conclude that Grass Jewel (Chilades trochylus) and Blue Mormon (Papilio polymnester) is the smallest and largest butterfly respectively in Jhargram. All taxonomical data were collected by Pollard Walk (transect) method with regular intervals for 3 years by group surveys at different selected location of Jhargram district. -
