  • The Rhaeto-Romance Languages
Romance Linguistics Editorial Statement Routledge publish the Romance Linguistics series under the editorship of Martin Harris (University of Essex) and Nigel Vincent (University of Manchester). Romance Philogy and General Linguistics have followed sometimes converging sometimes diverging paths over the last century and a half. With the present series we wish to recognise and promote the mutual interaction of the two disciplines. The focus is deliberately wide, seeking to encompass not only work in the phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, and lexis of the Romance languages, but also studies in the history of Romance linguistics and linguistic thought in the Romance cultural area. Some of the volumes will be devoted to particular aspects of individual languages, some will be comparative in nature; some will adopt a synchronic and some a diachronic slant; some will concentrate on linguistic structures, and some will investigate the sociocultural dimensions of language and language use in the Romance-speaking territories. Yet all will endorse the view that a General Linguistics that ignores the always rich and often unique data of Romance is as impoverished as a Romance Philogy that turns its back on the insights of linguistics theory. Other books in the Romance Linguistics series include: Structures and Transformations Christopher J. Pountain Studies in the Romance Verb eds Nigel Vincent and Martin Harris Weakening Processes in the History of Spanish Consonants Raymond Harris-N orthall Spanish Word Formation M.F. Accepted 16 November, 2011 A research on exploration, collecting and safeguarding plant genetic resources in Italian linguistic islands by Institute of Plant Genetics of the National Research Council of Bari (Italy) and the Institute of Crop Science of Kassel University (Germany) started in 1996. In 2010 two other linguistic areas (Occitan and Ladin) were visited with the same aim. In addition, west Liguria was covered to complete a previous exploration in that region. In all 99 accessions belonging to 51 taxa were sampled from 29 collecting sites. Rare crops for Italy were found for example Citron melon [Citrullus lanatus (Thunb.) Matsum. et Nakai subsp. lanatus var. citroides (Bailey) Mansf. ex Greb.], old landraces of root chicory (Cichorium intybus L.), Artemisia umbelliformis Lam. cultivated, ancient populations of rye selected for straw, rutabaga [Brassica napus L. var. napobrassica (L.) Rchb.], 'bleu potatoes' (Solanum sp.), etc. In conclusion the Occitan and Ladin linguistic islands still conserve worthy crop genetic resources but similar to other Italian regions inhabited by ethnic minorities, the traditional customs and language are losing importance.

IT IS CERTAINLY nothing more than a pious legend, but the story goes that, when the painter Tiziano Ve- cellio (Titian) died in Venice in 1576, he was holding this painting depicting Mary Magdalen, known as the Repentant Mary Magdalen, which today be- longs to the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg. That this was a work for which he had a special affection is proved by the fact that Titian kept it in his possession until the end of his life. Only after- wards, in 1581, was it sold by his son, Pomponio, to the Venetian noble Cristoforo Barbarigo, whose collection remained undivided at the family’s town palace until 1850, when it was bought in its entirety © The State Hermitage Museum, / Vladimir 2019 Terebenin by the Russian museum, including four other works by the great master. Considered to be his most successful represen- tation of Mary Magdalen – a faithful follower of Christ, referred to in the four gospels as the first witness of the Resurrection, and transformed, in some of the Apocryphal Testaments, into a repen- tant sinner – this painting forms part of a large group of pieces dedicated to a theme that was parti- cularly beloved by the artist. Titian is known to have painted many other versions throughout his career for the most demanding and exclusive collectors of his time, beginning with the one dating from 1531, commissioned by the fifth Marquis and first Duke Ticiano Vecellio of Mantua, Federico Gonzaga, and including those (Pieve di Cadore, c. 1488 - Venice, 1576) sent to Philip II of Spain (1561) – and to aristocrats Repentant Mary Magdalen from the Spanish court, his close friends, such as c.

  • Hydroelectric Plants and Dams As Industrial Heritage in the Context of Nature-Culture Interrelation: an Overview of Examples in Turkey
energies Article Hydroelectric Plants and Dams as Industrial Heritage in the Context of Nature-Culture Interrelation: An Overview of Examples in Turkey Nurdan Kuban Department of Architecture, Kocaeli University, Izmit˙ 41300, Kocaeli, Turkey; [email protected] Abstract: The article investigates nature–culture interrelation over the case studies of hydroelectric plants of the 20th century. In many cases, construction of these structures has evidently resulted in irreversible changes in natural and cultural environments. However, they have also supplied energy for the industrialization of civilizations. After approximately 100 years of existence, it is crucial to determine the future of these hydroelectric facilities, which are artifacts of industrial heritage approaching the end of their productive life spans.
