Women in Aviation Vesna Vulovic, flight attendant who survived the highest ever fall (33,000 ft) from a plane and survived has died at age 66. Vesna was working as a flight attendant on a Yugoslav Airlines DC-9 aircraft when a suspected bomb brought the plane down from 33,000 ft (10,000m) in Czechoslovakia on 26 January 1972. All of the other 27 passengers and crew on board died. According to investigators, Vesna was trapped by a food cart in the plane’s tail when the bomb exploded. She plummeted back to earth in the tail in sub-zero temperatures, where she landed on a steep, snow-covered slope near a village, which is believed to have softened her fall. She was found by woodsman Bruno Honke, who heard her screaming in the dark as the rest of the plane came crashing to the ground.

    Here is a brief summary of the aircraft in the Western Canada Aviation Museum Collection. CAAA artists may choose one or more as subjects for the conference exhibition. Please let the President know which aircraft you are planning to paint. Photos of the aircraft are available on the WCAM website and I have found several on photo sharing sites as well. Hint: try a google image search for your subject along with 'WCAM' and/or 'Winnipeg'. (from the WCAM Tour Guide Manual) WCAM - Air Craft on Display CF-AAM Fokker Super Universal The aircraft on exhibit, CF-AAM was reconstructed using the parts of four wrecked airplanes, by Clark Seaborn and his team of dedicated friends. After a 17-year road to restoration, the Fokker first flew July 24, 1998, but it took another year of proving and paperwork to gain a coveted certificate of airworthiness. The aircraft had an eight-year tour on the vintage aircraft circuit, making appearances all over North America, covering over 35,000 miles before coming 'home' to rest at the Museum in 2005. In its heyday, this aircraft was a luxurious transport - the comfortable mohair upholstered seats, mahogany cabin paneling, sliding glass windows for fresh air - especially when compared with sled dog transportation. The pilot's accommodation, featuring an enclosed cockpit, was truly a remarkable enhancement for its time. Clark Seaborn recalls: "The artifacts of four airplanes arrived at my Calgary home on a flatbed trailer in July 1982, and with the help of basic drawings, we commenced work on the fuselage structure. Several of my friends were possessed of the same dream and assisted tirelessly on the restoration." Because the artifacts were so ravaged, the team scoured the world for further construction and finishing details.

    Extract from Vancouver Daily Province, Canada lost one of her greatest flyers in the death of Andrew David Cruickshank. Known as “ Andy ” wherever airmen gather, he came to Canada after the Great War, during which he served with distinction in the Royal Air Force. He joined the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and spent five years in the Yukon, on the trails and in the camps. Married in 1927, his honeymoon was spent in a canoe trip through Northern British Columbia with Mrs. Cruickshank, a South African girl, who was the first white woman ever to see the treacherous peaks and waterfalls of the country known as “ The Pincushion.” In 1924, he resigned from the R.C.M.P. as the call of the air drew him back to flying. Returning to Alaska he did splendid work for himself, later joining the Alaska-Yukon Airways, and crossed and recrossed the treacherous mountain peaks jutting above the Alaskan coast and studding the inland ranges. He joined Canadian Airways five years ago and was stationed at Vancouver on fisheries patrol for two seasons before going on the air mail service on the prairies. It was Andy Cruickshank and his engineer, Alf Walker, also of Vancouver, who bore the final brunt of the MacAlpine search. At the happy ending, when Col. H. MacAlpine and his party were found safe in the Northern barrens, their machine was the only one still operating. It had done more than 7,000 miles of Arctic flying in a few weeks. Day after day and night after night Cruickshank and Walker fought with death as they guided their plane over the trackless wastes of the Arctic peering through glaring sun and blinding snow for a sign of the lost explorers.
