Diolch am fod yn gefn. iv Abstract The desire to recognise the richness, humanity, and cross fertilisation of cultures and identities that built today’s America is the starting point for Braids of Song. Its overarching concerns trace the interrelation between immigration, identity and creativity within a Welsh Trans-Atlantic context. Braids of Song is a mixed-genre collection of stories that acknowledges the preciousness of culture; in particular, the music, which is both able to cross different linguistic boundaries and to breach those between melody and language itself. The stories are shared through four intertwined narrative strands in a mixture of literary styles, ranging from creative non-fiction essays and poems to dramatic monologues. -

She's an inspiration to millions, and her new book released this month, Say a Little Prayer, encourages kids to find their best talent in life and embrace it. Dionne Warwick A LIFETIME OF ACHIEVEMENT Scintillating, soothing and sensual best describe the familiar and legendary voice of five- time Grammy Award winning music legend, Dionne Warwick, who has become a cornerstone of American pop music and culture. Warwick’s career, which currently celebrates over 50 years, has established her as an international music icon and concert act. Over that time, she has earned 75 charted hit songs and sold over 100 million records. She began singing professionally in 1961 after being discovered by a young songwriting team, Burt Bacharach and Hal David. She had her first hit in 1962 with “Don’t Make Me Over.” Less than a decade later, she had released more than 18 consecutive Top 100 singles, including her classic Bacharach/David recordings, “Walk on By,” “Anyone Who Had a Heart,” “Message to Michael,” "Promises, Promises,” “A House is Not a Home,” “Alfie,” “Say a Little Prayer,” “This Girl’s in Love With You,” “I’ll Never Fall in Love Again,” “Reach Out For Me,” and the theme from “Valley of the Dolls. ”Together, Warwick and her songwriting team of Burt Bacharach & Hal David, accumulated more than 30 hit singles, and close to 20 best-selling albums, during their first decade together. Cecil L. Murray stood before his agitated congregants at First African Methodist Episcopal (FAME) Church in Los Angeles and urged them to let their minds settle—to become aware of the “purifying presence” of the Holy Spirit in their midst. “Balcony, can you feel it?” he asked. “Can you feel it in the nave? Can you feel it in the alcove? Can you feel it in the plaza? Can you feel it in the choir?” Rather than decrying terrorism from abroad or the thump of war drums at home, Pastor Murray’s focus was on bringing spiritual clarity to the lived experience of his flock. -

Autobiographies by Americans of Color 1995-2000: An Annotated Bibliography Abstract This second of two volumes bringing together as comprehensively as possible, all autobiographical works by Americans of Color covers the years 1995-2000. In this five year period there are nearly 200 more publications than in the previous volume (1980-1994), which spanned fifteen ears.y 435 of the 674 entries in this volume are by African Americans. The stories of leaving the south and participation in the Civil Rights Movement, which were present in the first olume,v are joined by those of musicians, entertainers, entrepreneurs, and athletes, teachers, sharecroppers, politicians, and veterans.
