The main objective of this course will be to investigate how and why sf (science fiction) functions in the ways that it does. How is sf defined (and who is doing the defining)? How has our understanding of sf changed over time? How does sf work in different medium forms? How does it reflect on contemporary social issues? What purpose does science fiction serve in our lives? In particular, we will center on three subgenres of science fiction, aliens, robots, and time travel, to examine how and why science fiction creators and science fiction fans keep returning to these ideas. This course will also push students to hone their skills regarding critical analysis and essay composition. Course Goals and Learning Outcomes By the end of the course, students will have been introduced and be expected to successfully demonstrate some of the following skills: • To critically investigate and discuss major examples of science fiction literature and other works • To appreciate and apply some critical and theoretical approaches of science fiction to sf-based texts • To understand and communicate some of the history behind science fiction as a genre and form • To recognize how sf presents itself in different media, and how it contains its own subgenres and influences • To propose and carry out a critical investigation of a well-ordered argument concerning a given research topic regarding sf literature Required Texts • Vision: The Complete Series. Note all assignments are due by 5:00 pm on the Friday of the week that they are due; anything submitted after that class will count as late. Participation and Attendance. Students will receive a portion of this mark for being present in class, and a portion for active and helpful participation. Grading for the participation portion will be done considering the following: 90-100 Excellent: With few, if any, exceptions, the student is making frequent, substantive, useful and original contributions to class discussions; the student consistently engaged and participating, and attends all peer review sessions and classes 80-89 Good: the student is a regular contributor to discussions; the student is consistently engaged, and attends all peer review sessions 70-79 Satisfactory: The student demonstrates occasional contributions and inconsistent engagement 60-69 Marginal: Minimal contributions and/or significant lack of engagement < 60 Failure: repeated disruptive, inappropriate or unethical behaviour; behaviour disrespectful to others; consistent lack of commitment and/or effort Response Papers Three times throughout the term, students must turn in a brief (2 pages) response paper. The paper will contain their response to one of the works discussed (or to be discussed) in class. If the work has already been discussed in class, the student is expected to focus on a different aspect of the work that hasn’t been discussed, or expand on the previous discussion in a meaningful way. (The second and third paper will have further qualifications.) The papers will be marked in terms of how well the students display knowledge of the text, apply what’s been discussed in class, demonstrate original thinking, present a coherent argument, and adhere to conventions in terms of punctuation and mechanics. First Essay This essay will ask students to expand aliens or robots as a science fiction trope, drawing on the works and material discussed thus far. Final Essay This essay is the student’s chance to demonstrate what has been learned over the course of the class. Creative projects and collaborations will be encouraged. Students will receive a detailed description of this assignment along with possible essay topics well in advance of the due date. Final Exam Questions will be designed to test your knowledge of the readings, and concepts discussed in class. The exam will involve identifying passages, delivering

    A Very Short History of Cyberpunk Marcus Janni Pivato Many people seem to think that William Gibson invented The cyberpunk genre in 1984, but in fact the cyberpunk aesthetic was alive well before Neuromancer (1984). For example, in my opinion, Ridley Scott's 1982 movie, Blade Runner, captures the quintessence of the cyberpunk aesthetic: a juxtaposition of high technology with social decay as a troubling allegory of the relationship between humanity and machines ---in particular, artificially intelligent machines. I believe the aesthetic of the movie originates from Scott's own vision, because I didn't really find it in the Philip K. Dick's novel, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep (1968), upon which the movie is (very loosely) based. Neuromancer made a big splash not because it was the "first" cyberpunk novel, but rather, because it perfectly captured the Zeitgeist of anxiety and wonder that prevailed at the dawning of the present era of globalized economics, digital telecommunications, and exponential technological progress --things which we now take for granted but which, in the early 1980s were still new and frightening. For example, Gibson's novels exhibit a fascination with the "Japanification" of Western culture --then a major concern, but now a forgotten and laughable anxiety. This is also visible in the futuristic Los Angeles of Scott’s Blade Runner. Another early cyberpunk author is K.W. Jeter, whose imaginative and disturbing novels Dr. Adder (1984) and The Glass Hammer (1985) exemplify the dark underside of the genre. Some people also identify Rudy Rucker and Bruce Sterling as progenitors of cyberpunk.

    The Cyborg Prophecy: Reading Between Isaac Asimov's Lines

    The Cyborg Prophecy: Reading between Isaac Asimov’s Lines Rudrani Gangopadhyay Jadavpur University, Kolkata Abstract: Donna Haraway’s “Cyborg Manifesto” describes the Cyborg as a conjunction of technology and discourse. It argues that a prosthesis becomes a cyborg element when it is integrated with the identity of an individual, and a cyborg is created by the almost symbiotic union of robotic and organic elements. Isaac Asimov, in his short story “The Bicentennial Man” for example, narrates the story of such a remarkable union of robotic and human parts and asserts, at the end, that the resultant system is, essentially, human. A cyborg, therefore, is ‘meta-human’, being somewhat enhanced (by the use of technology) in certain ways in comparison to a human being. There isa mass cyborgization of the global population taking place today. The kind of blurring of boundaries between exogenous and endogenous parts within the system of a human being that one had, so far, only come across in science fiction, is fast coming to life. The obvious example of prosthetics aside, gadgets like cellphone headsets, touchscreen phones and similar electronic devices have been rendered extensions of the human system, merging seamlessly with the organic identities and consequently, making cyborgs out of everyone. The relevance of literature featuring cyborgs, which have, in a way, acted as prophecies for human civilization, therefore cannot be emphasized enough. This paper explores the cyborg identity in select works of Isaac Asimov and reflect on the fast occurring cyborgization of the (meta-)human race in reality. Any exception to this requirement must be approved by the Head of Upper School. The School recognizes and supports accommodations for students with documented learning disabilities.     EDITORIAL Sheila Williams LUCIUS SHEPARD, HE WAS A FRIEND OF MINE “Not Long after the Christlight of the world’s first morning faded, when birds still flew to heaven and back, and even the wickedest things shone like saints, so pure was their portion of evil, there was a village by the name of Hangtown that clung to the back of the dragon Griaule.” These are the evocative opening words to Lucius Shepard’s “The Scalehunter’s Beautiful Daughter,” a novella that won the 1988 Lo- cus Poll and came in second in our own Readers’ Award poll. In all the years that I’ve worked at Asimov’s, this is, perhaps, the loveliest beginning to a story I’ve ever en- countered. My own friendship with Lucius began about thirty years ago when we published “A Traveler’s Tale” in our July 1984 issue. I first met him in our office in the spring of 1984. He was moving to New York from Florida, and for a while I got to see him in person fairly often. After a couple of sublets in Manhattan, he moved to Staten Island and visits became rare. But, like many of his friendships, our relationship continued to grow and deepen over the telephone. In those days before Amazon, he was a bit iso- lated in that outer borough, so calls would come in asking for favors—can you mail me a ream of computer paper? How about a copy of the I Ching? I need its advice for a story I’m working on.

    For Immediate Release May 27, 2020 For More Information Kevin Lampe (312) 617-7280 [email protected] Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America’s 2020 Nebula Award Finalists THREE DAYS OF ONLINE VIDEO PANELS WITH REAL-TIME INTERACTION MAY 29 – 31 SFWA’s 2020 Nebula Awards will be one of the highlights of the SFWA Nebula Conference. This year's conference is transforming into an entirely virtual conference. It will be presented live and in interactive form from May 29th-31st. The innovative program will convey the essence of the in-person Nebula Conference, albeit in an all-online format due to the COVID-19 pandemic. “The Nebula Awards Ceremony will be seen live online by people around the globe,” said Mary Robinette Kowal, SFWA President. “While the circumstances are difficult, we’re excited that the conference is more accessible than when in a physical location.” As part of the celebration of the Nebula Award winners, SFWA has partnered with audio-first entertainment studio Podium Audio to adapt, produce and distribute its 55th Nebula Awards Showcase Anthology, edited by Cat Valente, in audio format. A top publisher of science-fiction and fantasy audiobooks, Podium Audio is on the forefront of discovering new authors and voice artists from the U.S. and around the world. “Since the first publication of the Nebula Anthology in 1966, the yearly collection has only been available in print. Expanding into the world of audiobooks offers new opportunities for expression and outreach,” says Kowal. “We’re delighted to partner with the innovative and experienced team at Podium Audio.” There are multiple writing categories and their respective finalists for the 2020 Nebula Awards listed below and, of course, the Nebula Awards ceremony itself will stream live at 8 pm Eastern on May 30th.
