-- Taylor Yocum and William Sweet have disgraced their family and turned out to be professional sheep herders

MARRIED - Hiram Henry Stewart and Miss Jennie Kellogg were married at the court house, Monday, May 2d, Justice W. J. Robbins officiating. The contracting parties are well known young people of Easton. The entire court house force witnessed the impressive marriage ceremony, and it is confidentially whispered that some of the bachelor officials were taking notes, which should be positively forbidden. The Ellensburg Dawn, May 6, 1898

Our old friend, D. F. Dau has concluded to travel in double harness henceforth with Miss Jennie Watts as mate. Judge Graves tied the knot. We wish them success and a smooth road to travel.

Allen Douglas Goodwin

I was born in Ellensburg, Washington and I was raised mostly in Eastern Washington; six months in California. My brother and I were raised by a single Dad, and we moved around a lot from one construction town to another. I went to 14 different schools in 12 years before graduating from Puyallup High School. Then I went to WSU in Pullman. I've always been interested in family lore; I've been actively "doing" family history research about 28 years. I rejoined YVGS in January 2015. I had been a member of YVGS for a couple of years in the 1990s. Although I dropped my membership then, I kept up with Yakima news up by reading YVGS Exchange Bulletins. In 1987, the Washington State Genealogical Society offered a Pioneer Certificate for each ancestor who arrived in Washington Territory before statehood in 1889. But you had to prove it. Okay, that was a challenge, but first I had to learn how to research and record it on forms like a genealogist does. So I did that too, and then to my own great surprise came up with a dozen Pioneer Certificates. I've been hooked on genealogy ever since. It's hard to choose just one of my ancestors who would be the most interesting--let's say Orsamus Holmes (1757-1835). In 1775, he enlisted at age 17 in the Continental army at Pittsfield, . He was in a number of Revolutionary War engagements, including General Montgomery's invasion of Canada, Ticonderoga, and Mount Defiance. By 1777, he was serving with the Green Mountain Boys. He was captured at Bellows Bay and held on a British prison ship near Quebec. He whiled away the hours by singing patriotic songs non-stop at the top of his lungs, then with a few companions escaped in the prison ship's small boat. They spent 17 days on the run before being recaptured by Indians. Back to Canada and prison at (where he resumed his singing). In 1778, again with a couple of companions, broke out of prison, overpowered the guards, scaled the city walls, crossed the St. Lawrence River, and went on the run again. This time they made it to the American settlements at Monckton, Vermont. He was tough, determined, and in-your-face. The British could lock him up, but they couldn't shut him up, nor were they able to keep him locked up very long. I just love this irreverent young man with an attitude. the most satisfying part of doing my family history research is The Hunt-- once curiosity is piqued it becomes almost insatiable, and you're compelled to hunt until you find answers to questions like who and what and when. Then you begin to ask questions like where and how and why. Which takes you into history in order to make sense of what you've found and a context for understanding what it means.

17 STORIES BURIED BENEATH THE STONES A Tribute To Our Unsung Pioneers (Concept Borrowed from The Genealogical Society of Central Missouri; GSCM Reporter)

Harriet Dorina Hattin Hadley

William Shannon Hattin , with his wife Sarah ( Johnson ) and two small sons crossed the plains from Iowa in 1852, settling first in Vancouver, Clark County, Washington Territory. Harriett Hattin was born there on October 17, 1858. She was William and Sarah's fifth child and second daughter.* William was a carpenter by trade and he helped to build the first hotel and the first courthouse in Vancouver. About 1866, William relocated his family to the Ahtanum where he had decided to homestead and try his hand raising cattle. The first winter the family spent on the Ahtanum, Hattie (as she was called) and her sister Nancy "slept outside in the bed of the old emigrant wagon, raised on four posts." Eventually William built a very comfortable log cabin and christened the homestead "Hattin's Gardens". The family clothes were made by hand and they raised their own food. Once a year a trip was made to The Dalles for supplies. The children often dug the roots of the wild sunflowers and used them for chewing gum.

About 1872, at the age of 14, Hattie, married Bayliss Beauford Thorpe , age 23, the son of Fielding Mortimore Thorpe one of the first settlers in the Yakima Valley. Bayliss was employed as a foreman by his father who owned a cattle ranch in the Moxee area. In the summer the cattle ranged in the Kittitas Valley and in the winter they were moved to the Columbia, where there was less snow and better winter grazing. Hattie accompanied her husband in moving the cattle and often worked as one of the hands.

About 1874 while working the range in the Palouse country, the family became acquainted with Kamiakin. The Indians were burning hay and driving off stock. Bayliss asked Kamiakin for help controlling the renegades. Help was granted and Bayliss and Hattie were able to continue ranching.

Bayliss died December 27, 1887 on the Naches River, in Yakima County, Washington.

Hattie married Melvin Hadley in 1891 and left the Yakima Valley for Lincoln County, Washington. Twenty five years later she returned, settling in the Toppenish area where she ran a dairy farm. Harriett D. Hadley died 14 March 1940 in Toppenish, Yakima County, Washington.

Children of Hattie Hattin Thorpe Hadley :

Edward Shannon Thorpe was born April 28, 1874 and died July 9, 1898 in the Klondike, Yukon Territory. A month before he was born, Bayliss and Hattie were in the Palouse county. Snow was deep in places when the couple set out for Waitsburg. The trip took three days on horseback. The first night they stayed in a batchelor's shack. The next day, they pushed hard and made 90 miles, staying that night with a rancher and his wife. They arrived at their destination on the third day. After his birth, when Shannon and Hattie were well enough to return home, Bayliss arrived with an old stage coach and the family made the return trip in style.

18 Laura Anna Thorpe was born February 14, 1876 in Union Gap, Washington and died August 31, 1952. Laura married Henry Marshell Hadley and had several children: Alice Frances, Melvina Amelia [Dolly], Margaret Louisa, Elsie Emeline, Ethel Dorinda, Warren Henry, Samuel Bedford and Laura Adeline. 13 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren survived her.

Willis Chester Thorpe was born July 14, 1878 in Yakima County, Washington Territory and died January 11, 1964 in Gresham, Multnomah County, Oregon. When Willis was born the fear of Indian attacks was so strong that men stood guard outside the cabin. Willis married Lillian Viressie (Ressie) McCord on August 13, 1907 in Davenport, Washington. They had at least two children: Calvin Shannon and Echo Dellis. In 1920-1921 Willis traveled to Mexico where he looked into the possible purchase of land.

Warren E. Thorpe was born August 14, 1880 in the Wenas area of Yakima County and died June 10, 1949 in Seattle, Washington. He was married to Mary Fossie Ennis on December 23, 1906 in Benton County, Washington. They had four sons: Bayless E., Clarence E., Eugene W. and Milford R.

Alvia Francis Thorpe was born December 12, 1882, also in the Wenas area of Yakima County and died December 29, 1974 in Yakima, Washington. He was married to Josephine Mildred Moore in February 7, 1905 in Davenport, Washington and they had four children: Chester Clair, Orville A., Gerald Nelson. and Raymond Henry. At his death he was survived by 10 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.

Viola Ollie [Vivian] Thorpe was born October 12, 1884 in Ellensburg, Washington and died October 20, 1970 in Toppenish, Washington. She first married Edward W. Kitt on October 31, 1901 in Lincoln County, Washington. Then she married Robert McClarey on January 1, 1916 in Yakima County. She had no children.

*Children of William and Sarah ( Johnson ) Hattin were Jonah (born about 1849 in Iowa), William B. (born about 1852 in Iowa), Nancy C. (born about 1854 in Washington Territory), Alonzo E. The Deerfield Raid, 1704 (the Westward Movement) Susan J. Boatright - October 21, 2015

Thoughts on the Westward Movement At first I thought to track the movements of my grandparents and great grandparents to the state of Washington. I would include stops along the way from the East Coast, marking the generations as they did their classic journeys that are well-documented in the history of this country. to Ohio, Virginia to North Carolina, then Tennessee, , Missouri and Arkansas and ev en Oklahoma. A pause…then a giant step by Oregon Trail or by train to the West Coast. I envision transparent overlays of the U. S. with journey lines in various family colors showing stops along the way as families of Breshears and Rashes , Corums and Alcotts and Griswolds , Mayhoods and Kelsos , Blankinships and Crawfords arrived here in what would become Washington State. They left generations of families in their distant graveyards, some still preserved in census and land records and in county histories and legends. This is, I believe, still a noble endeavor that deserves my attention to completion. However, I’m beginning to realize that the westward movement I learned of in history class is only the culmination of a much earlier and longer-distanced movement in my families that continued out of Europe, from the Alps of Switzerland to the German Palatine, down the toll-demanding passages of the Rhine River to Rotterdam; out of other ports of Le Havre, Southampton and Bristol, Belfast and Derry and the Leith of Edinburgh. Then there was the months-long endurance sail across the Atlantic to such places as Plymouth, Philadelphia, Jamestown, New Amsterdam. All my families’ immigrants were in place in their new western world by 1772. I’ve at this time fou nd no one arriving after the American Revolution. Recent searching into my Griswold/Hough lines has revealed the Catlin family--11 generations back. (My 8 X great grandparents). I’ve spent a lot of time and thought on this well-documented family, their history, their ordeal and their outcome. John Catlin , Jr. was born in 1643 in Wethersfield, Hartford County, Connecticut. His wife, Mary Baldwin was born in 1643 in Milford, New Haven, Connecticut. They were married 23 September 1662 in Wethersfield, Hartford County, Connecticut and would have nine children. They were both descended from Great Migration parents (about 1620-1640) from England (John Catlin /Isabelle Ward and Joseph Baldwin /Hannah Whitlock ). John has a commemorative marker tablet that was erected in 1911 at the corner of Broad and Commerce Streets in Newark, New Jersey, an important recognition 207 years after his death. “On this site John Catlin , Newark’s first schoolmaster opened his school in 1676, holding it in his home as was the custom in those days. By vote of the town’s men he was engaged to “Do his faithful, honest and true endeavor to teach the children or servants of those as have subscribed…English and also arethmetick…as much as they are capable to learn and he capable to teach them. He was a man of mark in the community, serving as town’s attorney and later as town’s man. In 1683 he became one of the early permanent settlers of Deerfield, Massachusetts, where his services gained for him the honorable 20 title of “Mr.” He was killed Feb. 29, 1704 in the defense of his home against an attack of French and Indians. He was a guide of youth and a leader of men.” Erected by the Newark Schoolmen’s Club, Newark Day, November 6, 1911. He moved briefly to Hartford, Connecticut and by 1684 was one of the settlers of Deerfield, Massachusetts. In 1704, Deerfield, Massachusetts was the northwestern most outpost of New England during the late 17th and early 18th centuries. Deerfield was first settled by English colonists in 1673 and was incorporated in 1677. These settlers had moved west as far as reasonable safety would allow —or so they believed. The raid on Deerfield occurred on February 29, 1704 during the Queen Anne’s War, (did you note the leap-year date?) when French and Native American forces under the command of Jean-Baptiste Hertel de Rouville attacked the English settlement, just before dawn, burning part of the town. The French and Native troops numbered nearly 300. The raiders destroyed 17 of the village’s 41 homes and looted others. The house of Thomas French , John Catlin’s son-in- law, was not burned, so the town records were saved and thus an accurate accounting of this event and its participants has survived to become a standard in our country’s history. 44 residents were killed: 10 men, 9 women and 25 children and 5 soldiers and 7 men from a neighboring town. About 140 escaped, many of them barefoot in the snow. The French expedition had lost probably 11 men killed and 22 wounded. The settlement was considered a threat to French interests and an infringement of Native territories (understandably so). 109 villagers were taken captive —40% of the village population. These captives were forced to begin a 300-some mile march in midwinter snows of February to Quebec, Canada, a trek that would last for two months, where they were then held for ransom or as servants or were assimilated into the French or Indian cultures. Only 89 of these captives survived the ordeal. 20 did not. Most of those who died of exposure or who were slain en-route were women and children. According to records, no family suffered more than that of John Catlin and the families of his two daughters, the Frenches and the Corses . John was killed at age 60 on site as well as two of his sons, Joseph, 23 and Jonathan, 42. Mary, his wife, age about 60, was left behind while son John, age 17 and daughter Ruth, age 20 and their two married daughters’ families were marched away with her grandchildren on location at the time. Daughter Elizabeth Catlin Corse , age 34 was killed en-route but her children survived. Her daughter, Elizabeth Corse , age 8 at the time remained in Canada as Marie Elisabeth, became a convert to Catholicism, married, had children and lived her life as a French subject. Daughter Mary Catlin French , age 40 and her husband Thomas, age 47 and their family were marched to Canada. Mary was killed en-route and their daughter Mary 18, son Thomas, 17 and husband Thomas were ransomed in 1706. Their daughter Abigail French , age 7, remained with an Indian family. Freedom French , age 12 remained in Canada as Marie Francoise. Martha French , age 9 remained as Marguerite and married a Frenchman. John French , 1 month old, had been killed in the village attack. Much has been written about the Deerfield Raid, some as poetry, some as biography. Many records exist and are freely available on line. John Catlin and Mary Baldwin’s two children, 21 year old Ruth and son John, 17 were ransomed from Canada in 1706 and 1707. According to tradition, when Ruth got tired of carrying a load she would throw it back as far as 21 possible. Her brother feared that the Indians might kill her for that, but they laughed and went back for it. They acted as though she were a great lady and apparently gave her food, which she guarded. When the others were hungry, she had plenty which she shared with her brother. She must have been a young lady of great charm. Her brother was returned to his community in 1706. Ruth was returned the following year to find that her mother, who had been left behind, had died shortly after the attack. So why was the mother left behind when others were marched away in captivity? Speculation leads to the belief that she had offered water to a wounded French soldier, possibly the brother of the French commander, de Rouville. Perhaps they thought to do her a favor, but Mary died of grief within a short time. And no wonder. 60 year old Mary Baldwin Catlin had lost her husband, 7 children and 8 grandchildren in one day’s event and it was understandably too much to bear. (Fortunately, our 7th great grandparents, Sarah Catlin Mitchell’s family as well as other family members survived this raid or were not on site at the time.) So what was the “final” outcome of the Deerfield Massacre? Who won…who lost? All lost, of course, for the war was to continue. More lives were lost and tragically traumatized on all sides. The raid failed to accomplish one of the French objectives: to instill fear in the English colonists. They instead became angry and calls went out from governors of the northern colonies for action against the French. The frontier around Deerfield was fortified by upwards of 2,000 men and the bounty for Indian scalps more than doubled. Raids were led into present day , New Brunswick and Maine with an aim to take French prisoners to be used in exchange for the Deerfield captives. Within a year, most of the captives were in French hands. The French and Indians also engaged in efforts to convert their captives to Roman Catholicism with modest success. Some of the younger captives soon lost much of their English language and were not ransomed and were adopted into various tribes. This was not an uncommon practice. More than a few families had lost their children not “only” through death, but also through adoption and assimilation. John Catlin and Mary Baldwin Catlin would have 45 great grandchildren born in Canada. Although more than a few of these children did not survive childhood, the surviving would be raised as French Catholics. Their families had been only 2 generations removed from leaving a Catholic England to become “Puritans”. What sorrows this unexpected outcome must have caused the survivors back in Deerfield. Most of the captives eventually came back to New England, but their relationship with their former masters in Canada didn’t necessarily end. There was visiting and staying in touch, especially with those who still had relatives in Canada. (Thomas French last visited his sisters in Canada in 1730.) Fighting continued until the war’s end in 1713, nine years later. Peace lasted only for 3 decades when combat resumed with King George’s War. The French threat to the frontier remained until the British conquered Canada during the French and Indian War. Such was the struggle for this venue of the Westward Movement which then, of course, continued westward. The historical marker for the Old Deerfield Burying Ground on Old Albany Road, Deerfield, Franklin County, Massachusetts, has the names of 20 families whose members are in a mass grave. Each of these families has a tragic story to tell, of loss and survival. 3 of the names are Corse , French , and Catlin .
