14 Cool Things About Indianola Fact Sheet 1. Indianola’s population is 14,932. That’s nearly 14 percent more people than 13 years ago. Indianola’s population is the same size as River Falls, Wisconsin, Hereford, Texas and Riverdale, Georgia. 2. The median age here is 34 years old (source: 2010 U.S. Census Bureau). 3. 95.5 percent of us have a high school degree or some form of higher education (source: 2010 U.S. Census Bureau). 4. Our school district has about 3,500 students. Indianola’s graduation rate is 98 percent. 5. The National Balloon Classic brings nearly 75,000 visitors to Indianola each year. 6. The Des Moines Metro Opera draws a crowd of more than 36,000 attendees to Indianola each year. 7. Indianola’s Bike Night attracts about 10,000 people to our city’s Square one Friday night each month. 8. In 2014, U.S. News and World Report ranked Indianola High School among the top 20 in Iowa as part of its “Best High Schools in America” feature. 9. Second only to Santa Fe Opera in New Mexico, the Des Moines Metro Opera, based in Indianola, has by percentage, the largest number of out-of-town ticket buyers of any other opera company in the country (Source: OPERA America). 10. 91% of our citizens say they enjoy living in Indianola. 11. The National Balloon Museum in Indianola chronicles more than 200 years of ballooning history. 12. Former Major League Baseball player, Casey Blake, is an Indianola native and now lives here full time with his family. Blake played MLB baseball for several teams including the Minnesota Twins, Cleveland Indians and most recently the Los Angeles Dodgers before his retirement in 2012. 13. This year, the Des Moines Metro Opera had visitors from 37 states, three foreign countries and 66 counties come to Indianola for a performance. 14. Indians Announce '16 Player-Development
Indians announce '16 player-development staff By Jordan Bastian / MLB.com | @MLBastian | January 11th, 2016 CLEVELAND -- John McDonald spent the better part of two decades putting dazzling defense on display on the big league stage. The Indians announced Monday that the former shortstop will now be charged with helping mold the developing infielders within their farm system. McDonald, who served as a special assistant to player development last year for Cleveland, will take over as the Tribe's Minor League infield coordinator this year. According to a release by the ballclub, the 41-year-old McDonald will be "the primary resource to Minor League coaches in the implementing and monitoring of individual infielder player plans." The Indians selected McDonald in the 12th round of the 1996 Draft, and he turned himself into one of baseball's elite infield defenders over the course of a 16-year career, which included parts of seven seasons with Cleveland. Dating back to 1990, McDonald is one of only 10 shortstops to register at least 51 Defensive Runs Saved. The Indians have also hired former pitcher Bruce Chen, who retired in 2015 after a two-start stint with Cleveland, to be a Minor League cultural development coordinator. Chen pitched in 17 seasons in the Majors with 11 teams, appearing in 400 games. Chen -- a native of Panama who speaks multiple languages -- will assist all organizational players in the transition to professional baseball, with a focus on Latin-born players. Cleveland also announced Triple-A Columbus manager Chris Tremie, Double-A manager Dave Wallace and Class A Advanced Lynchburg manager Mark Budzinski will all return to the same role in 2016.

Indians are ready and armed to win the AL Central if Minnesota falters 2. Cleveland Indians: I really want to put this team ahead of Minnesota. Why? Well, because the Indians at one point in the season had a chance to take command of the division, but failed to do so. Cleveland played their best baseball during the months of June and July where they earned a record of 31-25 over those two months. What hurt them besides their initial slide after getting even with Minnesota was how they started and finished. The Indians won just nine of 22 games in April and went 27-31 from August 1st on. Five players made the American League All-Star squad selected by Yankees Manager Joe Torre, in conjunction with Major League Baseball. One of them was not 1B/DH Travis Hafner, who ranked second in the league in OPS behind Boston’s Manny Ramirez. Not to mention, the gritty 27-year-old had ten more base hits (150) than games played. Cleveland’s team MVP: Catcher Victor Martinez - .300BA, 30HR, and 100RBI production capabilites. As far as the rotation goes, the Indians may have the best one in this division. C.C. Sabathia has already made a name for himself as a big, yet effective left-hander. He’s got 54 wins to his credit in only four major league seasons. Sabathia wants to get his ERA down to where Jake Westbrook (14-9 3.38ERA) has his at. Westbrook also pitched five complete games, most in the AL Central a season ago.
