The purpose of the draft is to assign amateur baseball players to major league teams. The draft order is determined based on the previous season's standings, with the team possessing the worst record receiving the first pick. Eligible amateur players include graduated high school players who have not attended college, any junior or community college players, and players at four-year colleges and universities three years after first enrolling or after their 21st birthdays (whichever occurs first). From 1966-1986, a January draft was held in addition to the June draft targeting high school players who graduated in the winter, junior college players, and players who had dropped out of four-year colleges and universities. To date, there have been 1,170 Maryland players selected in the First-Year Player Drafts either from a Maryland High School (337), Maryland College (458), Non-Maryland College (357), or a Maryland amateur baseball club (18). The most Maryland selections in a year was in 1970 (38) followed by 1984 (37) and 1983 (36). The first Maryland selection was Jim Spencer from Andover High School with the 11th overall selection in the inaugural 1965 June draft.

    ANNUAL REPORT A YEAR IN REVIEW | 2019 “I AM TRULY GRATEFUL FOR THIS OPPORTUNITY THAT LED ME TO DISCOVER MYSELF AS A LEADER.” - ALUMNI A YEAR OF GROWTH AND PREPARATION We talk a lot about growth at Outward Bound, but it’s so much deeper than just the opportunities we create for students to grow. As an organization, we too need to see where we can expand our capabilities as a group and as individual members of a crew. In 2019, our focus on these strategies would unknowingly prepare us for the greatest challenge our school would face in the year that followed. Just like ‘duffel shuffle’ when students arrive on campus on day one, we emptied our bags and took stock of what we had, what was needed, and how we could hit the trailhead as prepared as possible for what was to come. We worked with 6,339 students throughout the year, spanning 11,774 student program days. Our student outcomes report card, which has been our measurement tool since 2016, saw increases in social-emotional learning skills jump as much as 25% over 2018 and nearly 50% since we began collecting data in 2016. When combined with our commitment to delivering the Character Curriculum with our partners, used by 19 schools throughout the year, we can truly see the growth happening in the schools we work with. We ended the year with an important milestone as we transitioned the name of our school to Chesapeake Bay Outward Bound School in tandem with the launch of our new campus and offices in Washington DC.

    2015-2016 Immunization Status of Maryland Students Background and Notes: The immunization data is obtained through the Annual School Immunization Survey. The Annual School Immunization Survey is a self-reporting survey that each Maryland school, public and private, is required to complete and submit to the Maryland Department of Health, Center for Immunization by November 15th each year, per COMAR regulations 10.06.04.09. The survey assesses the coverage and exemption data for all Kindergarten students. This is intended to be a representative sample of immunization coverage in Maryland. Parents provide student immunization information to the schools. Schools aggregate this information and report the information to the Maryland Department of Health in the fall of each year. The data in this document display school immunization and exemption rates. The Maryland Department of Health does not have the ability to verify the accuracy of the information that was submitted by the schools. Vaccine Requirements: For students in Kindergarten, the minimum immunization requirements for attending a Maryland school in the 2015-16 school year include: 3 doses of DTaP vaccine, 3 doses of Polio vaccine, 2 doses of MMR vaccine, 2 doses of varicella vaccine, and 3 doses of Hep B vaccine. Coverage Rate: The percentage of students that are fully immunized against a specific vaccine preventable disease meeting the minimum immunization school requirements. According to COMAR 10.06.04, a parent or guardian shall provide evidence of age appropriate immunity to the preschool or school authority. A student is considered to not have age appropriate immunity if they need one or more doses of a particular vaccine to meet the vaccine requirements based on the student's grade.

Through our incredible mission, the lives of 16,500 people of color have been forever TABLE OF CONTENTS TABLE SUPPORT A BETTER CHANCE 36 transformed, empowering students to become forces of change and progress in our society. 3 DEDICATION Dear Alumni, Friends and Parents, Through the work of our talented staff, dedicated partners, and devoted National Board of Directors, 2019 was a strong year for A Better Chance. The progress we made created opportunities for nearly 500 talented students to reach their highest potential. For nearly 60 years, A Better Chance has been a preeminent force of change in our society. Through the incredible educational opportunities available through our program, the trajectory of over 16,500 lives has been altered. In 2019, 471 additional Scholars were placed at one of our 329 highly competitive Member Schools with $18.2 million in financial aid leveraged for their educations. Our devoted team made these placements possible while continuing to support the currently enrolled 2,206 Scholar community by providing summer enrichment opportunities, internships and leadership development workshops. We extend our thanks and appreciation to Sandra E. Timmons for her tireless leadership as President of the organization over the past sixteen years.
