Chapter (1) Introduction 1.1 General: Considering the need for low-cost construction materials especially in the rural areas in Sudan, the production, and the use of the durable low cost building materials such as lime and Pozzolana which are available in big quantities in many parts of the Sudan, become of very great importance. Pozzolana and lime can be produced with much less sophisticated technology than Portland cement. This means that Pozzolana and lime can be produced at relatively low cost and requires much less Pozzolana exchange than cement. Like many other developing countries Sudan suffers from housing shortage against the ever increasing demand not only due to the continuous displacement from rural to urban areas because of war, drought and natural disasters, but also dwellings are needed for returnees after peace. Conventional materials, such as concrete, timber, bricks and steel, used in walls and roofs, which contribute up to over 90% of the cost of low cost dwelling, are beyond the reach of most of the poor population. On the other hand traditional materials, mainly earth products and thatch, are subject to weathering, insect attack and fire hazard. The solution to this problem is thought to be by using substitute materials produced or developed from traditional construction materials to reduce the cost to a minimum. Soil, being one of the traditional materials, offers many advantages when used as construction material. These include availability, ease of use, cheapness, suitability to most parts of the building, and that it is environment friendly. The disadvantages of soil are being less durable, poor in tension, lacking of acceptability among social groups and institutions. -

The American University of Rome Religious Studies Program Department or degree program mission statement, student learning objectives, as appropriate Course Title: Sacred Space: Religious Architecture of Rome Course Number: AHRE 106 Credits & hours: 3 credits – 3 hours Pre/Co‐Requisites: None Course description The course explores main ideas behind the sacral space on the example of sacral architecture of Rome, from the ancient times to the postmodern. The course maximizes the opportunity of onsite teaching in Rome; most of the classes are held in the real surrounding, which best illustrates particular topics of the course. Students will have the opportunity to learn about different religious traditions, various religious ideas and practices (including the ancient Roman religion, early Christianity, Roman Catholicism, Orthodoxy and Protestantism, as well as the main elements of religion and sacred spaces of ancient Judaism and Islam). Students will have the opportunity to experience a variety of sacred spaces and learn about the broader cultural and historical context in which they appeared. A BLOG FOR ANCIENT COINS ON THE PAS BY SAM MOORHEAD & ANDREW BROWN Issue 6 by Andrew Brown – 24 March 2020 Trajan and Dacia Often coins recorded through the PAS hint at or provide direct links to the wider Roman world. This can be anything from depictions of the Emperors, through to places, key events, battles, and even architecture. Good examples of this are seen in the coinage of Trajan (AD 98- 117), particularly in relation to his two military campaigns in Dacia – the landscape of modern-day Romania and Moldova, notably around the Carpathian Mountains (Transylvania) – in AD 101-102 and AD 105-106. Dacia, with her king Decebalus, was considered a potential threat to Rome as well as a source of great natural wealth, particularly gold. Trajan’s victorious Dacian Wars resulted in the southern half of Dacia being annexed as the Roman Marcus Ulpius Traianus province of Dacia Traiana in AD 106, rejuvenated the (AD 98-117) Roman economy, and brought Trajan glory. His triumph (PUBLIC-6A513E) instigated 123 days of celebrations with Roman games that involved 10,000 gladiators and even more wild animals! Coins of Trajan are not uncommon.1 The PAS has over 3,200 examples (https://finds.org.uk/database/search/result s/ruler/256/objecttype/COIN/broadperiod/ ROMAN ) for Trajan alone, as well as much rarer examples of coins struck for his wife Plotina (2 examples), sister Marciana (5 examples), and niece Matidia (1 example). 1 The standard reference is RIC II. However, this has been superseded by the work of Bernhard Woytek, the leading expert on Trajanic coinage, in his Die Reichsprägung des Kaisers Traianus (98-117) (MIR 14, Vienna, 2010). -

I start with Agrippa's Pantheon, the original Pantheon that is no longer standing, which was built in 27 or 25 BC. What did it look like originally under Augustus? Why was it built? We then shift to the Pantheon that stands today, Hadrian-Trajan's Pantheon, which was completed around AD 125-128, and represents an example of an architectural reVolution. Was it eVen a temple? We also look at the Pantheon's conversion to a church, which helps explain why it is so well preserVed. -

An Introduction to Pozzolana and Pozzolanic Cement INTRODUCTION: Pozzolana, also known as pozzolanic ash, is a fine, sandy volcanic ash. Pozzolanic ash was first discovered and dug in Italy at Pozzuoli , in the region around Vesuvius. It was later discovered at a number of other sites as well. Vitruvius speaks of four types of pozzolana: black, white, grey, and red, all of which can be found in the volcanic areas of Italy, such as Naples. Pozzolana is a siliceous and aluminous material which reacts with calcium hydroxide in the presence of water. This forms compounds possessing cementitious properties at room temperature which have the ability to set underwater. It transformed the possibilities for making concrete structures, although it took the Romans some time to discover its full potential. Typically it was mixed two-to-one with lime just prior to mixing with water. The Roman port at Cosa was built of Pozzolana that was poured underwater, apparently using a long tube to carefully lay it up without allowing sea water to mix with it. The three piers are still visible today, with the underwater portions in generally excellent condition even after more than 2100 years. Portland Pozzolanic Cements are a mix of natural or industrial pozzolans and Portland cement. In addition to underwater use, the high alkalinity of pozzolana makes it especially resistant to common forms of corrosion from sulphates. Once fully hardened, the Portland Pozzolana Cement (PPC) will be stronger than Ordinary Portland Cement(OPC), due to its lower porosity, which also makes it more resistant to water absorption and spalling. -

Spolia from the Baths of Caracallain Sta. Maria in Trastevere Dale Kinney Eight third-century Ionic capitals with images of Isis, Serapis, and Harpocrates, now in the nave colonnades of Sta. Maria in Trastevere, were taken from one or both of the rooms currently identified as libraries in the Baths of Caracalla. The capitals were transferred around 1140, when the church was rebuilt by Pope In- nocent II. The capitals would have been acquired by confiscation, juridically the pope's prerogative as head of the papal state; the lavish display of all kinds of spolia in Sta. Maria in Trastevere is here interpreted as a self-conscious demon- stration of that prerogative. The identity of the capitals' pagan images would have been unknown to most twelfth-century observers, because the only accessible keys to the correct identifications were one sentence in Varro's De lingua latina and another in Saint Augustine's De civitate Dei. -

Thus, in order to make concrete more sustainable one may work along one or more of the following routes; 1) Replacing cement in con- crete with larger amounts of supplementary cementing materials (SCMs) than usual, 2) Replacing cement in concrete with combinations of SCMs leading to synergic reactions enhancing strength, 3) Producing leaner concrete with less cement per cubic meter utilizing plasticizers and 4) Making concrete with local aggregate susceptible to alkali silica reaction (ASR) by using cement replacements, thus avoiding long transport of non-reactive aggregate. 1 Introduction SCMs, also uncommon ones like calcined marl 2.
