Edinburgh College Facilities & Services Profile ‘Taking the plunge with electric pool cars’ FEI +25,500 students About the project (Full & Part time) 1,400 staff Summary 4 campuses Edinburgh College’s trailblazing electric pool car fleet offers staff a Urban & Rural reach One of the largest sustainable, low-carbon, low-cost transport option for intra-campus and other corporate travel. This has positively changed attitudes towards EV’s Scottish Colleges. and allows multiple learning opportunities for our students through engagement with our curriculum. The sector-leading project has delivered immediate positive impacts and continues to evolve. Project partners SEStran, Phoenix Mitsubishi, AF Nobles Nissan, Transport Scotland, ChargePlace Scotland, Energy Saving Trust, Automotive Leasing, Midlothian Council, East Lothian Council, Edinburgh Napier University. The Results The problem Private car journeys for business purposes had been identified as the least sustainable transport option for our staff. To meet the needs of our Carbon Management & Green Travel Plans, a new approach was required to tackle this ‘Grey Fleet’ mileage. One which would also provide new and exciting educational opportunities for our students. The approach Following a successful trial an all-electric pool car fleet was created. Aimed at providing staff with a low-carbon, low-cost transport option, reducing ‘Grey Fleet’ use, link the 4 campuses across the city, and harvest data for an ongoing research project. The initial 4 car fleet is now 12 vehicles, plus a fully electric minibus. Our goals Our Carbon Management Plan has a target of 18% minimum reduction by 2020. Current footprint is some 7000 t/CO2 per annum. -

This position has been achieved with the continuing support of the Scottish Funding Council in funding the College as a Small Specialist Institution. Fixed Assets Purchases are in respect of the renewal and improvement of existing equipment and buildings, and the increase in provision of computer equipment. Other Operating Expenses Spend on non-pay budgets is monitored throughout the year with variances requiring explanation; action is taken where there is a likelihood of any overspend in the year. -

The ‘when, how and what’ of Text Based Wayfinding Instructions for Urban Pedestrians William Mackaness1, Phil Bartie2, Candela Sanchez-Rodilla Espeso1 1School of GeoSciences, The University of Edinburgh, Drummond St, Edinburgh EH8 9XP 2School of Natural Sciences, Stirling University, Stirling FK9 4LA [email protected] Keywords: built environment, pedestrian wayfinding, landmark saliency, LBS 1.0 A Context – urban pedestrian wayfinding The smartphone has become a conduit by which we access many different services (Raper et al. 2007; Kray et al 2005) in many different ways (Shneiderman 2004). Increasingly wayfinding in urban environments is supported by smartphone technology using maps and images; these demand our full attention (Gluck 1991; May et al. 2003). But our ambition is technology that is concealed (Weiser and Brown 1998), delivering only spoken instructions (Bartie and Mackaness 2006; Mackaness et al. 2013), thus leaving the pedestrian ‘eyes free’ and ‘hands free’ to enjoy the city. As a precursor to their spoken delivery, we report on the evaluation of a text based system in which subjects were directed by a series of landmark based instructions or street based instructions that were geo-located. Section 2.0 describes the underlying model, Section 3.0 the experiment and subsequent feedback and analysis gained through: trajectory analysis, questionnaires and a focus group. 2.0 A City Model to support Landmark modelling and instruction construction A map is data rich (hence requiring a lot of cognitive effort), whilst a dialogue based system needs to be efficient, and minimalist (we don’t want to bore the pedestrian to death), yet sufficiently robust that the user does not get lost. -
