MMJHL Showcase Highlights Transcona Railer Express Talent

By Lisa Kowalski Some great ideas can happen when you brainstorm. It was just over three years ago when the Major Junior Hockey League, the team owners and the team management did just that. They met, they worked together and developed a list of ideas to increase the focus on the many skilled, hard-working players in this league. Their winning idea was implemented and the MMJHL showcase weekend was born. Now an annual event the recent MMJHL talent showcase weekend was held at the Bell MTS Iceplex from January 12 to 14, 2018. Each of the league’s ten teams played two games in a venue built to feature the top hockey players in the province. The Express had games against Jerry Sodomlak, Transcona Railer Express the Pembina Valley Twisters and the President and MMJHL Charleswood Hawks, working hard to Showcase Chairman win both games, four important points earned as the team focuses on playoffs. Noah Skorpad and Connor Shaw were both named players of the game. A big thank you to Express President Jerry Sodomlak, who as the MMJHL Showcase Chair his hard work, expertise and team of volunteers make this showcase happen. Continued on page 22

A local college offers a diploma in near-wall sweeping and a separate posi- tion is created. Regular floor-sweepers are no longer allowed to sweep near walls and certified near-wall sweepers get paid more than regular floor-sweep- ers. One day a regular floor-sweeper sees a dust bunny near a wall directly in the path of an approaching forklift. Panic ensues! Soon a new process is devel- oped to empower that worker to stop the forklift from moving forward until a certi- fied near-wall sweeper can arrive to clear out the dust bunny. There’s a persistent rumour that near-wall sweepers are de- liberately leaving dust bunnies in halls that are accessed only after hours so they can pick up overtime. Members of the public complain that floor-sweepers in this warehouse seem to sweep at half the speed of workers at privately owned warehouses. The cost savings in reduced forklift maintenance are completely obliterated by the burden- some bureaucracy that resulted. The cost to the taxpayers is substantial.

So another approach the govern- ment could take is to tender a contract. Three bids are received and the lowest • Drywall & Taping • Carpentry one is selected.
