This is a very logical name for anyone who speaks Dutch, but not in any other language. In the past, Miffy had a different name in every language. She was known as "le petit lapin" in French, for example, and as "kleintjie" in Afrikaans, but since she is known as Miffy everywhere outside the Netherlands. Dick Bruna is sometimes referred to as "the father of Miffy", but after turning 80 in he began referring to himself as "the grandfather of Miffy". Depending on the story, Miffy can range in age from being a baby to being four years old. At first Miffy looked like a toy animal with floppy ears, but by , her design was changed to her current incarnation, a stylized form of a rabbit. Miffy is drawn in a graphic style, with minimalist black graphic lines. Bruna chose to only use black, white, the primary colors red, yellow and blue , green, orange, brown, and gray. It is his use of primarily primary colors that makes Miffy instantly recognisable, and also popular with preschoolers, because of her bright and intense simplistic colors. There are now almost 32 Miffy titles and many more for the other characters. Bruna has produced a total of picture books for children. The Miffy books each contain twelve pages of story. Each page has one illustration and four lines of verse, the last word of the second line rhymes with the last of the fourth. They are written about things that children can understand, and situations they will face such as going to the hospital and going to school, and they always have a happy ending. Some books have no text at all, such as Miffy's Dream. The books are printed in small format. Bruna considers it important that his audience feels that his books are there for them, not for their parents. Most Miffy books have an advisory reading level of age 4 to 8 years. Bruna's books have now been translated into more than 50 different languages, and over 85 million copies have been sold all over the world. The other characters that appear in the books are her family: Miffy's parents, her Grandma and Grandpa, her Auntie Alice, and 'Uncle Brian,' a family friend, who appears in Miffy Goes Flying. She also has many friends, Boris and Barbara Bear, who first appeared in and are boyfriend and girlfriend, Poppy Pig, who appeared in , and her niece Grunty, Snuffy, who appeared in , and other bunnies such as Aggie and Melanie. Miffy was designed as a children's book character, but the design is now used on many other things like clothes, stationery, toys, glasses, household items etc. In the early s, an image of Miffy holding an adjustable spanner coyly behind her back appeared on flyers produced by people taking direct action against the UK government's road building program. This unauthorised use of the character spread [4] and Miffy became a mascot for groups involved in radical ecological direct action. Each episode was traditionally animated and ran for approximately five minutes. From to , Miffy and Friends aired on children's television channels such as Treehouse in Canada, and Noggin in the U.

  • PUBLIC FOUNDATION GREATER Educational Resource DES MOINES ART MIFFY FOUNTAIN by TOM SACHS
PUBLIC FOUNDATION GREATER Educational Resource DES MOINES ART MIFFY FOUNTAIN BY TOM SACHS PHOTO: BEN EASTER ARTWORK BIO Miffy is a cute little bunny who is the star of an internationally renowned series of children’s books that follow her innocent adventures. Drawn with simple lines and flat, bright colors, she has become an icon of childhood, with almost 40 Miffy books translated into over 50 languages. Miffy is also a merchandising giant, with her features found on dozens of commercial objects. The contemporary American artist Tom Sachs adapts the sweet and guileless bunny in his Miffy Fountain in which she cries a fountain of tears which fall into a pool surrounding her. Transformed from the pages of a children’s book into a three- dimensional, monumental sculpture, Miffy was constructed with foamcore and glue which was then cast into bronze and painted white. ARTIST BIO Sculptor Tom Sachs is best known for reinterpreting modern icons and commenting on consumerist and capitalist culture. Sachs engineers materials of all sorts in his works, often leaving evidence of his construction process, as he does in Miffy Fountain, where the seams of the original foamcore sections are maintained in the bronze. The artist is interested in subverting the slick anonymity of many manufactured objects by purposely revealing how his objects are fabricated, as he explained: “I want 1 labor to be the point, because everything in our lives is miraculously made with no idea of how it’s done….I wanted a transparency of construction.”* *www.artnet.com/artists/tom-sachs/2 Sachs furthered his repertoire with a Nike sneaker collaboration, releasing the NikeCraft Mars Yard sneaker in 2012.

WILDBRAIN CPLG TEAMS UP WITH ISTITUTO EUROPEO DI DESIGN FOR MIFFY 65TH ANNIVERSARY PROJECT Plush designs created by international students now on display in ‘Miffy: 65 Years a Source of Inspiration’ exhibition in the Netherlands London UK – 28 July 2020 – WildBrain CPLG, one of the world’s leading entertainment, sport and brand licensing agencies, has teamed up with Italian design school Istituto Europeo di Design (IED Milano) for a fashion project to celebrate the 65th anniversary of Mercis BV’s classic character brand Miffy. The project saw students from award-winning design schools in the UK, Hong Kong, Italy, Mexico, and the Netherlands create limited edition Miffy plush, which are now on display in an exhibition titled ‘Miffy: 65 Years a Source of Inspiration’ at Centraal Museum in Utrecht. Massimo Giacon, Tutor and Professor at IED, said: “I was delighted to oversee this design project - the Miffy character is known and loved all over the world, and it was an invigorating creative challenge. My priority was to demonstrate the story behind Miffy, and emphasise the character’s innocence and magic - harnessing the youthful energy and hope of our students as a lens for the project. Even if in our contemporary world there seems to be no space for simplicity and goodness, actually there is a great need for beauty. The final results created by IED students were so amazing they inspired me to create my own Miffy designs, and I’m sure all visitors to the exhibition will feel the same type of magic from this adorable character.” Maria Gurrieri, Managing Director at WildBrain CPLG Southern Europe, said: “It has been a real pleasure to collaborate with Mercis BV and IED Milano on this project to celebrate young artists and design excellence as part of Miffy’s 65th anniversary.
