He leaves behind a substantial and formidable K body of work which will be explored and developed over the years to come. What follows here is an introductory survey of his work — a basis for deeper, more substantial consideration of his work in the future. Born in Essex in 1924, Kenneth Grant developed an intense interest in the occult from an early age, as well as a life-long devotion to Buddhism and other oriental religions. He remarked somewhere in his writings that Eastern mysticism was his first love — an indication not only of how well read he was, but more importantly perhaps his heightened sense of the immanent. Grant relates in Outside the Circles of Time how he had come across a copy of Magick in Theory and Practice — at Zwemmers, in the Charing Cross Road — in the late 1930s or early 1940s. At this period he had also discovered Austin Osman Spare’s The Book of Pleasure at Michael Houghton’s Atlantis Bookshop in Museum Street. After immersing himself in the works of Crowley, he finally managed to make contact with him in 1944, writing to the address provided in The Book of Thoth which had just been published. Visiting him several times, Grant subsequently stayed with him at ‘Netherwood’ in Hastings in 1945, immersed in Magick. Many years later, Grant wrote a memoir of this period of his life, Remembering Aleister Crowley. -

Trafficking with Elementals: Kenneth Grant and Arthur Machen Christopher Josiffe Kenneth Grant, born in 1924, is widely regarded as the ‘grand old man’ of British post-war occult scene. Grant is unique in that he is almost certainly the only person still alive to have known all three of the most influential figures in the twentieth century occult world, having had close personal relationships with both Aleister Crowley and Austin Osman Spare, and also having worked with Gerald Gardner, godfather of the modern Wiccan movement. It has long been acknowledged by students of the occult that Grant has made extensive use of the work of H.P. Lovecraft in his numerous writings and in his magical practices. It is perhaps less well-known that many elements from Arthur Machen’s fiction also features heavily in Grant’s work; in particular, The Novel of the Black Seal, The Hill of Dreams, and The White People. In 1944 Grant contacted Crowley with the intention of becoming his pupil; during these last three years of Crowley’s life Grant was also his secretary and personal assistant. The latter role included the supply of appropriate reading matter; in his fascinating and touching Crowley memoir, Remembering Aleister Crowleyi, Grant quotes a letter from Crowley in which the aged Beast writes: “Very many thanks for Secret Glory {Arthur Machen}; best of his I’ve read. Criticism when I’m strong enough.” (16 Jan 1945)ii. And later that year, at Crowley’s final home, the Hastings guest house Netherwood, they both experienced a vision of Pan, as Grant recounts: The Great God Pan: one morning at ‘Netherwood’, when Crowley accompanied me from the guest-house to the cottage, we experienced a joint ‘vision’ of a satyr-like form in the early spring sunshine. -

For the most part, it can be performed without complicated rituals, needs hardly any paraphernalia, is independent of philosophical and dogmatic premises and, due to its simplicity, can be learned easily and quickly. Most important of all, none of the magical techniques we know of today is more efficient and will give even beginners the immediate chance to convince themselves of its power and their own abilities. -

Present Pasts, 7(1): 2, pp. 1–10, DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.5334/pp.73 RESEARCH PAPER Lucifer Over Luxor: Archaeology, Egyptology, and Occultism in Kenneth Anger’s Magick Lantern Cycle Ethan Doyle White* One of the great figureheads of American experimental cinema, Kenneth Anger (b.1927), is internationally renowned for his pioneering work, recognisable for its blend of homoerotica, popular and classical music, and dark, symbolist imagery. A follower of Thelema, the religion of infamous British occultist Aleister Crowley (1875–1947), Anger’s work is imbued with occult themes and undercurrents rarely comprehen- sible to the non-initiated viewer. In exploring these esoteric ideas, Anger makes use of archaeology and heritage in his short filmsEaux d’Artifice (1953) and Inauguration of the Pleasure Dome (1954–66), as well as in the lost films The Love That Whirls (1949) and Thelema Abbey (1955), which utilize such disparate elements as Aztec human sacrifice and putative Renaissance Satanism. However, this theme only reaches its apex in Lucifer Rising (1980), an exploration of Thelemic theology filmed at such sites as Avebury, Luxor, and Karnak, which reflects and propagates the Thelemic view of the past—an ‘alternative archaeology’ rooted in Crowley’s own fascination with Egyptomania. This paper seeks to explore Anger’s use of the past and place it in its proper context of twentieth-century Western esotericism. Kenneth Anger (b.1927) is one of the foremost figures of through the transformation of individual consciousness American experimental cinema, an artist who produced via artistic mediums (Hughes 2011: 12). -

(First published in the Journal for the Academic Study of Magic, 2004) Justin Woodman Introduction This article examines the significance of the category of the ‘demonic’ as applied within the theory and practice of ‘Lovecraftian’ magick1: a ‘style’ of magical practice inspired by the fictional universe of the ‘Cthulhu mythos’ created by the author H. P. Lovecraft, and popularised within certain sectors of the contemporary Euro-American magical subculture. For these contemporary ‘Lovecraftian’ magicians, the demonic is mobilised as a potent ‘apocalyptic’ weapon in contesting the alienating consequences of modernity, and forms an ambivalent moral category distinct from Christianised conceptions of supernatural evil. An equivalent moral ambivalence has also been noted in a number of recent anthropological accounts of postcolonial African modernities2 - modernities partly characterised by an emerging (and global) tendency ‘to interpret modern processes of change in terms of ‘witchcraft’’ 3. These accounts recognise that the idiom of the demonic - both in African contexts and more widely - encompasses a simultaneous fascination with and desire to be ‘modern’, and a deep anxiety about where society is heading. Uru).y Professor Philip Armstrong Adviser Comparative Studies Graduate,, Program ABSTRACT Entrenched in Victorian England and raised in a puritanical Christian family, Aleister Crowley delved into Western Esotericism and the study of ritual magic as a means to subvert the stifling environment into which he was bom. Among his chief acts of subversion were his many displays of a very fluid and malleable identity. He played with “selves” like they were merely wardrobes for a day and found himself developing more fully for the breadth of experience that he achieved from such practices. In the wake of Friedrich Nietszche, Crowley looked to the strength of each individual will to deny being identified by traditional systems such as Christianity or “Modernity,” pushing instead for a chaotic presentation of the self that is both wholly opposed to external authority and wholly enthusiastic about play, contradiction and experimentation. Through the lens of Michel Foucault’s “Technologies of the Self' and Judith Butler’s notion of performativity, one can come to see Crowley’s performances (through dress, pseudonyms, literary license and more) as operations that he performs on himself to knowingly affect a change in his identity.
