Merleau-Ponty and the Plunge Into the Present by Jill Marie Gilbert A Toward A Phenomenology of Depression: Merleau-Ponty and the Plunge into the Present By Jill Marie Gilbert A Thesis presented to The University of Guelph In partial fulfillment of requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Philosophy Guelph, Ontario, Canada ©Jill Marie Gilbert, January, 2014 ABSTRACT TOWARD A PHENOMENOLOGY OF DEPRESSION: MERLEAU-PONTY AND THE PLUNGE INTO THE PRESENT Jill Gilbert Advisor: University of Guelph, 2014 Dr. John Russon The goal of this work is to try to understand and identify the reality that corresponds to the word “depression.” My orientation is to treat depression as a problem that is nonetheless a way of living, and an experience that will be better understood and articulated through the performing of a phenomenological investigation. I proceed in three stages, and this phenomenology will be the third, and final stage. I present in the first stage crucial insights from the tradition of phenomenological inquiry, regarding what form lived experience actually takes, drawing primarily from Merleau-Ponty and thinkers inspired by him. The second stage draws on a synthetic, historical account to determine what the reality corresponding to depression has been. The third stage of the thesis, and my main accomplishment, will be to unite these first two parts into a phenomenological description of the lived experience of depression. This stage is oriented towards demonstrating that the phenomenon can be understood as the inter-relation of four fundamental features. iii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS It is no doubt true that any acknowledgement page is difficult to write. Not only are there so many people to thank, but the depth of the support that I have felt is great; these are no small or insignificant remarks of gratitude, but rather they reflect a feeling that the people with whom I am intimate and from whom I have learned have allowed for the possibility that this dissertation be completed. When I met John Russon, I knew that I had someone remarkable to guide and teach me. What I did not know, and have come to learn, is that his philosophical work and his dedication to the particulars of my situation reflect one and the same commitment, and would be life changing. He fostered personal growth that allowed for a very different thesis than would otherwise have been. I am profoundly grateful for each and every aspect of my relationship with my teacher and mentor. Bruce Gilbert, philosopher and brother extraordinaire, I thank for his rock-like support and love, conversations about many aspects of the work itself, and all other aspects of my development.     Open Theology 2017; 3: 321–337 Phenomenology of Religious Experience Open Access Peter Costello* Heidegger and Scripture: The Calling of Thinking in Our Abandonment DOI 10.1515/opth-2017-0025 Received June 5, 2017; accepted June 14, 2017 Abstract: This paper seeks to perform an interdisciplinary reading of some scriptural passages in light of Heidegger‘s phenomenology generally and his discussion of thinking in particular. The paper treats one passage from Isaiah and two from the Gospels of Luke and John that highlight the human situation of signification (or meaning) and abandonment (or alienation). Using Heidegger‘s description of experience, which roots the logic and unfolding of meaning as expressing the structure of human existence, the paper proposes that the movement toward the divine that each of the scriptural passages embodies (albeit each in its own unique situation) moves us toward an essential insight--namely that the human being exists as a divine sign of care. As such a sign, humans exist not just as the reception of the calling but also as the very calling of thinking itself. CRSC (Crop Science) 117 Ancient Athens produced the two philosophical thinkers that tower over all who came before and all who came after: Plato (c.427-c.347 B.C.) and Aristotle (384-322 B.C.). These thinkers, from the period of the flourishing of ancient Greek culture, effectively invented the practice of philosophy that has shaped and transformed Western culture and, indeed, world-culture. The Greek philosophers were especially concerned with describing accurately the nature of reality, and then trying to understand the place of the human being within reality. We will begin our study of their with the insights of philosophers before Socrates, and consider the dynamic and rational nature of reality. We will then turn to the figure of Socrates himself, the Athenian philosopher who inspired Plato and is the subject of Plato’s writings. We will look at his distinctive method, and see how this method is related, in Plato’s philosophy, to the insights of the pre-Socratic philosophers. We will then look at the works of Plato’s student, Aristotle, (who was himself supposedly the teacher of Alexander the Great), for the systematic study of nature and our place in it. We will conclude, finally, with the Roman philosopher Seneca—the advisor to the Roman Emperor Nero—to see how the Greek philosophical perspective has developed and been transformed in dealing with the realities of political life in the time of the Roman Empire.

The author argues that Heidegger’s thought opens the way for descriptive conceptual analysis of religious experience and its object without undue theoretical distortion or reduction. Heidegger dismantles uncritical distortions of religious life under “scientific” rationality and objectivity. While the self-understanding implicit in religious practice is certainly transformed through Heidegger’s own philosophical analysis, philosophy undergoes its own transformation through thinking encounter with religious life. Philosophy cannot produce an objectively neutral, universal analysis of religion, but must in its own way participate in the object of religious life. The wonder and awe at the manifestation of being which gives rise to philosophical questioning finds orientation in poetic and revelatory sources of inspiration whose content exceeds conceptual grasp. Philosophical questioning brings thought to the paradoxes at the limits of our understanding of language and human experience. Philosophy cannot conceive of the origin systematically. But religious attunement to the origin, aided by the prophetic utterances of the poet, then enables philosophical speculation as to the highest form of human flourishing. Our method is dialectic, bringing a survey of Aristotle’s philosophy together the argumentation of our thesis. We started from the very beginning of the Aristotelian corpus, we devoted our first two chapters to Aristotle’s logic, chapters III and IV to his philosophy of nature, and our last chapters V and VI to his ethical political philosophy. Thus, we have worked on four fundamental meanings of logos respectively: “standard”, “proportion”, “reason” and “discourse”. Our thesis is the following. In its four fundamental meanings in Aristotle’s philosophy, logos each time refers back to a focal meaning: a relation between terms that preserves them together in their difference instead of collapsing one term to the other or holding them in indifference.
