Bruce Jenkins: No. This series began about nine years ago, and I think we're perhaps eight and a half years a little late in bringing you for a retrospective in an evening like this. I'm enormously grateful you've taken time to be with us and share your work, and share your experiences. I want to start by talking a little bit about how you came to film, what your early experiences were with the cinema. Stan Brakhage: Well first of all, as I told you this afternoon, but it's a good story worth repeating. I lived in Bisbee, Arizona for a while. During that period there was a man who owned the local theater, or his father-in-law owned it actually. He was stuck with being the only movie theater in town. He was a painter himself, and this was a hard job for him. To keep from being bored to death, he made a thing called The March of Times of Bisbee. Those that don't know The March of Times, it's parodied at the beginning of Citizen Kane, and was a weekly magazine that Life and Time magazine put out in the movie houses in those days. He would photograph events in town, like the mayor laying the cornerstone for a new building or whatever, but also he went around and photographed people in their private lives.
