  • Inventory of American Sheet Music (1844-1949)
    University of Dubuque / Charles C. Myers Library INVENTORY OF AMERICAN SHEET MUSIC (1844 – 1949) May 17, 2004 Introduction The Charles C. Myers Library at the University of Dubuque has a collection of 573 pieces of American sheet music (of which 17 are incomplete) housed in Special Collections and stored in acid free folders and boxes. The collection is organized in three categories: African American Music, Military Songs, and Popular Songs. There is also a bound volume of sheet music and a set of The Etude Music Magazine (32 items from 1932-1945). The African American music, consisting of 28 pieces, includes a number of selections from black minstrel shows such as “Richards and Pringle’s Famous Georgia Minstrels Songster and Musical Album” and “Lovin’ Sam (The Sheik of Alabami)”. There are also pieces of Dixieland and plantation music including “The Cotton Field Dance” and “Massa’s in the Cold Ground”. There are a few pieces of Jazz music and one Negro lullaby. The group of Military Songs contains 148 pieces of music, particularly songs from World War I and World War II. Different branches of the military are represented with such pieces as “The Army Air Corps”, “Bell Bottom Trousers”, and “G. I. Jive”. A few of the delightful titles in the Military Songs group include, “Belgium Dry Your Tears”, “Don’t Forget the Salvation Army (My Doughnut Girl)”, “General Pershing Will Cross the Rhine (Just Like Washington Crossed the Delaware)”, and “Hello Central! Give Me No Man’s Land”. There are also well known titles including “I’ll Be Home For Christmas (If Only In my Dreams)”.

    The Rita Williams Popular Song Collection A Handlist A wide-ranging collection of c. 4000 individual popular songs, dating from the 1920s to the 1970s and including songs from films and musicals. Originally the personal collection of the singer Rita Williams, with later additions, it includes songs in various European languages and some in Afrikaans. Rita Williams sang with the Billy Cotton Club, among other groups, and made numerous recordings in the 1940s and 1950s. The songs are arranged alphabetically by title. The Rita Williams Popular Song Collection is a closed access collection. Please ask at the enquiry desk if you would like to use it. Please note that all items are reference only and in most cases it is necessary to obtain permission from the relevant copyright holder before they can be photocopied. Since the action took place in a boat on the open sea, where would the music come from? Raksin reportedly responded by asking Hitchcock where the cameras came from. This course examines film sound practices, focusing on cross-modal perception and cognition: on ways in which sounds influence what we “see” and images influence what we “hear.” Classes are conducted in a lecture format and involve multimedia demonstrations. We will be tackling the following questions: • How and why does music and sound effects work in films? • How did they come to be paired with the motion picture? • How did film sound conventions develop and what are their theoretical, socio-cultural, and cognitive bases? • How does non-speech sound contribute to a film’s narrative and how can such contribution be creatively explored? August 11, 1915; d. July 2, 2006) was born in Rochester, NY. He graduated from the University of Rochester in 1937 with distinction with a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics; he was also elected to the academic honors society Phi Beta Kappa. In 1941, he moved to Washington, DC, to work in the Army Ordnance Division of the War Department as a research analyst. He left that position in 1954 to restore a house he purchased in Georgetown. Subsequently, in 1956, he joined the National Automobile Dealers Association as a research analyst and worked there until his retirement in 1972. He was an avid musician and concert-goer: he was a talented pianist, and he composed music throughout his life.

    1 “The Sound of Music” (1965) Added to the National Registry: 2017 Essay by Caryl Flinn (guest post)* Rodgers & Hammerstein Original album Julie Andrews There’s no question that the enduring popularity of “The Sound of Music” has been enhanced by its soundtrack, which has performed as robustly as the movie. Although many don’t consider Rodgers and Hammerstein’s songs for the show their best, it has been, by far, their most beloved and successful nearly from its debut. Released on March 2, 1965, the soundtrack went gold before “The Sound of Music” even premiered on April 1st. Its release gave consumers an early taste of an already well-publicized cinematic event (opening night in New York involved assigned, VIP seats only), and the recording introduced them to Rodgers and Hammerstein’s enjoyable songs for the show. Some may have known the majority of songs from the 1959 stage show with Mary Martin, but this soundtrack offered the radiant, crystalline voice of Julie Andrews. The English star had taken the US musical scene by storm in 1956, starring in Lerner & Lowe’s “My Fair Lady,” and smashed records for the longest-running Broadway show up to that time. The next year, more people got to see her when she appeared in a live, broadcast version of “Cinderella” in 1957 (again, Rodgers & Hammerstein); and in 1964, Andrews’s performance as “Mary Poppins” captivated audiences—especially, women and children—and won her an Oscar. Director Robert Wise then scooped her up for “Music” before “Poppins” was even released, based solely on rushes he’d seen at Disney.
