Viking Interview: Q&A with Jamey Jasta By Daniel Offner When uttered, the name “Hatebreed” brings many things to mind, but what stands out most is the vocal talent of Jamey Jasta. Jasta, along with band mate Chris Beattie, founded the band in 1994 out of New Haven, Connecticut. Jasta is not only the lead singer of Hatebreed but has also gone off to do successful side projects with bands Icepick and Kingdom of Sorrow. He has also gone off to host MTV’s reincarnation of the 80’s hit program Headbanger’s Ball. This year Jamey will be touring with both Hatebreed (on the Jagermeister Music Tour) and Kingdom of Sorrow (at Ozzfest in Texas). The following is my Viking Interview with Jamey Jasta. Viking News: Where did the name Hatebreed come from? Jamey Jasta: “From the Misfits song ‘Hatebreeders’. We just took off the ‘e-r- s’.” VN: What inspired you guys to play music? JJ: “Well I think when me and (Chris) Beattie started the band we were already in other bands, and the other bands fizzled out. So to start this band and to play this music the inspiration was to do something bigger and better and more focused. But I think initially for both of us we were just drawn to music because of the community in itself.” VN: What type of bands influenced your style of music as a whole? JJ: “I would say bands like Slayer, Sepultura, Obituary, Entombed and more metal stuff like Carcass. On the hardcore side Agnostic Front, Killing Time, Sheer Terror, Integrity, Earth Crisis and bands like that.” VN: You mentioned Agnostic Front, which is playing the Dour Festival with you guys in Belgium.

  • From Crass to Thrash, to Squeakers: the Suspicious Turn to Metal in UK Punk and Hardcore Post ‘85
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by De Montfort University Open Research Archive From Crass to Thrash, to Squeakers: The Suspicious Turn to Metal in UK Punk and Hardcore Post ‘85. Otto Sompank I always loved the simplicity and visceral feel of all forms of punk. From the Pistols take on the New York Dolls rock, or the UK Subs aggressive punk take on rhythm and blues. The stark reality Crass and the anarchist-punk scene was informed with aspects of obscure seventies rock too, for example Pete Wright’s prog bass lines in places. Granted. Perhaps the most famous and intense link to rock and punk was Motorhead. While their early output and LP’s definitely had a clear nod to punk (Lemmy playing for the Damned), they appealed to most punks back then with their sheer aggression and intensity. It’s clear Motorhead and Black Sabbath influenced a lot of street-punk and the ferocious tones of Discharge and their Scandinavian counterparts such as Riistetyt, Kaaos and Anti Cimex. The early links were there but the influence of late 1970s early 80s NWOBM (New Wave of British Heavy Metal) and street punk, Discharge etc. in turn influenced Metallica, Anthrax and Exodus in the early eighties. Most of them can occasionally be seen sporting Discharge, Broken Bones and GBH shirts on their early record-sleeve pictures. Not only that, Newcastle band Venom were equally influential in the mix of new genre forms germinating in the early 1980s. One of the early examples of the incorporation of rock and metal into the UK punk scene came from Discharge.

There would be no Nirvana, Beastie Boys or Red Hot Chili Peppers were it not for hardcore pioneers such as Black Flag, Bad Brains and Minor Threat. Hardcore was more than music—it was a social movement created by Reagan-era misfit kids. The participants constituted a tribe unto themselves—some finding a voice, others an escape in the hard-edged music. And while some sought a better world, others were just angry and wanted to raise hell. AMERICAN HARDCORE traces this lost subculture, from its early roots in 1980 to its extinction in 1986. Page 2 ABOUT THE PRODUCTION Paul Rachman and Steven Blush met through the hardcore punk rock scene in the early 1980s. Steven promoted shows in Washington, DC, and Paul directed the first music videos for bands like Bad Brains and Gang Green.

The hardcore music scene represents a radical departure from contemporary society. Rejecting the materialism, militarism, and hedonism of the mainstream music scene—and, by extension, modern culture—hardcore music presents an alternative lifestyle rooted in solidarity, equality, and liberty. Indeed, the culture of the hardcore scene approaches a transitive, nomadic model of an anarchistic commune built on resistance as a way of life.

  • Original Flyer for the Last Resort CHAPTER ONE 1977–1979
58 THE WHITE NATIONALIST SKINHEAD MOVEMENT Original flyer for the Last Resort CHAPTER ONE 1977–1979 National Front By the mid-1970s Britain was polarised like never before. The reason for this was the emergence of the National Front. Founded in 1967, the National Front [NF], a right-wing political party, campaigned for an end to ‘coloured’ immigration, the humane repatria- tion of immigrants living in Britain, withdrawal from the European community, and the reintroduction of capital punishment. Even though the NF regarded ‘International Communism as the number one ene- my of civilization’ and ‘International Monopoly Capitalism’ as dangerous an enemy as communism, only one issue was ever likely to arouse the feelings of the masses and that was race. And racial tension was running high because of the large influx of immi- grants from the Commonwealth, which the NF exploited to the full. Indeed, the expul- sion of all Asians with British passports from Uganda by General Idi Amin and their arrival in Britain had ignited widespread popular protests. If ever the political climate was favourable for the growth of an openly racist right-wing party the time was now. The 1973 West Bromwich by-election shocked many when the NF candidate, Martin Webster, managed to poll 16.2 percent of the votes, coming in third and saving his deposit for the first time in the NF’s history. This was a danger sign to the major parties that NF support was on the increase in certain areas, particularly those badly hit by the recession with considerable social problems.

  • New York City Hardcore Punk and the Struggle for Inclusive Space
De Urbanitate. Tales of Urban Lives and Spaces 133 Don’t Forget the Streets: New York City Hardcore Punk and the Struggle for Inclusive Space Alan Parkes History Instructor, Long Beach Community College & California State University, Long Beach [email protected] KEYWORDS: New York City; punk; hardcore; youth crew; subculture; masculinity; straight edge; neoliberalism Mike Ferrero, a self-described “fucked up kid” from a small working class town in Connecticut, recalls his life changing after the first time he encountered hardcore punk in New York City in the early 1980s; “I walked away from my first CBGB’s matinee blown away. I was never going to miss another one of these. I could be half dead, but I’m going to make it to every matinee forever.”1 Hardcore, as the louder, faster, and more politically infused successor to punk, from then on played no small role in Ferrero’s life. It offered him a reprieve from difficulties at home and high school, which he described as a torture chamber. At matinees, he let out the week’s aggression on hardcore’s dancefloor and began to express himself through the creation of his own music. The formation of his band symbolized the actualization of a dream he conjured up to escape the realities of his life. In New York hardcore, bands, only distinct from fans by the instruments in their hands, shouted cries of “unity” amongst kids who wanted something more than the urban decay that surrounded their revered, egalitarian hardcore space. As Ferrero recalls, “All of a sudden I found this group of other fucked up kids, and then I didn’t feel so alone.
