In an address to the people of Chiang Mai, Deputy PM Plodprasop said the people of Phuket’s unwillingness to elect a Pheu Thai Party candidate would cost the island its chance to have an international convention and exhibition center, or ICEC, of the type recently completed in the north. Mr Plodprasop, or anyone else seeking to win friends and influ- ence people, may consider refraining from intentionally insulting any person or constituency; it seldom ends well at election time. The comments were probably intended not as an insult to the people of Phuket, but rather as a way of stirring up support for the Pheu Thai Party in its traditional power base. Nevertheless, as a veteran politician on the national stage, Mr Plodprasop should have known better. We already have an ongoing, deadly insur- gency in the Deep South; do we really need our leaders throwing more fuel on the fire of regional distrust? The Pheu Thai Party’s political opponents, themselves now donning masks, are looking to put a face on the enemy. PM Yingluck, the nation’s first female premier, seems to enjoy a sort of teflon coating that harkens back to the days of US Presi- dent Ronald Reagan. Ready for takeoff, Phuket Spectacular air show and family picnic only two weeks away

THOUSANDS from across Greater Phuket – locals and expats alike – will come out to celebrate the USA’s 237th birthday with the grandest of family picnics and an airshow scheduled for July 6-7 at Phuket’s expansive Airpark in Pa Klok, just east of the Heorine’s Monument. With this year also marking 180 years of official Thailand-USA diplomatic relations, a number of exciting activities are on the cards, with a little bit of something for everyone in the family. In addition to an unprecedented Chili Cook-off, and an American style family picnic complete with live music, and authentic American food and beer offered in a carnival-like atmosphere, there will be a number of exciting activities taking place. The success of the fund raising was helped by Charity Ambassador Krittapas “Krit” Sakdidtanon, who lead a team of volunteers who sought donations during the marathon weekend. The money raised during the mara- thon will contribute to the LPF 2013 target which aims to collect one million baht per year to operate its various charitable programs. Established in 2009, LPF supports educational and social development, marine and natural environmental conservation, and emergency relief. In previous years, athletes from Thailand and all over the world have raised millions of baht to fund several school rebuilding programs through LPIM and the Laguna Phuket triathlon events. Laguna Phuket Foundation’s current initiatives include Laguna Phuket’s “Fully Booked!” Mobile Learning Centre, Survival Swim program, and School Partnership Project components which form the Devel- oping Sustainable Schools umbrella program. Other ongoing initiatives include the Laguna Phuket Community English Language Center and the Sea Turtle Conservation program. – Phuket Gazette
