As you have come to expect, this latest issue will update you on the latest data storage technology – and give you a close look at the real story behind Blu-ray (and PMR) disc production. Our efforts to develop and implement the newest production technology are defined by the fact that “time waits for no one.” Especially for our industry, storage capacity for both optical and hard disks keeps expanding at a breakneck pace, but the time to implement new production solutions is continually shrinking. Being in the forefront of the newest generation of data storage media (the high capacity Blu-ray disc and the PMR-based hard disk formats), Oerlikon has taken great efforts to develop cutting edge solutions by partner with industry leaders to ensure the best production solutions possible. Our future is Blu Oerlikon is firmly in the Blu-ray camp. In 2006, 1/3 of our revenue came from Blu-ray solutions. Since our INDIGO lines – both for single layer and double layer BD formats – are available this year (read about them on pages 16-21), expect even higher share in 2007. Our large base of installed BD lines is key to our future success, as most manufacturers will stay with a reliable supplier once the market chooses a high-density disc format. Despite the delay among consumers due to the ongoing format battle, I am confident that we will have a winner by the end of this year. PMR progress The new PMR technology for hard disks may be an even more revolutionary technology step. Our RACETRACK system (see the story on page 44) – with production records for throughput and yield – represents the optimal solution for high-quality PMR hard disks. With almost 1/3 of the world’s hard disks already produced on Oerlikon equipment, we expect great things from this solution as well. 2007 promises to be a year of great changes – and great opportunities. All of the technology partners I have recently spoken to – and our customers – are optimistic about growth and the promise of the new storage technologies. I look forward to taking advantage of the future with you! Last year’s name change was more than cosmetic. The Oerlikon Balzers Coating segment now includes not only our data storage activities, but also the Solar, Wafer Processing, and Balzers Tool Coating business units, bringing our considerable thin film know-how into a single “coating powerhouse.” Unifying these business units under a single name also points out the strategic importance of diversification for Oerlikon. “This is important to help us minimize business risks,” explains Sven E. OTO219_p16_21_BD_Licensing 6/4/09 13:51 Page 16 technology unwieldy or fail to fully take into account the BD production process. Finally, there is the cost, with cumulative licensing fees accounting for a substantial proportion of a BD disc’s manufacturing cost. BEFORE A CONTENT HOLDER CAN PUT CONTENT onto a BD disc and get it replicated, the holder needs to be licensed by the BDA licence entity. The BDA’s licensing activities include distributing the BD format books, logo guide and data, and issuing a compliance certification after a BD disc has undergone a stiff verification and testing process. There are several elements to the BD licensing scheme. Content holders, distributors and providers wanting to put content onto BD must take out a Content Participant Agreement, which costs $3,000 a year and runs for five years. There’s also a ‘light’ version that costs $500 a year and also runs for five years. There is no fee for the use of a Logo Licence Agreement, and there is an optional BD-Live Logo and Online Certificate Issuance Agreement, which incurs no charge, although there is a fee of $1,000 per private key. There are other BD licensing obligations. Disc replicators need to take out a BD-ROM mark interim agreement with Sony, Philips or Panasonic, while content providers must take out an AACS licence (see table, page 18). There’s also the option of taking out a BD+ licence for enhanced copy protection available from BD+ Technologies. Eric Carson, business unit manager, media manufacturing solutions, DCA, says:“The ROM mark is a nightmare – it’s the biggest pain point.

Press Release DaTABANK reads BD-ROM MARK Reutte, Austria, December 2006: DaTARIUS flagship, the DaTABANK, in itself a reference tester for electrical signals, now also acts as a BD-ROM Mark Analyzer for the BDA/Philips’ Blu-ray Discs. BD-ROM Mark disc technology was developed by PHILIPS, Sony and Panasonic. The BD-ROM Mark technology is part of the content protection method developed by AACS for Blu-ray, and DaTARIUS systems equipped with the Pit O´Resc board that enables the DaTABANK to act as a BD-ROM Mark Analyzer. “Both BD stamper and replica can be analyzed to define whether the ROM Mark is correctly inserted,” says Dr. Andrew Dumbill, CTO DaTARIUS Group. The BD-ROM Mark is a physical mark put on the master during the encoding, and which is replicated on every disc made from that master. The BD-ROM Mark enables heavy encryption and is implemented specifically such that it is impossible to replicate or copy it. BD-ROM players are equipped with a BD-ROM detector that will only allow the playback of a disc if a Mark is found and correctly decrypted. “Reliable support for BD-ROM Mark verification is essential to enable flawless quality of Blu-ray Discs in the consumer market,” says Rob Woudenberg from Philips. More information about the BD-ROM Marks can be found on www.licensing.philips.com Direct link About DaTARIUS Technologies GmbH The DaTARIUS Group is a global company focused on providing solutions throughout the optical media manufacturing industries. DaTARIUS developed the first commercial CD test system and has over 20 years’ experience in the manufacture and distribution of equipment for inspecting, measuring and optimizing at every stage of the optical media manufacturing process.
