It must therefore be emphasized that this information is based on preliminary findings from the May 2011 Dominica Population and Housing Census. It is not final information and is subject to slight changes after processing of final Census data. This report also includes census data from 1981 and other demographic trends over the last ten years. Email: [email protected] ramosaaron~hotmail.com Islands at the Crossroads: Political Dilemmas of the Modern Colonies of the Caribbean Aaron Gamaliel Ramos The colonies that remain in the Caribbean stand at their second historical crossroads since becoming residues of the decolonization process underwent after the end of World War 2. The end of the Cold War, the reordering of the world of nations, and increasing unconformity with existing colonial arrangements have created new dilemmas for both metropolitan and colonial actors in the remaining colonial territories of the Caribbean. Currently there are 12 colonies in the region which are the remains of the decolonization process that took place after World War 11.: three French Departements d'Outre Mer: Guadeloupe, Martinique, and Guyane; the British dependencies of Anguilla, Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Montserrat, Turks & Caicos; the Dutch colonial system composed of Aruba and a the Dutch Antilles (which are formed by the island of Cura~ao, Bonaire, Sint Maarten, Sint Eustatius, and Saba); and two territories of the United States: Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands. The political re-arrangements in the colonial structures that were made after World War 2 were largely influenced by a twofold process. For one, the decolonization process in general revealed the precarious conditions of Old World colonial powers after the war and the strength of Caribbean nationalism. -

When a map, drawing or chart, etc., is part of the material being photo graphed the photographer has followed a definite method in "sectioning" the material. It is customary to begin filming at the upper left hand corner of a large sheet and to continue from left to right in equal sections with small overlaps. If necessary, sectioning is continued again—beginning below the first row and continuing on until complete. -

Chairperson Dr. Victor Bailey Date approved: April 6, 2012 iii ABSTRACT Many observers of British national identity assume that decolonization presaged a crisis in the meaning of Britishness. The rise of the new imperial history, which contends Empire was central to Britishness, has only strengthened faith in this assumption, yet few historians have explored the actual connections between end of empire and British national identity. This project examines just this assumption by studying the final moments of decolonization in Africa between 1959 and 1963. Debates in the popular political culture and media demonstrate the extent to which British identity and meanings of Britishness on the world stage intertwined with the process of decolonization. A discursive tradition characterized as the “Whiggish vision,” in the words of historian Wm. Roger Louis, emerged most pronounced in this era. This vision, developed over the centuries of Britain imagining its Empire, posited that the British Empire was a benign, liberalizing force in the world and forecasted a teleology in which Empire would peacefully transform into a free, associative Commonwealth of Nations. -

Abstract This thesis is a history of humanitarian non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in Britain, between 1942 and 1985. Specifically, it is focused upon the group of leading agencies linked to the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC), an umbrella body for joint emergency fundraising established in the 1960s. The thesis explores the role of these NGOs in building up an expansive and technocratic disaster relief industry in Britain, in which they were embedded as instruments for the delivery of humanitarian aid. This was problematic, as many principal aid agencies also wished to move away from short-term disaster relief, to focus upon political advocacy connected to international development instead. It is argued that, despite this increasing political focus, humanitarian NGOs were consistently brought back to emergency relief by the power of television, the lack of public support for development, and the interventions of the British government. -
