Since our launch in 1981, there has been proliferation of platforms, channels and catch-up services. In recent years, more people have started to watch television and video content distributed through the internet. Project Dovetail is at the heart of our development strategy. Its premise is that BARB’s services need to harness the strengths of two complementary data sources. - BARB’s panel of 5,100 homes provides representative viewing information that delivers programme reach, demographic viewing profiles and measurement of viewers per screen. - Device-based data from web servers provides granular evidence of how online TV is being watched. The TV Player Report is the first stage of Project Dovetail.

[email protected] Please refer to slide 6 for guide footnotes. 2 Monthly summary – November 2010 • In total BBC iPlayer received 141 million requests for TV and radio programmes in November, including both online platforms and devices and BBC iPlayer on Virgin Media TV. This was a month-on-month increase of 1%, with requests up 32% year-on-year, setting another new monthly record for the service. • Continuing autumn titles contributed to another record-breaking month for TV requests, with three episodes of The Apprentice topping the list. Comedy continued to perform well, in particular Russell Howard’s Good News and The Trip, while Merlin, Spooks and Lip Service contributed to a strong month for drama. • The Unbelievable Truth was the most requested radio programme, with The News Quiz and The Chris Moyles Show also popular. It was also a strong month for sport coverage on 5 Live with the football Premier League, and the Haye v Harrison boxing match. • Live TV viewing via the BBC iPlayer increased in November to make up 13% of all requests, boosted by Children In Need and sport coverage. Live radio also grew slightly. Consistent with previous months: • The profile of BBC iPlayer users is evening out over time in terms of male/female ratio, but remains strongly under-55 in terms of age, which is younger than the typical TV viewer or radio listener’s profile. • BBC iPlayer is used for TV at roughly the same time of day as linear TV viewing, although there is proportionally more daytime and late-peak use.

Championing excellence and diversity in broadcasting Founded in 1983 by Jocelyn Hay CBE The Old Rectory Business Centre Springhead Road, Northfleet Kent, DA11 8HN Tel: 01474 338716 email: [email protected] VLV: www.vlv.org.uk RESPONSE BY THE VOICE OF THE LISTENER & VIEWER TO THE BBC CONSULTION A NEW BBC THREE CHANNEL: PUBLIC INTEREST TEST CONSULTATION April 2021 INFORMATION ABOUT THE VLV 1. The Voice of the Listener & Viewer (VLV) is an independent, not for profit membership-based charity, free from political and sectarian affiliations. VLV supports high quality broadcasting which maintains the democratic and cultural traditions of the UK. We support the independence and integrity of the BBC and encourage work which demonstrates commitment to the principles of public service broadcasting (PSB). VLV is a charitable company limited by guarantee (registered in England and Wales No 4407712 - Charity No 1152136). INTRODUCTION 2. VLV welcomes the opportunity to respond to this consultation on restoring BBC Three as a broadcast channel. 3. VLV welcomes the proposals set out in the consultation document, however we have a concern that these proposals abandon a highly valuable aspect of BBC Three’s programming – international content which fulfils Purpose 1 of the Charter. 4. In 2015 VLV opposed the closure of BBC Three as a broadcast channel because we believed this would limit the reach and impact of its content and undermine the BBC’s ability to engage fully with younger audiences. 5. VLV therefore welcomes the proposal to reinstate the BBC Three broadcast channel, while continuing to provide content on the iPlayer because this will help it better engage the young adult audience.
