There is a story behind many of our street names. This 1882 map has some street names that the current generation of Pottonians would be unfamiliar with. If an ancestor had been asked the directions from the Rose & Crown to the Royal Oak via the Methodist Chapel they might have said “ just up Bull Street and turn left into Back Street past the Chapel and it’s on the opposite side of Moon’s Corner”. Todays local would go up Bull Street and pass along Chapel Street past the Salvation Army Barracks before crossing over the road (with luck due to the traffic) to Biggleswade Road. Potton. The Census returns are a good source of information about the street names of past times. Horslow Street appeared as Ostler Street in a Victorian Census and was spotted in recent times (as shown by the photograph above) with another spelling of its name! The Society has been asked over the years since its formation in 1977 to suggest suitable names for streets in new developments and a number of its original members now have street names in memory of their contribution to local life. Was there a Mr Moon who lived there or had a small shop? The Chairman spoke about a recent posting on the We Love Potton facebook about the Cemetery. A discussion with regards to grass cutting and bare earth in the Cemetery. It was suggested that grass cutting is undertaken in the Cemetery in advance of Mother’s Day and other significant events and signage is installed fore bare earth. The Chairman then spoke about a comment made in the same posting with regards “…. all they are interested in is lining their own pockets.”. The Chairman advised this is a serious accusation about town cllrs and staff and the comment is completely ill informed and libellous.

    Investigating your Heritage POTTON MARKET SQUARE WALK Peter Ibbett When was the first market held at Potton? How old are its buildings? Where did the design of the Clock House come from? Introduction ‘There is as much pleasure to be had in the chamber music of Bedfordshire or Rutland; perhaps, one might say a more sophisticated pleasure in discovering the essence of these simpler and smaller landscapes.’ W.G Hoskins. ‘The Making of the English Landscape’ 1955. This leaflet is intended to provide an introduction to Potton Market Square. It asks the visitor to take their time and to ask themselves questions about what they see around them. You could devote at least half a day to appreciating the townscape that previous generations have bequeathed and which the present is actively modifying for future Pottonians. It is intended to supplement material that is still in print and can be obtained from the Potton History Society or in the town. Potton is an ancient market town, with population of nearly 5,000, covering 2,671 acres of boulder clay and greensand. Its written history can be traced back to the 10 th century through a grant of land to Ramsey Abbey. At the time of the Doomsday Book Countess Judith, niece of William the Conqueror, held the manor of Potton. By 1501, the Burgoyne family of neighbouring Sutton controlled Potton market, and later bought the estate. Admiral the Hon John Byng at Southill was the next owner in 1752. From 1795 to 1917, the Whitbread family of Southill were Lords of the Manor.
