I extend my thanks and praise to your Committee who have volunteered their time to shoulder the burden of seeing through an enormous amount of change off the 2 The President’s Report park. The Bears have a talented and diverse Committee who juggle their professional work responsibilities, Committee roles and in many instances playing duties to selflessly contribute to the good management of the Bears. The 2015-16 audited accounts show a deficit of $42,051 and cash at bank balance of $33,471. The financial result was within expectations and reflected the need for the Bears to invest in equipment, clothing and pre-season indoor training facility hire. Running a Premier grade club is an expensive endeavour and raising funds to keep teams on the oval is a never ending exercise. The Bears are in a sound financial position but will need to improve our fundraising efforts in the coming seasons. I extend my sincere thanks to our sponsors without whom we could not function. David Hill and his team at Raine & Horne Crows Nest have been vital supporters of the Bears and we are proud to wear his brand on our apparel from our under 9s through to our 1st Grade. Likewise Patrick Gallagher and his team at the Union Hotel, North Sydney have been generous hosts for many of our functions and game day de-briefs and his onging financial support is most appreciated. We have been fortunate to attract new sponsors this season including Harry Solomon and his team at Kingsgrove Sports, the CBA North Sydney and Raymond Chen and team at Physio4All in North Sydney. The Bears are fortunate also to have the excellent services of the North Sydney Council grounds staff who have provided high quality practice and playing fields for our teams over the course of the season. The loss of access to North Sydney Oval due to renovation and the winning positions in consecutive one day and two-day impacts of a wet season placed a strain on the ground (outright) matches mid season forgoing 14 competition staff. To their credit we lost minimal access to facilities. points. I am confident our young squad will learn from We look forward to the new and improved facilities defeats like these and will become tougher competitors both at Bon Andrews and North Sydney No.1 and will in 2016-17. continue to work with Council on upgrading our facilities It was equally true that our 1st grade team (18th in as and when required. Our longer term goal is to secure McDonald’s Belvidere Cup) was most unfortunate not to an indoor facility on the lower North Shore and we will record victories against Sydney University (9 run loss on continue to draw upon the expertise of Cricket NSW in Duckworth-Lewis), Penrith (2 run loss), Eastern Suburbs this endeavour. The Bears would put a completely different perspective on the finished 20th in the Club Championship (18th in 2014- 2015-16 season. 15). The silver lining to this report however is that the I extend my thanks to both Jaik Mickleburgh our 1st results have not been for want of effort and in many grade captain and Glenn Aitkin who deputised for Jaik in of the games we lost the vital moments in battle that his absences. I am proud to announce that our inaugural Award I noted from the outset of my report the positive steps winners in 2015-16 are: made by your Committee to invest in coaching and we • Tim Reynolds (NSW U15s) are grateful for the commitment and efforts of our Head • Dhruva Thorat (NSW U15s); and Coach Marty ‘Moose’ Haywood. Marty has been ably supported through the season by former Australian • Will Graham (NSW Schoolboys) international who has worked closely I anticipate that given the depth of our junior talent with our spinners in particular and English county pool that the President’s Scholarship Award winners cricket professional Jaik Mickleburgh who coached our will become an even greater alumni which can only be a Poidevin-Gray under 21s team. Marty has also been good thing for the Bears. instrumental in attracting specialist coaches such as former New Zealand international cricketer Ian Butler David Graham and former Australian ‘A’ player Mark Atkinson to fine President NSDCC tune our and wicket-keeping skills. His support in extending our coaching expertise to our junior franchise is also a great step in the right direction which the Bears can build on in 2016-17. Our 2016-17 coaching plans with respect to our juniors are ambitious as we endeavour to integrate more closely with our junior franchise. In 2015-16 our coaching staff have provided specialist coaching to our junior boys and girls teams. Our support also included a ‘coach-the-coaches’ program to assist the dads and mums in our community coach their children’s teams. This is an initiative that I have personally been involved in and I look forward to seeing the fruits of this labour in our junior team results in the years to come. In September 2015 we once again conducted our junior cricket clinic and I am pleased to report a 50% increase in participation. We plan to roll out even more holiday opportunities in 2016-17. Our involvement with the juniors is also financial and I am pleased to report that the NSDCC has been able to secure sponsorship in cash and equipment of $6,000 for our juniors during the 2015-16 season. In closing I am delighted to announce that in 2015-16 I have introduced the President’s Scholarship Award initiative. The President’s Scholarship Award is a monetary award to those members who achieve NSW State cricket representative caps. The Scholarship is an acknowledgement that our high achievers are often unable to commit to part time and casual work whilst they are studying due to the intense time commitments 4 Highlights Performance Highlights Whilst victories in the Premier Grade competition have There have been some outstanding individual proven elusive for the Bears in 2015-16 there remains a performances that are worthy of mention. A larger base of junior cricket players will provide a stronger feeder pool for the Premier Grade Cricket teams to draw from in future seasons. A highlight in our junior cricket has been the introduction of an under 13s girls cricket team who have grown in confidence and skill level under the patient guidance of coach and junior section President Karl Riseborough. The Premier Grade coaching staff are proud of their contributions to our inaugural girls team and we look forward to helping them develop in the coming seasons.

The Junior Club commenced the T20 Blast format in collaboration with the North Shore Junior Cricket Association and Cricket NSW, a new program designed to give more game time to those too young or not ready for the longer game format in Under 9’s upwards. During last season it was a struggle to get a full team of eight players together. This season however, we had enough registered players to fill just short of two teams. It is expected that we will continue to see this trend next year, in line with Cricket NSW’s projections and we estimate the Club will have teams spanning over the two age groups, Under 13’s and Under 17’s. This is something that is embraced and encouraged, as we continue to develop a community driven Club. On a final note, Tony Greenwood has stepped down as President after 10 plus years involvement with the Junior Club.
