Evelyn Herlitius Held Her First Lied Recital in 2011 at the Dresden Semperoper

Saverio Clemente Andrea De Amici Luca Targetti Evelyn Herlitzius studied at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Hamburg and had her first engagements in Flensburg, Saarbrücken and Karlsruhe. Since her debut at the Dresden State Opera in 1997 as Leonore in Fidelio, she has been regularly invited back, interpreting Elisabeth and Venus in Tannhäuser, the title roles in Jenufa and Salome, Kundry in Parsifal, Färberin in Die Frau ohne Schatten and Jeanne in Die Teufel von Loudon. She has performed with all the major opera companies throughout Europe and Japan, including Berlin, Hamburg, Stuttgart and Vienna State Operas, the Deutsche Oper Berlin (complete Ring Cycle in 2010), De Nederlandse Opera, Teatro alla Scala in Milan (Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk/Katerina Izmaylova and Wozzeck/Marie), Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona (Die Walküre/Brünnhilde opposite Plácido Domingo and Parsifal/Kundry in 2011) and Teatro de la Maestranza in Seville, to name but a few. Recently she sang Turandot in Rome. She also enjoys a busy concert career. Sir Simon Rattle engaged her for Schönberg's Erwartung with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra for concerts in Berlin and New York in 2009 and for Die Walküre (Brünnhilde) in 2012. Pierre Boulez invited her to sing the Glagolitic Mass with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra in March 2010. She also Evelyn Herlitius held her first Lied recital in 2011 at the Dresden Semperoper. Soprano After her debut at the Bayreuth Festival in 2002 as Brünnhilde, Ms. Herlitzius was invited back for: Ring Cycle in 2003 and 2004; Parsifal (Kundry) in 2006 and 2007; and a new production of Lohengrin (Ortrud) in 2010. She also performed in a new production of Die Frau ohne Schatten (Färberin) at the 2011 Salzburg Festival. She has collaborated with numerous prestigious conductors and stage directors, including Sir Georg Solti, Giuseppe Sinopoli, Daniele Gatti, Adam Fischer, Christian Thielemann, Fabio Luisi, Kent Nagano, Semyon Bychkov, Willy Decker, Jürgen Flimm, Andreas Homoki, Harry Kupfer, Nikolaus Lehnhoff, Christof Loy, Hans Neuenfels and Christoph Schlingensief. Ms. Herlitzius was awarded, among others, the title of Kammersängerin in 2002, Christel-Goltz Prize in 1999 and the Deutsche Theaterpreis Faust in 2006. Publicity photo: the housewife diva, 3 July 1965 (Alamy) i Abstract The Australian soprano Marie Collier (1927-1971) is generally remembered for two things: for her performance of the title role in Puccini’s Tosca, especially when she replaced the controversial singer Maria Callas at late notice in 1965; and her tragic death in a fall from a window at the age of forty-four. The focus on Tosca, and the mythology that has grown around the manner of her death, have obscured Collier’s considerable achievements. She sang traditional repertoire with great success in the major opera houses of Europe, North and South America and Australia, and became celebrated for her pioneering performances of twentieth-century works now regularly performed alongside the traditional canon. Collier’s experiences reveal much about post-World War II Australian identity and cultural values, about the ways in which the making of opera changed throughout the world in the 1950s and 1960s, and how women negotiated their changing status and prospects through that period. She exercised her profession in an era when the opera industry became globalised, creating and controlling an image of herself as the ‘housewife-diva’, maintaining her identity as an Australian artist on the international scene, and developing a successful career at the highest level of her artform while creating a fulfilling home life. This study considers the circumstances and mythology of Marie Collier’s death, but more importantly shows her as a woman of the mid-twentieth century navigating the professional and personal spheres to achieve her vision of a life that included art, work and family.

NEWSLETTER of The American Handel Society Volume XVIII, Number 1 April 2003 A PILGRIMAGE TO IOWA As I sat in the United Airways terminal of O’Hare International Airport, waiting for the recently bankrupt carrier to locate and then install an electric starter for the no. 2 engine, my mind kept returning to David Lodge’s description of the modern academic conference. In Small World (required airport reading for any twenty-first century academic), Lodge writes: “The modern conference resembles the pilgrimage of medieval Christendom in that it allows the participants to indulge themselves in all the pleasures and diversions of travel while appearing to be austerely bent on self-improvement.” He continues by listing the “penitential exercises” which normally accompany the enterprise, though, oddly enough, he omits airport delays. To be sure, the companionship in the terminal (which included nearly a dozen conferees) was anything but penitential, still, I could not help wondering if the delay was prophecy or merely a glitch. The Maryland Handel Festival was a tough act to follow and I, and perhaps others, were apprehensive about whether Handel in Iowa would live up to the high standards set by its august predecessor. In one way the comparison is inappropriate. By the time I started attending the Maryland conference (in the early ‘90’s), it was a first-rate operation, a Cadillac among festivals. Comparing a one-year event with a two-decade institution is unfair, though I am sure in the minds of many it was inevitable. Since that time she has sung major roles in the great opera houses of the world, in the major concert halls and with the world's leading orchestras. Abbie Furmansky
Abbie Furmansky American soprano Abbie Furmansky came to prominence while performing as an ensemble member at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, where she quickly established herself in the lyric repertoire. She is especially noted for her riveting stage presence, rich vocal timbre, musicality and expansive voice. She has worked with well-known conductors such as Kent Nagano, Ingo Metzmacher, Christopher Hogwood, John Nelson, Christian Thielemann and Edo de Waart. Throughout Europe and in the USA, she appeared with the German Symphony Orchestra, the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Radio Orchestra, and the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra, among many others. Further engagements led her to opera houses such as the New York City Opera, Canadian Opera Company, Washington National Opera, Los Angeles Opera, Bayerische Staatsoper, Oper Frankfurt, de Nederlandse Opera and the Baden-Baden Festival. Editorial 3 Dr. Ulrike Hessler, Intendantin Editorial VERFÜHRUNG IN VIELEN VARIATIONEN Eine konzertante Aufführung von Jaromír Weinbergers »Švanda dudák / Schwanda, der Dudelsackpfeifer« unter der Leitung von Wolfgang Sawallisch Anfang der 1990er Jahre im Münchner Herkulessaal hinterließ bei mir einen nachhaltigen Eindruck: eine volkstümliche Oper im besten Sinn, voller Humor, glänzend instrumentiert. Als wir in Dresden über den Spielplan disku- tierten, zeigte sich Operndirektor Eytan Pessen genauso angetan von einer szenischen Aufführung des Werkes in Augsburg. Auch im Dresdner Spielplan hat »Schwanda, der Dudelsackpfeifer« Spuren hinterlassen: Nach ihrer Uraufführung in Prag 1927 ging die Oper förmlich um die Welt, sie wurde in 17 Sprachen übersetzt. 1930 fand die Dresdner Erstaufführung statt, 1931 Wir lassen Kinder erreichte sie die New Yorker Met. Nachdem die Nazis den jüdischen Komponisten ins amerikanische Exil vertrieben hatten, verschwand »Schwanda« allmählich von den internationalen Spielplänen, der Komponist geriet in Vergessenheit, vor allem auch in seiner tschechischen Heimat. In Dresden gab es was erleben! allerdings bereits 1950 eine Produktion mit Karl Paul in der Titel- partie. Schon unsere Ankündigung, das Werk in einer Neu- inszenierung zu präsentieren, stieß auf großes Interesse: Der MDR wird am 7. Esto es para el mundo de la ópera lo que el Sida para el cuerpo humano. Es deber del regidor contar clara y comprensible, al público de hoy, la obra creada por el autor. Cuando lo cuenta de manera incomprensible, si cabe más incomprensible que la pieza misma, ha fracasado. Cuando cuenta la obra de manera diferente a como el autor la ha previsto – cuando según su antojo cambia el contenido de la pieza – engaña al público y este tiene derecho a pedir que le devuelvan el dinero de la entrada. La libertad artística del regidor, en su proyecto visual, tiene los mismos límites que tiene el director de orquesta ante la música. La puesta en escena ha tenido siempre una gran importancia en la historia de la Ópera. Hoy esto es ignorado por los regidores y además, si lo saben, no les importa nada en absoluto. ¿Cómo se logra a través del decorado que sean comprensibles las diferentes fases de la acción? ¿Cómo se crean entradas impresionantes? ¿Cómo se ilumina de manera que la mujer aparezca bella? ¿Dónde se coloca un cantante para que su voz suene lo mejor posible? Es peligroso que el regidor sea quien reparta los papeles, cosa frecuente hoy en día, cuando lo mejor es que sea el director de orquesta quien los escoja.
