CARRINGTON, JR. One of the most productive and complex of the major American writers, William Dean Howells presents many aspects to his biogra phers and critics — novelist, playwright, liter ary critic, editor, literary businessman, and Christian Socialist. Mr. Carrington chooses Howells the novelist as the subject of this penetrating examination of the complex relationships of theme, subject, technique, and form in the world of Howells fiction. He attempts to answer such questions as, What happens if we look at the novels of Howells with the irreducible minimum of exter nal reference and examine them for meaning? What do their structures tell us? What are their characteristic elements? Is there significance in the use of these elements? In the frequency of their use? In the patterns of their use? Howells was one of the pioneers of a literary movement in American literature known as realism. Like all pioneers, he has been highly praised and adversely criticized. It is noteworthy that these ap¬ praisals have often been made without due regard to Howells’ creed, and that many of the studies of his novels have been in the nature of compara¬ tive studies, with varied concepts of realism as criteria, rather than Howells' own doctrine of realism. Such practices in the evaluation of ones works without examining the theory that underlies them often leads to faulty criticism. Realizing this, the writer of this thesis purposes to evaluate Howells’ fictional practices in the light of his literary theory. Of the many studies made of Howells, the writer is aware of only three detailed ones. Delmar Gross Cooke, Oscar W. Firkins, and Alexander Harvey are the scholars who made these. Each of their works is entitled William Dean Howells. In most anthologies and all histories of American literature there is a discussion of Hov/ells' realism. Many contributions of this nature have been made to periodicals. However, with the exception of the study made by Russell Blankenship, ^ they all fall into the category of comparative stud¬ ies. W. D. HOWELLS William Dean Howells, author, editor, and critic was born on March 1, 1837 in Martinsville, now Martin’s Ferry, Ohio. The son of a printer, Howells began working as a typesetter and a printer’s apprentice before serving a term as city editor of the Ohio State Journal in 1858. He published poems, stories and reviews in Atlantic Monthly and other magazines, and wrote for the Cincinnati Gazette and The Sentinel. He was awarded the post of U.S. Consul to Venice in 1861 for his service to the Lincoln presidential campaign. After leaving Venice, Howells became assistant editor (1866-1871) and then editor (1871-1888) of the Atlantic Monthly. Although he wrote over a hundred books in various genres, including poems, literary criticism, plays, memoirs, and travel narratives, Howells is best known for his realistic fiction, including A Modern Stance (1881). Howells remained proud of his Ohio roots throughout his life. In the latter part of his career, he drew increasingly on life in Ohio in his autobiographic works (A Boy’s Town, 1890) and his novels (The Kentons, 1903). A staunch critic of racial intolerance, Howells was a founding member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) in 1909. INTRODUCTION: A MIRROR IN THE ROADWAY Once there was a common assumption that along with everything else that gave meaning to literature—the mastery of language and form, the personal- ity of the author, the moral authority, the degree of originality, the reactions of the reader—hardly anything could be more central to it than the text’s inter- play with the “real world.” Literature, especially fiction, was unapologetically about the life we live outside of literature, the social life, the emotional life, the physical life, the specific sense of time and place. This was especially true after the growth of literary realism in England in the eighteenth century with Defoe and Richardson; in France in the early nineteenth century with Stend- hal and Balzac; in Russia at midcentury with Tolstoy; in England again with George Eliot, Dickens, and Trollope; and finally in America with Mark Twain, Henry James, and William Dean Howells, who became the tireless promoter of a whole school of younger realists. Much as we may still enjoy their work as effective storytelling, readily adaptable to other media, the main assumptions of these writers about the novel and the world around it are now completely out of fashion. That is, everywhere except among ordinary readers. Since the modernist period and especially in the last thirty years, a tremendous gap has opened up between how most readers read, if they still read at all, and how critics read, or how they theorize about reading. -

Surrogate Scriptures: American Christian Bestsellers and the Bible, 1850-1900 DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By John Thomas Acker Graduate Program in English The Ohio State University 2017 Dissertation Committee: Dr. Jared Gardner, Advisor Dr. Elizabeth Hewitt Dr. Hannibal Hamlin Copyrighted by John Thomas Acker 2017 Abstract This dissertation examines four bestselling Christian novels published in the United States between 1850 and 1900: Uncle Tom’s Cabin (1852) by Harriet Beecher Stowe, The Gates Ajar (1868) by Elizabeth Stuart Phelps, Ben-Hur (1880) by Lew Wallace, and In His Steps (1896) by Charles Sheldon. These four books reached millions of readers in a time when many Christians refused to read novels at all, helping to launch what is today a $4B Christian merchandise industry. More importantly, amid what Nathan Hatch has called the “democratization of American Christianity,” popular Christian novels offered a measure of cultural unity, despite splintering churches and increasing skepticism. To explain these novels’ literary popularity and religious impact, I approach them as what I call “surrogate Scriptures.” Just as surrogates are both representatives and substitutes, in a sense these novels can both replace the Bible and point readers back to it. All four novels confirm the Bible’s centrality and authority in Christian theology and practice, but they also showcase changing attitudes toward reading, understanding, interpreting, and applying Biblical content. The four novelists I study here stake out very ii different positions on these issues, but they all contribute to a vibrant and fascinating Christian literary culture. -

‘Humanitas et Ratio - Reflections of Ludwig Edelstein’s life and work in his extant epistolary network’ Fiona Jade Howarth Thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy School of History, Classics and Archaeology Newcastle University February 2015 Abstract This thesis produces an in-depth study of Ludwig Edelstein’s life and work enabled by the use of his correspondence read in the light of his ample scholarly output. Ludwig Edelstein (1902-1965) was an important scholar in the fields of the history of ancient medicine and science, classics, and philosophy, yet his life has not been accorded the interest it merits. This thesis will be the first extensive exploration of the entanglement of Edelstein’s bion and ergon. It will demonstrate the importance of considering life and work within the same sphere. Furthermore, it will underline the value of using correspondence for historiography and the richness of information a biographical study can provide, strengthening the case for more investigations of this kind. The thesis adopts a thematic approach and each chapter will explore Edelstein in a different role; as a dissenter, friend, collaborator, scholar, and teacher. The combined study of Edelstein’s correspondence alongside his published work allows for a more complete understanding of Edelstein’s legacy than has been available thus far. However, Edelstein’s life cannot be separated from its context, and so the thesis will also provide valuable information on a number of other areas including, but not limited to, the history of the disciplines he worked in, the intellectual milieu he was a part of, the ‘red scare’ at American universities, humanist ideals of education, and, via the first portrayal of his wife ever written, the position of female scholars in the first half of the twentieth century.
