Current biogeographic understanding, however, is limited by the lack of modern genetic samples for comparative analyses from most of these islands, and conservation efforts are hampered by the paucity of recent information from small islands peripheral to major, more commonly visited islands. In November and December 2016, we visited Maratua, an oceanic coral atoll 50 km east of Borneo, and Bawean, a volcanic island on the Sunda continental shelf 150 km north of Java, to survey birds and collect specimens for morphological and genetic analysis. We detected many of the birds on Maratua’s historical lists and added several new resident and migratory species. Notably, we did not detect the Maratua White-rumped Shama (Copsychus malabaricus barbouri). On Bawean, we found the forests to be nearly silent and detected remarkably few resident land-bird species overall. The severe population reduction of C. m. barbouri on Maratua and the drastic reduction of forest birds on Bawean probably result from overexploitation by the cage-bird trade in the first case and a combination of the cage-bird trade and pellet-gun hunting in the second. -

Just 72 wild Javan rhino (Rhinoceros sondaicus) remain on the planet, all located in their last stronghold in Ujung Kulon National Park (UKNP), West Java, Indonesia. Javan rhinos need to wallow regularly throughout the year, yet the role wallows play in their behaviour and the importance to the species remains little understood. In this study, we identified, mapped and studied 35 wallows in eastern UKNP, where rhinos were active. We spatially mapped and recorded each wallow’s characteristics. We examined rhino wallowing behaviour using 392 remote camera trap videos, taken across UKNP during a five-year study from 2011 to 2016. We identified and categorised eight behavioural patterns at and near wallows related to rhino daily activities and found that wallows have several key features for the Javan rhinos. Findings revealed that Javan rhinos, who construct the wallows themselves, choose sites with 75% shade cover and often at an elevation. Analysis of the rhino calls from camera trap videos taken at and near wallows, identify seven vocalisation descriptors with accompanying sonograms, a first for this rare and shy rainforest species. -

Bali Myna Bali Myna (Starling) by Dennis Braddy Tour Summary… This short but extremely productive and varied tour, covering a fine selection of hand-picked “top birding sites and destinations” throughout Western Indonesia was an immense success, once again and was an absolute joy to lead due to our enthusiastic, fun and very good-natured group. Our quick-fire, two-week tour of western Indonesia, kicked off in Denpasar, on the island of Bali where we all met up at the Harris Hotel for an introductory dinner and flight the following morning to the island of Flores, situated in Nusa Tenggara (The Lesser Sundas), a chain of islands running mostly east/west to the east of Wallace’s line, therefore having a distinctly Australasian flair about their avifauna. After arriving in the large, coastal town of Labuan Bajo, the gateway to the popular and famous Komodo Island, we boarded our minibus and began the windy drive east, up into the hills, towards our first biding locality of the tour, the forest reserve of Puarlolo. This small reserve was initially set aside to protect the endemic and highly threatened Flores Monarch that was only discovered from this area as recently as 1971 and is still only known from a few scattered localities in the sub-montane forest on Flores. -

UNTUK KAJIAN BIODIVERSITI BANDAR DI PUTRAJAYA LAPORAN INVENTORI HIDUPAN LIAR PUTRAJAYA 2019 JABATAN PERLINDUNGAN HIDUPAN LIAR DAN TAMAN NEGARA SEMENANJUNG MALAYSIA MAC-MEI 2019 RUMUSAN Pengenalan satu siri program inventori hidupan liar telah dijalankan di Putrajaya pada Mac- Mei 2019 dengan bertujuan mengemaskini profil hidupan liar untuk perancangan dan pengurusan hidupan liar di Putrajaya demi kesejahteraan dan konservasi biodiversiti bandar Putrajaya dan penduduk setempatnya. Methodologi Cara pencerapan mengikut SOP dan Manual Inventori PERHILITAN: i. pemerhatian secara langsung dan tidak langsung (sounds, signs & footprints); ii. aktiviti pencarian aktif; iii. pemasangan perangkap mengikut sasaran kumpulan; iv. pengumpulan data sekunder melalui perbualan dengan warga setempat. Perangkap mamalia yang digunakan termasuklah harp trap, mist net, sangkar perangkap dan perangkap kamera; perangkap jaring dan sangkar perangkap bagi reptilia dan pitfall untuk amfibia. Hasil Sebanyak 23 spesies mamalia, 99 spesies burung, 8 spesies reptilia dan 7 spesies katak telah direkod untuk kajian ini, di mana 12 spesies mamalia, 39 spesies burung dan 2 spesies reptilia adalah rekod baru untuk Putrajaya. Penemuan ini menjadikan senarai semak hidupan liar Putrajaya telah meningkat kepada 37 spesies untuk mamalia; 142 spesies untuk burung; 19 spesies untuk reptilia dan 14 spesies untuk katak. Perbincangan Belukar di tepi jalan merupakan habitat utama bagi mamalia (55% - non-volan dan 31% - volan). Bulan April adalah musim pembiakan untuk spesies kelawar buah (Pteropodidae) di Putrajaya (mengandung – 19.0%; menyusu – 21.4%). Pemakanan hidupan liar yang mengamalkan frugivorous atau omnivorous di Putrajaya amat bergantung kepada kelapa sawit termasuk kelawar buah, burung residen dan burung hijrah pada waktu bukan musim berbuah. Penemuan kesan kelongsong peluru, jerat dan aktiviti memburu di bahagian selatan Putrajaya (Presint 5 dan 20) menunjukkan bahawa kawasan ini telah menjadi ‘hot spot’ pemburuan haram bagi spesies ayam hutan. -

Birds are the most conspicuous and significant component of freshwater wetland ecosystem. Presence or absence of birds may indicate the ecological conditions of the wetland area. The objectives of this study were to determine bird species abundance and their relationship with microclimate and habitat variables. Distance sampling point count method was applied for determining species abundance and multiple regressions was used for finding relationship between bird species abundance, microclimate and habitat variables. Bird species were monitored during November, 2007 to January, 2009. A total of 8728 individual birds comprising 89 species and 38 families were detected. Marsh Swamp was swarmed by 84 species (69.8%) followed open water body by 55 species (17.7%) and lotus swamp by 57 species (12.6%). Purple swamphen Porphyrio porphyrio (9.1% of all detections) was the most abundant bird species of marsh swamp, lesser whistling duck—Dendrocygna javanica (2.3%) was dominant species of open water body and pink-necked green pigeon—Treron vernans (1.7%) was most common species of lotus swamp. -

MALAYSIA: The ASIA Introtour A Tropical Birding Set Departure June 23-30, 2018 Guide: Ken Behrens All photos by Ken Behrens TOUR SUMMARY Any birder who has browsed through a southeast Asian bird book realizes that a huge set of lowland forest birds is found in the southern part of the peninsula, from southern Myanmar and Thailand south. Peninsular Malaysia is at the heart of this Sundaland biome, sharing a rich lowland avifauna with Sumatra, Java, and Borneo. Peninsular Malaysia also has tall mountains with a very different mix of birds – pseudo-Himalayan species, local endemics, and species shared with the mountains of the Greater Sunda islands. This tour is built around these two biomes. It is short and affordable, and provides a great introduction both to Asian birding in general, and more specifically to birding in the southern part of southeast Asia. One of the great things about this trip is its simplicity; three nights are spent at two locations: Fraser’s Hill (montane forest) and Taman Negara (lowland forest). The mangrove site of Kuala Selangor is also visited on the way to Fraser’s Hill, adding a nice suite of mangrove and scrubby forest species to the trip tally. Malaysia has excellent infrastructure, including great roads and luxurious lodging. The people are friendly and hospitable, and the excellent food is enriched by a mix of Chinese, Indian, and Malay influences. For those who want a longer sojourn in Sundaland, this short tour can be combined with the longer Tropical Birding Borneo tour that immediately follows it. Other mouthwatering species seen were Rhinoceros, Wreathed, Wrinkled and Black Hornbills, White- fronted and Black-thighed Falconets, Black-and-red, Black-and-yellow, Long-tailed, Dusky, Green and Banded Broadbills, the stunning Oriental Dwarf, Blue-eared, Blue-banded and Stork-billed Kingfishers, Red-headed, Diard’s, Red-naped and Scarlet-rumped Trogons, Great-billed Heron, Painted and Storm’s Storks, Lesser Adjutant, Wallace’s, Rufous-bellied and Blyth’s Hawk-Eagles, Crested Fireback, Buffy Fish and Brown Wood Owls, the highly sought-after Bornean Bristlehead and Blue Nuthatch, the endangered Straw-headed Bulbul, a whopping eight sightings of Orangutan and several troops of Proboscis Monkey, Malaysian Tapir and Western Tarsier.
