Utilising a family-run hotel on the outskirts of the ancient city of Arles as our base, the itinerary provided an easy opportunity to look for flamingoes, herons and wading birds using the shallow waters and reed-fringed lagoons as a breeding area or a suitable stop-over for migrants. The mountainous areas attract different and more localized species and we located special birds such as Wallcreeper, Rock Sparrow and Booted Eagle, together with a selection of other stunning species that call the Camargue home. Day 1 Monday 19th November Arriving in the early evening, leaders Neil and Matt met 15 of the 16 clients at Marseille airport, before collecting the minibuses and beginning the journey to the hotel. French protests and road blocks meant the route was more cross country but after just over an hour or so we arrived at our destination, Hotel des Granges. We were greeted by Bruno and Marie-Jo, our wonderful hosts and owners of this classically French Hotel, and a lone Black Redstart, the first bird for our trip, sat roosting over the entrance porch. -
Hungary & Transylvania
Although we had many exciting birds, the ‘Bird of the trip’ was Wallcreeper in 2015. (János Oláh) HUNGARY & TRANSYLVANIA 14 – 23 MAY 2015 LEADER: JÁNOS OLÁH Central and Eastern Europe has a great variety of bird species including lots of special ones but at the same time also offers a fantastic variety of different habitats and scenery as well as the long and exciting history of the area. Birdquest has operated tours to Hungary since 1991, being one of the few pioneers to enter the eastern block. The tour itinerary has been changed a few times but nowadays the combination of Hungary and Transylvania seems to be a settled and well established one and offers an amazing list of European birds. This tour is a very good introduction to birders visiting Europe for the first time but also offers some difficult-to-see birds for those who birded the continent before. We had several tour highlights on this recent tour but certainly the displaying Great Bustards, a majestic pair of Eastern Imperial Eagle, the mighty Saker, the handsome Red-footed Falcon, a hunting Peregrine, the shy Capercaillie, the elusive Little Crake and Corncrake, the enigmatic Ural Owl, the declining White-backed Woodpecker, the skulking River and Barred Warblers, a rare Sombre Tit, which was a write-in, the fluty Red-breasted and Collared Flycatchers and the stunning Wallcreeper will be long remembered. We recorded a total of 214 species on this short tour, which is a respectable tally for Europe. Amongst these we had 18 species of raptors, 6 species of owls, 9 species of woodpeckers and 15 species of warblers seen! Our mammal highlight was undoubtedly the superb views of Carpathian Brown Bears of which we saw ten on a single afternoon! 1 BirdQuest Tour Report: Hungary & Transylvania 2015 www.birdquest-tours.com We also had a nice overview of the different habitats of a Carpathian transect from the Great Hungarian Plain through the deciduous woodlands of the Carpathian foothills to the higher conifer-covered mountains. -

ORIOLE BIRDING TOUR REPORT PYRENEES & STEPPES 28TH FEBRUARY – 4TH MARCH 2016 www.oriolebirding.com [email protected] SUNDAY 28TH FEBRUARY – Sunny spells and 11C in Barcelona, -2.5C in mountains Our long first day started at 0530 in Gatwick Airport North Terminal for the 0730 flight to Barcelona which departed bang on time, arriving just over 90 minutes later to sunshine and pleasant temperatures. We met with our local guide Carles and quickly collected our minibus, before proceeding straight to the Llobregat Delta on the outskirts of the airport where it is possible to kick start the trip list with a good variety of wetland species. The most noteworthy sighting as we made our way along the main canal towards the reserve entrance, were the large numbers of Crag Martins feeding over the water and adjacent reeds – there were probably hundreds on the area, mixed with a few Barn Swallows, Sand Martins and House Martins, and we enjoyed some superb views. Common Chiffchaff, Blackcap, Common Stonechat and European Serin were seen along the 1km walk towards the hides, and a drake Red Crested Pochard was roosting at the reed edge with Northern Shovelers. At the main hide, a spread of ducks included many Common Teal and Common Pochard, Gadwall and a couple of waders – Common Snipe and a Little-ringed Plover. Carles spotted a Little Bittern, the first of the spring, skulking at the reed edge and another or the same flew low past the hide. Our main target was Moustached Warbler, and we spent some time checking a favoured spot, but we didn’t even hear one – time was not really on our side and we reluctantly had to move on. -

Other mouthwatering species seen were Rhinoceros, Wreathed, Wrinkled and Black Hornbills, White- fronted and Black-thighed Falconets, Black-and-red, Black-and-yellow, Long-tailed, Dusky, Green and Banded Broadbills, the stunning Oriental Dwarf, Blue-eared, Blue-banded and Stork-billed Kingfishers, Red-headed, Diard’s, Red-naped and Scarlet-rumped Trogons, Great-billed Heron, Painted and Storm’s Storks, Lesser Adjutant, Wallace’s, Rufous-bellied and Blyth’s Hawk-Eagles, Crested Fireback, Buffy Fish and Brown Wood Owls, the highly sought-after Bornean Bristlehead and Blue Nuthatch, the endangered Straw-headed Bulbul, a whopping eight sightings of Orangutan and several troops of Proboscis Monkey, Malaysian Tapir and Western Tarsier. -

We extracted and purified DNA from fresh muscle tissue, liver tissue, or toepad clips from 113 vouchered museum specimens (Supplementary File S1) using the Qiagen DNeasy Blood and Tissue Kit following the manufacturer’s protocol. We quantified DNA extracts using a Qubit fluorometer, and we prepared aliquots of DNA extracted from muscle and liver at 10 ng/µL in 60 µL volume for shearing. We sheared each DNA sample to 400–600 bp using a Qsonica Q800R sonicator for 15–45 cycles, with each cycle running for 20 seconds on and 20 seconds off at 25% amplitude. -

Mountain Peacock-Pheasant (Craig Robson) THE MALAY PENINSULA 18 – 28 JULY / 1 AUGUST 2019 LEADER: CRAIG ROBSON The 2019 tour to Peninsular Malaysia produced another superb collection of Sundaic regional specialities and Birdquest diamond birds. Highlights amongst the 277 species recorded this year included: Malaysian and Ferruginous Partridges, ‘Malay’ Crested Fireback, Mountain Peacock-Pheasant, Chestnut-bellied Malkoha, Moustached Hawk-Cuckoo, Reddish Scops Owl, Barred Eagle-Owl, Blyth’s and Gould’s Frogmouths, Malaysian Eared Nightjar, Rufous-collared and Blue-banded Kingfishers, Wrinkled Hornbill, Fire-tufted and Red-crowned Barbets, 19 species of woodpecker (17 seen), all the broadbills, Garnet and Mangrove Pittas, Fiery Minivet, Black-and-crimson Oriole, Spotted Fantail, Rail-babbler, Straw-headed and Scaly-bellied Bulbuls, Rufous-bellied Swallow, Large and Marbled Wren-Babblers, Black, Chestnut-capped and Malayan Laughingthrushes, Mountain Fulvetta, Blue Nuthatch, Malaysian Blue Flycatcher, Malayan Whistling Thrush, and Red-throated, Copper-throated and Temminck’s Sunbirds. 1 BirdQuest Tour Report: The Malay Peninsula www.birdquest-tours.com Interesting mammals included Siamang, Smooth-coated Otter, Lesser Oriental Chevrotain, and a colony of Lesser Sheath-tailed Bats, and we also noted a wide range of reptiles and butterflies, including the famous Rajah Brooke’s Birdwing. After meeting up and then departing from Kuala Lumpur airport, it was only a fairly short drive to our first birding location at Kuala Selangor. Exploring the site either side of lunch at our nearby hotel, and also on the following morning, we birded a network of trails through the recovering mangrove ecosystem. Here we notched-up the usually scarce and retiring Chestnut-bellied Malkoha, Swinhoe’s White-eye (split from Oriental/Japanese), and some smart Mangrove Blue Flycatchers, as well as Changeable Hawk-Eagle, lots of Pink-necked Green Pigeons and Olive-winged Bulbuls, Mangrove Whistler, Golden-bellied Gerygone, Cinereous Tit, and Ashy Tailorbird.
