Punch cartoon ood still dominated the news this month. At the shipping. Now the food shortage was being felt. At beginning of the War, 60% of food had been Kingston, a quarter-mile queue for potatoes was re- Fimported, and Imperial Germany realised the ported. A proclamation by King George V was read possibility of starving Britain into submission. U- out in churches on four successive Sundays. The committee of the Cranleigh Horticultural Soci- ety decided that the usual flower show would not be held this summer: instead, there would be an exhibition of vegetables in September. Grow food, not flowers, was the message.

A public meeting organised by the Parish Council was held at the Cinema Hall on Thursday May 24th to consider ‘Food Economy’. Sir George Bonham of Knowle declared that there had ‘never been such a crisis in our history’ and Sir Charles Chadwyck- Healey of Wyphurst exhorted people to ‘make a determined stand against waste at home’. It was urged that people should sign a pledge to use all possible food economy, and to put it in their window.

More practically, the managers of the village school experimented with giving schoolchildren a midday meal. For a cost of 2d, 351 children were given ‘bar- ley stew, with flaked maize pudding afterwards’. In case you wondered, ‘they very much enjoyed it’. Right: A photo by W.H. FEATURE ARTICLE People Profile Who‘s who? L to R, John and Graham Robertson From a tiny seed . . .

‘With the right light and some simple equipment, it’s easy to grow from seed and propagate even more from the parent stock. Armed with enthusiasm and a bright idea, Robert Alexander Robertson started business in Bramley and made it bloom. The Robertsons Entrepreneurs the business down to his three sons, Graham, Gerald, and John. John is currently in charge of the electricals as a fully qualified electrician. His expertise ranges from changing a simple light bulb to rewiring a whole house. Gerald has since left, and Graham, the youngest, is a fully qualified Miele engineer with an impressive 35 years’ experience under his belt. The two brothers run the family business, along with the help of an expert and loyal workforce.

In 2010, George Robertson joined the family busi- ness and is the fourth generation the store has seen.

It all started when Robert Alexander Robertson, Graham and John’s grandfather came down from Scotland, where he was working for a Scottish obert Alexander Robertson didn’t know what electrical engineering firm that erected a windmill he was starting when he travelled from Glas- in the grounds of a large house in Station Road in Rgow to Bramley over 91 years ago. By the time Leonard Robertson succeeded the family business, a much bigger market for electrical products had grown, so new premises were built to keep up with demand. These premises are the same that stand there to this day. Leonard passed plant the seeds . . . 10 www.cranleighmagazine.co.uk CRANLEIGH MAGAZINE with his family. However, as soon as Robert saw his son, Leonard, come home with a prefect’s badge, he pulled him out of school and into work as an electrician, wiring houses.

Robert and his wife ran the grocery side of things with Leonard’s brother in law, whilst Leonard ran the electrical side of the business. At the back of the greengrocers there was also a small fishmon- gers for which John remembers going to collect the fish off the train when the Horsham to Guildford railway line was in use.

Robert could see that the electrical industry was expanding with the invention of refrigeration and TV, so when three cottages nearby became vacant in turn, he bought them up with the intention to knock them down and build a shop devoted to the electrical side of the business. The Robertson’s lived in a flat above, and rented a back one out as another source of income, with one of the cottages reserved for the chief TV engineer so he could be close to the shop. They recall that the first colour TV they sold was to the dairy on the corner, whilst John remembers his grandfather buying 50 Elec- trolux fridges in the 60’s because they were in short supply, selling them in no time. Robert Alexander Robertson’s reference letter Robert’s grandchildren loved the shop from the start, racing back every day after school to help out. John remembers they used a lot of paraffin for heating and they’d leave the cans for the end of the day because they knew he liked filling them for customers. John studied for an apprenticeship and qualified as an electrician, working in the field for five years, before coming back to his father to work in the shop. Gerald loved electronics as a kid, and he was always playing with children’s electrical sets, however he was more interested in the theory,

A tribute to Robert Alexander Robertson In 1926, the main power cable came to Bramley and Robert saw an opportunity to start a busi- ness charging accumulators, getting involved in an assisted wiring scheme in which people had their houses rewired for these power cables. He went out and got himself qualified to rewire houses and set up a small shop opposite the bed centre in Bramley. As the years progressed and he got married, Robert acquired what is now NISA and converted it into a grocery, green grocery, and elec- trical shop, moving into the accommodation above ‘he pulled him out of school and into work’ Left to right, Gerald, Rose and Graham at Cranleigh Show, 1970’s plant the seeds . .continued . on page 12 www.cranleighmagazine.co.uk 11 CRANLEIGH MAGAZINE continued from page 11 whereas Graham and John were more practically minded and wanted to get their hands dirty.

TV was a large part of the shop, with three TV engineers employed at one point. There was also a full time domestic engineer in the repair workshop, who worked with toasters, kettles, and irons, repair- ing dozens of electrical appliances a week for local customers. In the 60’s, Miele came to a trade show that Graham attended, and he decided to take on the agency and become one of the first Miele agents in the south of . The team have been going for years for courses on the products. This means that, aside from phoning Miele up themselves, Robertson’s now provide the only service engineers in Surrey trained specifically for the brand.

The service has always been an important as- pect of the shop. If they can’t repair an item, then they’re able to install and fit a new one, along with providing advice and ongoing help for the customer should they run into any problems.

John says: “We find our customers come to us for the service, they want the product fitted, connected, and demonstrated, and many of them would be happy to pay more for that human element that the internet sites don’t provide.” ‘we’re not just an electrical shop’

Robertson’s has been in Bramley for 91 years, and has become an active member of the community along the way. John says: “people love to come in for a chat. We get people phoning up for all sorts of things such as “Sorry to bother you but I can’t seem to find the phone number for the little shop across the road’.

We like to think we’re not just an electrical shop, but a part of people’s everyday lives too.

he last few weeks have, as usual, been one of the most exciting times in the birding calen- Tdar. Summer migrants started arriving from the south as early as March.

Sand Martins, Swallows, House Martins - to name but a few - had all made it around here by the end of that month, flying north over Cranleigh and sur- rounding villages and filling the gaps vacated by wintering visitors such as Redwings, Fieldfares and Meadow Pipits.

But first back, as usual, was a Chiffchaff. I had my first sighting of the year in Cranleigh on 13 March when there were three singing and fly-catching from trees along the .

Within days these chirpy chappies were abundant along the woodland edges. They could be eas- ily seen before the trees came into bud, flicking through the branches above carpets of snow-white wood anemones and blazing yellow lesser celan- dines. If there is a spring that launches Spring, for me it’s the ‘Chiff’.

Earlier still though was another species, some of which have completely changed their migration strategy. The Blackcap. This little silvery-grey war- bler is the one you can frequently easily hear in the area but far less often see. Eurasian Blackcap, male (Sylvia atricapilla)

Strange things are happening in the Blackcap world. One was in my garden on 20 January and unlike in the summer it had no hesitation showing itself. I am sure other people in and around the village probably spotted one visiting their bird table too.

Mine was a female and it was around for a number of weeks, picking up crumbs and seeds and pecking at halved apples I’d stuck in my apple tree in the vain hope of attracting a flock of Waxwings.

Around 20 years ago the first Blackcaps I’d see passing through Cranleigh on their way from North Africa and the Mediterranean would be true sum- mer visitors. This was usually early April. They often stopped off around the garden for a few days and then moved on to the thickets and woodlands.

But in recent years, and perhaps aided by warmer winters and the increasing tendency of bird well- wishers to create feeding stations in their gardens, they have cottoned on to what we humans also know. Why spend all the effort travelling many hun- dreds of miles for a decent meal when you can pick a good one up much more cheaply locally.

So winter sightings have been increasing. And that has led to some interesting questions that bird re- searchers are trying to find answers to. Guess where most of the birds who spend winter in Britain mostly come from. Germany and central Europe – accord- ing to ringing recoveries. So these are not necessar- ily the ones we saw earlier in the year.

These Blackcaps have apparently completely changed their migration strategy. They are not head- ing for Morocco after breeding, they are coming to us. And this population, it is believed, may even be different from the other Blackcaps breeding in Ger- many.

Cranleigh is Blooming ranleigh in Bloom is a voluntary communi- ty organisation with the goal of promoting Ccivic pride, encouraging people to get in- volved in their community and bringing together various groups of people.

The group is chaired by Martin Bamford and consists of a committee of volunteers who meet monthly to plan activities. Other local people volunteer to help with different projects and the initiative is supported by various local businesses and organisations.

Cranleigh in Bloom submitted an entry to the South & South East in Bloom Awards last year, and was de- lighted to surpass our first entry from 2014 by win- ning the highest standard, Gold. Cranleigh was also named as overall category winner, receiving The Town Award 2016, with the judges highlighting the high levels of community involvement. Everyone in- volved with Cranleigh in Bloom is very proud of this achievement, which really puts Cranleigh on the map and is a fantastic reflection of the hard work put in by everyone involved in Cranleigh in Bloom.

The initiative continues in 2017 and summer planting will arrive in late May, bringing the High Street to life. We have already received a record number of hang- ing basket and floral display orders from local retail- ers, and generous sponsorship means we can supply planting for communal areas and charity shops. of the initiative. Blooming Books

by Raymond Briggs

rom his first published illustration in 1958 through to the pieces that he continues to produce today, FBlooming Books is a stunning and varied exploration of the work of this brilliant and talented artist.

Commentary from the journalist Nicolette Jones accom- panies extracts and complete picture books, with details on the background to Brigg’s work and the underlying themes. Following an intro from Jones and a foreword from Briggs, the book is laid out in four main parts: The Early Years (including The Elephant and the Bad Baby), The Nursery Classics (The Snowman, The Bear, Father Christmas), A Gallery of Characters (Fungus, Ug, The Man), and Social Issues (Where the Wind Blows, The Old Iron Woman, Ethel & Ernest).

You’ll find all of Brigg’s work here, from his captivating illustrations for children, to his sharp witted satirical works for adults. Familiar favourites are pictured alongside previously unseen pieces, including prep drawings for published titles and original work for planned sequels to the beloved Fungus the Bogeyman.
