Index- 1 FM 6-1 1 PREFACE Pershing I1 is a terminally guided theater fire support missile system that can accurately deliver tactical nuclear warheads. It has the longest range and the greatest payload of any US Army weapon system. The system is ground mobile, air transportable, and can be employed worldwide. This publication describes doctrine, techniques, considerations, and planning factors to maintain combat readiness and sustain combat operations within the Pershing 11 firing battery. Guidance is provided on the duties of key personnel and the training of sections, platoons, and the battery as a whole. All users of this publication are encouraged to recommend changes and improvements. Comments should be keyed to the specific page, paragraph, and line of the text in which the change is recommended. Rationale should be provided in support of comments to ensure complete understanding and evaluation. When used in this publication, "he," "him," "his," and 66men9'represent both the masculine and feminine genders unless otherwise state CHAPTER 1 SYSTEM DESCRIPTION Pershing I1 (PII) is a ground-mobile, surface-to-surface, nuclear weapon system. It is a solid-propellant missile with ground support equipment (GSE) mounted on wheeled vehicles. The missile may be launched quickly and is an effective weapon against a broad spectrum of targets. It consists of a rocket motor with attached forward and aft skirts. The forward skirt allows the second stage to be mated to the first stage. In a single-stage configuration, the reentry vehicle is mated directly to the forward skirt. The forward skirt contains three thrust termination ports. These ports stop the forward thrust at the time determined by the guidance and control section of the reentry vehicle when the missile is fired in the single-stage configuration. The first stage contains a motor ignition safe/arm mechanism designed to prevent the accidental

Only about a tenth of the range’s missile and space flights can be attributed to Army programs, versus more than a third sponsored by each of the other services. Nevertheless, numbers seldom tell the whole story, and we would be guilty of a grave disservice if we overlooked the Army’s impressive achievements in the development of rocket- powered vehicles, missile guidance systems, and reentry vehicle technologies from the late 1940s onward. Several years of experimental flights were conducted at the White Sands Proving Ground before the Army sponsored the first two ballistic missile launches from Cape Canaveral, Florida, in July 1950. In June 1950, the Army moved some of its most important guided missile projects from Fort Bliss, Texas, to Redstone Arsenal near Huntsville, Alabama. Work began in earnest on the REDSTONE ballistic missile program shortly thereafter. In many ways, the early Army missile programs set the tone for the development of other ballistic missiles and range instrumentation by other military branches in the 1950s. PERSHING missile launches continued at the Cape in the 1960s, and they were followed by PERSHING 1A and PERSHING II launches in the 1970s and 1980s. This study begins with a summary of the major events leading up to the REDSTONE missile program at Cape Canaveral.

I am treating your correspondence as a request for information under the Freedom of Information Act 2000. I can confirm that some information within the scope of your request is held. We do hold recorded information on the number and nature of incidents when RAF Quick Reaction Alert (QRA) aircraft launched against aircraft approaching the UK in the last five years. However, similar information for the aircraft approaching the Falkland Islands is only held centrally for 2017-19 inclusive. Section 26(1)a of the FOI Act provides that we should withhold information which would be likely to prejudice the defence of the British Isles or any Colony. Section 26(1) b of the Act provides that we should withhold information which would be likely to prejudice the capability, effectiveness or security of relevant forces. Section 24(1) of the FOI provides that we should withhold information for the purposes of safeguarding national security. Nicklas © Smithsonian Institution, 2003 NASM Archives Desind Collection 1997-0014 Herbert Stephen Desind Collection 109 Cubic Feet, 305 Boxes Biographical Note Herbert Stephen Desind was a Washington, DC area native born on January 15, 1945, raised in Silver Spring, Maryland and educated at the University of Maryland. He obtained his BA degree in Communications at Maryland in 1967, and began working in the local public schools as a science teacher. At the time of his death, in October 1992, he was a high school teacher and a freelance writer/lecturer on spaceflight. Desind also was an avid model rocketeer, specializing in using the Estes Cineroc, a model rocket with an 8mm movie camera mounted in the nose. To many members of the National Association of Rocketry (NAR), he was known as “Mr. Cineroc.” His extensive requests worldwide for information and photographs of rocketry programs even led to a visit from FBI agents who asked him about the nature of his activities. Mr. Desind used the collection to support his writings in NAR publications, and his building scale model rockets for NAR competitions. Desind also used the material in the classroom, and in promoting model rocket clubs to foster an interest in spaceflight among his students. Desind entered the NASA Teacher in Space program in 1985, but it is not clear how far along his submission rose in the selection process. He was not a semi-finalist, although he had a strong application.
