SONGS THAT CHANGED the WORLD FEAT. VREID Music Can Change the World! Some Songs Have Done More Than Just Entertain – They Have Changed the World SONGS THAT CHANGED THE WORLD FEAT. VREID Music can change the world! Some songs have done more than just entertain – they have changed the world. Together with Nobel Peace Center we invite you to their ongoing series about songs that have changed the world. So far artists like Bendik, Myra, Amanda Delara og Honningbarna have contributed with their interpretation of important songs that have changed the world. Now the Nobel Peace Center goes metal when Vreid will find a song about freedom of expression and do their interpretation of it. Asbjørn Slettemark, famous Norwegian music journalist and TV personality, will moderate the following debate about the chosen song. The gig will also include several of Vreid's own songs. NOBEL PEACE CENTER TUESDAY 7. APRIL 18:00 NOK 150,- (Including ticket fee) VREID The Norwegian metal brigade rose from the ashes of black metal band Windir, after the tragic perishing of the “Sognametal” legends with the declared mission of exploring new musical paths. The band has now released eight great albums and is known for their amazing live shows. Vreid's newest masterpiece is “Lifehunger” which was released in 2018. https://www.facebook.com/vreidofficial Toril Rokseth from Nobel Peace Center: Nobel Peace Center wants to contribute to visitors of Oslo that attends cultural events also can experience some of the other things that the city has to offer. Through the cooperation with Inferno Metal Festival we offer a new arena for this kind of music – and at the same time we express that music can be more than just entertainment – music can change the world. Asbjørn Slettemark: All the way since the very beginning of “Songs That Changed the World”, the project has offered surprises, fun, new knowledge and some amazing, strong and catchy cover songs. To do this together with Inferno Metal Festival, a festival I have been thrilled about for many years, feels just right. That it will also include Vreid, a band I have been following as a fan and a journalist through the last 15 years, makes it especially fun and interesting. I am very exited for the song they will choose, perform and talk about. Jarle Hváll Kvåle from Vreid: In Vreid we have always been up for new challenges. It was therefor with huge excitement we took on this task when Inferno Metal Festival and Nobel Peace Center challenges us to do our interpretation of a song that changed the world. Freedom of speech has been relevant since the very beginning of rock, and is just as relevant and important today. A lot has changed since rock 'n' roll was new and rebellious in the 60s, but still today the freedom of speech are controversial and debated. So maybe the world has been in a stand still the last 60 years. We thanks for the engagement. Vreid looks forward to dig deep into the rock history for many fantastic songs, and will be ready to perform our song at the Nobel Peace Center in April. • Windir Album Download Windir
windir album download Windir. Windir, or in English "Primal Warrior", is a now defunct black metal/viking metal band from Sogndal, Norway. Their style of music emphasised their roots, lyrically depicting historical events and the musical inclusion of old folk tunes and even the accordion. Valfar himself called the music he made "Sognametal". Most of their lyrics were based on old stories and local history from Sogndal, going back to the viking-age. Many of Windir's lyrics are written in the archaic local dialect Sognam?l. Windir released four albums Sóknardalr, Arntor, 1184 and Likferd in their ten year career. The two first albums were entirely created by Terje "Valfar" Bakken, the founder of Windir, whereas the next two were written together with his childhood friend Hv?ll. Windir started as a one-man-band in 1994, and on the first album, Sóknardalr, Valfar plays everything except the drums himself. On Arntor Valfar decided to include more session members, but the screaming vocals, rhythm guitars, bass, synthesisers and accordion were still handled by Valfar. The third album, 1184, was written together with his friends in another Sogndal-based band, Ulcus. After this Ulcus merged with Windir, and from then on Windir presented itself as a full band. 1184 slightly changed the sound of Windir and included more electronic elements in the music. This provoked divided reactions from the fans. Likferd continued the musical style from 1184. On both 1184 and Likferd some of the lyrics are written in English. This was done in order to reach a larger audience, but also to give the music a wider spectre, and create other atmospheres.

  • Vikings, Norse Mythology, and Medievalism in Nordic Extreme Metal Music
“A great heathen fist from the North” Vikings, Norse Mythology, and Medievalism in Nordic Extreme Metal Music. Ashley Walsh Master’s Thesis for Nordic Viking and Medieval Culture- ILN UNIVERSITETET I OSLO Autumn 2013 2 © Ashley Walsh 2013 «A great heathen fist from the North»: Vikings, Norse Mythology, and Medievalism in Nordic Extreme Metal Ashley Walsh http://www.duo.uio.no/ Trykk: Reprosentralen, Universitetet i Oslo 3 Summary Viking metal is a dynamic and popular subgenre of metal music of burgeoning popularity coming primarily from Nordic countries. These musicians use their nations’ Viking histories and saga material as inspiration for their lyrics and nostalgic reimaginings of the past are used to make commentaries on modern society and hopes for the future. Viking metal bands use the Middle Ages and the Viking Age as a screen upon which to play with nostalgic imaginings of what life was like then or at least how it should have been based upon aspects of the collective memory of their communities which can include the works of historians and that of artists and political figures. They use this as a means of criticizing the modern Christian world they perceive as being weaker than the ancient one. The three main components of Viking metal are: • The idealization of a national past from which an ethnic identity can be constructed on a national, Scandinavian, or pan-Nordic level. • A staunch opposition to Christianity that is based on the perceived oppression of their ancestors in the Viking Age for which they lust for vengeance. This vengeance is described as taking place in a grand Ragnarok-inspired battle between the pagan forces and the Christian.

The examination will be conducted in English. Faculty examiner: Benjamin Martin (Institutionen för idé- och lärdomshistoria). Abstract Thompson, C. 2018. Norges Våpen. Cultural Memory and Uses of History in Norwegian Black Metal. Studia Historica Upsaliensia 263. 221 pp. Uppsala: Acta Universitatis Upsaliensis. ISBN 978-91-513-0505-9. This dissertation examines uses of history and expressions of cultural memory in Norwegian black metal. Formed in the late 1980s and early 1990s, Norwegian black metal seemed at odds with many of the stereotypes of Norway. The genre is an extreme style of heavy metal music that has been associated with burning churches, desecrating graves, and committing murders. Yet, Norway is often perceived as wealthy with sublime natural beauty and high levels of equality. Since the late 1990s, Norwegian black metal has increasingly received positive recognition and support from Norwegian government agencies and cultural institutions who have deemed this style of music a cultural product of Norway. In exploring the relationship between Norwegian black metal and Norway, two primary questions are asked: what makes Norwegian black metal ‘Norwegian’ and what are its influences? To answer these questions, a theoretical approach based on Astrid Erll’s cultural memory complex is used.
