SIMBOL ŞI TEHNICĂ ARHAICĂ-RAPEL ÎN CREAłIA CONTEMPORANĂ BITAY ECATERINA 1 SUMMARY The Shibori, Batik and Ikat techniques are known as resist dyeing techniques. „Shibori” is actually an old name of the Tie-dye technique, a widespread expression in the hippie communities of the 60’s – 70’s period, when this technique had a great success also among the fashion designers, making a spectacular comeback, after a long period of sporadic isolation in certain areas of the world, especially in Japan, Africa and South America. The first textiles found by archaeologists are so old that we may say that world history could be read in the nations’ textiles. The rise of the civilizations and the fall of the empires are woven and printed on the scarves and the shrouds of the great conquests main characters. Archaeological diggings revealed signs of these traditions of 5000 years old. Religion, traditions, myths, superstitions and rituals are closely related to the textiles belonging to many nations of Eastern Asia, Asia Minor, and of the Pacific Islands, their aesthetic value being, more than once, secondary. CHAPTER 1 THE SHIBORI TECHNIQUE The origin of the word “Shibori” is the verb “shiboru” which means to wring, to twist, to press. Even if “shibori” refers to a particular group of resist dyeings, the word’s origin suggests the cloth manipulation process and it can comprise modern methods of dyeing which involve the same type of cloth treatment, possibly without pigments or treatment with pigments applied by using totally different methods than the ancient ones. Shibori can be divided in many ways: according to the areas where it is used, such as Japan, China, India, Africa, Indonesia, South America or according to the details usesd in the technique. -

FKIP UHAMKA [email protected] [email protected] Abstract. Indonesia's ethnic diversity has become a world-recognized identity. There are more than 750 ethnic groups throughout Indonesia from Sabang to Merauke. Every ethnic group has its character and is also an image of a proud cultural system. The Lio ethnic group is one of the ethnic groups on the island of Flores with their traditional ties and values of local wisdom that enrich Indonesia's diversity. One of its values include the local leadership known as Mosalaki. In Sikka Regency, the status of a Mosalaki in the Lio ethnic group is still the central point of the social structure. The Mosalaki are prominent figures in terms of their origins, authority and charisma that are not shared by society in general. In various traditional ceremonial procedures, the Mosalaki have an essential role to play, such as deciding the planting season, land management procedures, marriage procedures, and procedures for preserving and ensuring the wellbeing of people, contact behaviour, the belief system embraced even in the realm of modern politics today. This research was conducted using a qualitative approach as developed by Spradley. The results of the study describe that the role of a Mosalaki is still the focal point of all activities in the Lio ethnic, especially in the modern world today. -

Flores Curatorial Circulations in Southeast Asia n Bangkok during the nineteenth century, the Thai king of the Chakri dynasty, Chulalongkorn, reserved a place in the royal palace for a museum he called phrabas phiphitaphan, or “a tour of various I 1 materials.” In the early part of the twentieth century, the American anthropologist, census-taker, and museum maker Dean Worcester went around the islands of the Philippines to document ethnicity. These forays share something with the toils of British explorer Sir Stamford Raffles, who, as recounted by an attentive observer, hoarded his people and things: “He kept four persons on wages, each in his peculiar department; one to go to the forests in search of various kinds of flowers, fungi, pulp, and such like products. Another he sent to collect all kinds of flies, grasshoppers, centipedes, bees, scorpions.”2 The intersection between the amassing of objects and people through the devices of the wunderkammer (a collection of objects without defined categories) and anthropometry (the study of human physical measurement in anthropology), well known in the discourse of reconnaissance, leads us to ponder the scale of the colonial in relation to the scale of the modern, the monument of empire and the miniature of periphery. Over time, this act of rendering the world picturesque and therefore collectible may be coincidental with the act of representation of both the self and the state, as can be gleaned in the efforts of the Thai king, the American social scientist, and the British discoverer. -
Languages of Flores
Are the Central Flores languages really typologically unusual? Alexander Elias January 13, 2020 1 Abstract The isolating languages of Central Flores (Austronesian) are typologically distinct from their nearby relatives. They have no bound morphology, as well elaborate numeral clas- sifier systems, and quinary-decimal numeral system. McWhorter (2019) proposes that their isolating typology is due to imperfect adult language acquisition of a language of Sulawesi, brought to Flores by settlers from Sulawesi in the relatively recent past. I pro- pose an alternative interpretation, which better accounts for the other typological features found in Central Flores: the Central Flores languages are isolating because they have a strong substrate influence from a now-extinct isolating language belonging to the Mekong- Mamberamo linguistic area (Gil 2015). This explanation better accounts for the typological profile of Central Flores and is a more plausible contact scenario. Keywords: Central Flores languages, Eastern Indonesia, isolating languages, Mekong- Mamberamo linguistic area, substrate influence 2 Introduction The Central Flores languages (Austronesian; Central Malayo-Polynesian) are a group of serialising SVO languages with obligatory numeral classifier systems spoken on the island of Flores, one of the Lesser Sunda Islands in the east of Indonesia. These languages, which are almost completely lacking in bound morphology, include Lio, Ende, Nage, Keo, Ngadha and Rongga. Taken in their local context, this typological profile is unusual: other Austronesian languages of eastern Indonesia generally have some bound morphology and non-obligatory numeral classifier systems. However, in a broader view, the Central Flores languages are typologically similar to many of the isolating languages of Mainland Southeast Asia and Western New Guinea, many of which are also isolating, serialising SVO languages with obligatory numeral classifier systems. -

One of the customs held is matrilineal marriage with idealization occurring in the equivalent caste or social layers. This means whether the people of Bajawa still adhere to the marriage must meet the equivalent caste. The research method is literature study, with main source of literature on Bajawa society culture, news about marriage culture development and other relevant sources. The result of the research shows that the marriage custom of Bajawa people, although adhering to matrilineal, is cross-caste or cross social. Exogamy marriages are also becoming commonplace in modern Bajawa society. Keywords – Marriage; Bajawa; Social Stratification; Ngada. I. The process is inspired by the visual properties of traditional ikats. It follows the technical ikat procedure of primary resistant dyeing and sub- sequently weaving. Whithin the research a new way of weaving is explored in which the dyed thread dictates the weaving process and therefore influences the weaving motif. In addition different design variables such as material, binding pattern and finishing are used to push forward the devel- oped concept. The aim of this work is to explore new aesthetic expressions between regular and irregular motifs through the application of design thinking. The result presents an innovative approach in the ikat technique in order to create random distrib- uted patterns and how they can be already influ- enced in the stage of yarn preparation. Preparation for the competition required architectural design guidelines, which were an important part of the terms of reference for the project. This paper aims to provide an overview of the issues surrounding the work involved in the collaboration work between the Indonesian government and multi-disciplinary participants to establish museum design guidelines for this competition. By articulating and elaborating the characteristics of several famous museums design in the world, by defining relevant architectural theories, and by exploring an in-depth analysis of “batik”, which UNESCO designated as Intangible Heritage of Humanity of UNESCO in 2009, the architectural design guidelines were developed based onfindings revealedby inserting “batik” itself as the museum storyline into contemporary architecture. By referring to trans-disciplinary methods and concepts, then the process of batik making is potentially a kind of architectural “showing off” to expose the uniqueness of Indonesian batik as well as the Architecture-Event theory promoted by French philosopher Jacques Derrida.
