PROGRAMME REVIEW – Squires Gate FC (NWCL) 05/10/19 v Irlam (NWCLP) Wow! This has got to be one of the best football programmes we have ever reviewed at FGIF. Entitled Talk of the Gate the latest issue from North West Counties League-side Squires Gate FC (v Irlam) is simply outstanding not only in terms of its content but also in its terrific layout and presentation. Readers will be totally absorbed by the quality and variety of reading material on offer. It certainly goes the extra mile in providing so many well-researched articles and facts. As well as the usual matchday news and statistics (fixtures, results and tables) there’s plenty of in-depth coverage devoted to both teams in action (as shown on the front cover), the NWCL league and cup competitions in general as well as to the life of football clubs beyond. What sets this apart from other programmes (even at a higher-level) though is the extensive breadth and range of coverage which make it so appealing. Take a look at the superb action photos (taken by star snapper Albert Cooper), well thought out interviews and informative Groundhopper page. And yes, there’s also a themed quiz to keep you busy whilst enjoying your half-time cuppa. You will be impressed by the care and attention paid to the clear layout throughout its regular mouth-watering 40-full colour pages, all of which are tailored to meet the needs of the travelling football fan. The mix of adverts to content is well balanced too. Editors Dan and Jay should be very proud of their superb matchday magazine and deserve great praise for their undoubted knowledge and unstinting efforts. This truly outstanding publication is a welcome addition to any programme collection and one truly worthy of winning any Programme of The Year Award out there. This is one I can thoroughly recommend to all football supporters and paper-chasers alike. Judging by the rave reports already posted on twitter, I couldn’t agree more, it’s brilliant!! Talk of the Gate edited by Dan and Jay Hayden at Squires Gate FC, priced £2, contains 40-pages, is printed by Print IT, Blackpool. Stones were hoping to continue in the same vein as their mid-week performance against Burton Park Wanderers, but the plans were left in the changing room. From the off it was the visitors pushing forward, Stones’ defence held firm and Dalton certainly proved himself in goal. When Stones did break out of their half the impetus and finish was lacking and the visitors re-applied the pressure on the home defence. A 3-minute flurry on the half-hour saw Stones’ defence undone when an ill judged back pass failed to find Dalton and instead went to the feet of a visiting striker, who made no mistake planting the ball in the net, then Stones conceded a free kick just outside their box, the ball was flighted in, missed by the defence and hammered in at the far post. After the break Stones emerged and tried to regain control of the tie, but the visitors shut up shop at the back and what chances Stones engineered were either soundly dealt with, wide or hit the bar.

The first trace of the Ironworks was recorded in 1891, the local press reported them beating Stamford Town Reserves 1-0. By the 1892-93 season the Ironworks were the best team around, dislodging the longer established Town, but in the summer of 1894 the clubs merged. The Great War was almost over by the time the next Blackstones Club emerged, joining the Peterborough League in 1918 winning the championship that season. However, the club’s success, indeed its life was short-lived withdrawing from league the following season. 1921 the club re-emerged under a new name Rutland Engineering Works. The Peterborough League of the twenties was formida- ble with the likes of Spalding, Bourne and Yaxley. The club opted for more local competitions, in 1929-30 they lined up in both the Stam- ford Amateur and Deepings Leagues.

Stones started well, and on 3 minutes Peasgood signalled intent when breaking through from midfield, he was upended on the edge of the home team’s 18-yard box. From the free kick, Bird struck hard and low and the ball cracked off the upright and out for a goal kick. Stones set up to maintain a solid defence and break when the opportunity arose. This strategy frus- trated Long Buckby and presented the Stones’ attack with several chances on goal, but unfor- tunately these chances went begging. The second half continued in the same fashion, Stones defending well, with Dalton making 2 fingertip saves to deny the home side who were resulting to long range shots. With 16 minutes remaining Long Buckby broke down the Stones’ left flank and centred the ball where it found a lone striker who shanked the ball into the net. Stones now pressed and pressed, Peasgood meeting a corner from Masnita in the dying embers of the game, to see his header flash wide, but the home side put up the shutters, defended well and held on for the 3 points.
