[email protected] www.hmabenefits.ca A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT OF THE WHITBY SPORTS HALL OF FAME A warm welcome to our friends who join us here this evening for the 21st Annual Induction Gala of the Whitby Sports Hall of Fame. We have assembled annually from the time our Hall was established to recognize individuals and teams for their accomplishments, successes, and contributions across a variety of sports disciplines on behalf of our community. As representatives and ambassadors of the Town of Whitby, from local playing fields and arenas to the international stage, our inductees have engendered a great deal of pride within our municipality for many years. This evening, we celebrate the induction of Jay Harrison, Peter MacKellar, and Bob McKenzie into our Hall. On behalf of our Board of Directors, it is indeed my pleasure to extend congratulations to our newest inductees on this significant accomplishment. Individual plaques commemorating their induction will be placed on permanent display in our Hall at the Iroquois Park Sports Complex, and memorabilia that these inductees have collected throughout their respective careers will also be prominently on exhibit for the next year. Our volunteer committee trusts that this evening will produce enduring memories for all in attendance, and we are most appreciative of your continued support of our endeavours. Kind Regards, Rocky Gualtieri President, Whitby Sports Hall of Fame April 28, 2018 It is a privilege to honour the 2018 inductees into the Whitby Sports Hall of Fame – Bob McKenzie, Peter MacKellar, and Jay Harrison. As the Member of Provincial Parliament for Whitby-Oshawa, and a long-time resident of Whitby, I am proud of the determination and accomplishments of our community’s athletes in their respective fields of sport. These achievements will become part of our local history and will be remembered by residents of Whitby today and for generations to come. Lorne Coe MPP, Whitby-Oshawa Bob McKenzie Media Bob is native of Scarborough, Ontario, and has been a resident of Whitby since 1991. He is predominantly known as being the Original Hockey Insider for The Sports Network (TSN). Bob graduated with a Bachelor of Journalism degree from Ryerson Polytechnical Institute in 1979. While he first appeared on TSN in 1987, McKenzie always had a full-time newspaper job from 1979 to 2000, including a sports reporter for The Sault Star in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, the Editor-in-Chief of The Hockey News for nine years, and a hockey columnist at the Toronto Star for six years. In 2000, Bob left the newspaper world to work as a full-time broadcaster, at TSN in Canada and with NBC in the United States. He is an award-winning journalist who was recognized by the Hockey Hall of Fame when he was presented with the Elmer Ferguson Memorial Award by the Professional Hockey Writers’ Association in 2015. He also has been presented with both a Gemini Award and a Canadian Screen Award for his studio work on TSN. Bob is a best-selling author of two books - Hockey Confidential: Inside Stories from Inside the Game, and Hockey Dad: True Confessions of a (Crazy?) Hockey Dad. The latter book chronicled McKenzie’s raising of two sons, Michael and Shawn, through the Canadian minor hockey system, specifically the Whitby Minor Hockey Association (WMHA), as well as minor lacrosse in Whitby. McKenzie was very involved as a volunteer coach and manager for both boys in hockey and lacrosse. In addition to his sports and family-related community efforts, Bob is involved in multiple charitable endeavours, including Special Olympics Canada, amongst others. He also sits on the selection committees for both the Hockey Hall of Fame and Hockey Canada’s Order of Hockey in Canada. Whether it is on Twitter, with almost 1.6 million followers, on TSN TV, TSN Radio or TSN.ca, or through his work in the United States for NBC Sports, Bob is an authoritative source for hockey news and information. In a media career spanning almost 40 years, Bob McKenzie has undoubtedly established himself as one of the most respected, trusted, and acclaimed voices in hockey. Bob and his wife of 38 years, Cindy, currently live in Brooklin, Ontario. Jay Harrison Athlete - Hockey Jay enjoyed his entire minor hockey experience playing in his hometown of Whitby, Ontario. After his graduation from the Whitby Minor Hockey Association (WMHA), heplayed one season for the Oshawa Legionnaires of the Ontario Junior Hockey League (OJHL), winning the BJ Monroe Trophy as the league’s Top Pro Prospect and the Jack Ferguson award, commonly known as the “Fergie”, as the player selected first overall in the 1998 Ontario Hockey League (OHL) Priority Selection. Jay was selected first overall in that draft by the Brampton Battalion, giving him the added distinction of being the first-ever pick in the history of the franchise. Harrison played his entire 4-year OHL career with the Battalion, and was selected to represent Canada at the IIHF World Junior Hockey Championships on two occasions. He was a medalist in each tournament, earning a bronze medal in 2001 and silver in 2002. Harrison was selected in the third round of the 2001 National Hockey League (NHL) Entry Draft, 82nd overall, by the Toronto Maple Leafs, and he made his NHL debut in 2006 against the Montreal Canadiens. In 2007, Jay signed a 1-year contract with EV Zug of the National League A in Switzerland. Honing his skills and gaining valuable experience overseas, Jay returned to North America in early 2008 to rejoin the Maple Leafs for the remainder of that season. In the summer of 2008, Jay signed with the Carolina Hurricanes of the NHL where he established himself as an everyday defenseman over six-plus seasons. The pinnacle of his career came in 2013, when he represented Canada at the IIHF World Hockey Championships in Stockholm, Sweden. In 2014, Jay was traded to the Winnipeg Jets where he played the final two years of his professional career. He played in 372 games over the course of his NHL career, registering 23 goals, 52 assists, and 360 penalty minutes. Peter MacKellar Athlete - Hockey Peter was born in Ottawa, Ontario in 1975. He was raised in Oakville, Ontario where he played amateur hockey in the Oakville Rangers system. MacKellar was selected in the eighth round, 127th overall, by the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds in the 1992 Ontario Hockey League (OHL) draft, and won the Memorial Cup in his first season with the Greyhounds. In his third season, Peter was traded to the Owen Sound Platers, becoming an assistant captain in his fourth and final season during which he recorded 40 goals and 79 points in 59 games before being sidelined with a broken jaw. Peter went on to play hockey at the University of New Brunswick, appearing in three Canadian University Finals in four years and winning one national championship. He then spent several years playing professionally in the United States with a number of teams throughout the mid-west and western regions. Upon his return to the Durham Region, MacKellar was invited to tryout camp with the newly-resurrected Whitby Dunlops. He was selected to the team and subsequently named team captain, a title he would retain for 13 consecutive seasons. Over the course of Peter’s career, the Dunlops won several titles including consecutive Ontario championships (Robertson Cup) from 2005-06 to 2007-08 and advanced to the Allan Cup final in each of those seasons. Included among Peter’s personal accomplishments is a 100-point season (51 goals) in 30 games during the 2005-06 campaign, along with many All- Star Team selections and his recognition by the Ontario Hockey Association (OHA) as Senior AAA Player of the Year in 2010-11. Over the course of his senior hockey career, Peter amassed 317 goals and 632 points in only 277 regular season games as well as 160 career playoff and Allan Cup points.
